Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

I know it is early in the season but this Reds team is looking good. Our starting pitching is looking well. Although we will have to see about Milton.
Our bullpen has been lights out. Conine came up big today.
I'm cautiously optimistic with this start, as I have been with the Reds for the past ... oh ... three years.

Two words: No. Depth.

The Reds are two or three injuries away from turning a May NL Central lead into a June road trip freefall. Again. Luckily, the NL Central looks abysmal this season, so that may help. The Cards and Astros both appear to have major issues.

I will say I was very harsh re: Hamilton when the Reds announced the acquisition, and I'm really, really happy to have been proven wrong so far. I want this kid to succeed; it's such a great story.

-Everything is coming up roses but Uncle Milty will be along to provide a reality check on Sunday it appears.

-So far the pitching looks great, but its only 4 games and its in ice cold weather. Lets see how we are looking come August.

-If Votto keeps progressing and the Hatte/Conine due can put up some numbers they could fetch a nice return at the trade deadline.

I disagree. I think we have more depth than ever. Norris, Keppinger and Votto all should be able to fill a roster spot if an OF, IF or 1b go down. We have 3 catchers already on the roster. And we have Livingston, da' Liz, Bray and da' Jew all ready to fill SP/RP spots very soon. Not to mention the flexibility Sarloose and Santo give up. There is also that Bailey kid nobody's ever heard of :wink2: .

I'll never root for the Reds failure, so I am hoping Milton will succeed, but if not I think we have 5th starter options every bit as good as any other MLB team.

And, as Jax said, we have some resources for trade bait if we need to acquire some more depth. Kriv has proved willing and able to find guys who just needed a change of scenery.

Overall I think our depth is as good as any in the NL Central. Now, will that translate into wins, we'll have to wait and see. But here is to hoping  !

Overall I like Kriv but that trade last year only showed me he's willing, not so much able. We can't take another fleecing like that.

The Hattnine duo even with good numbers would probably only fetch prospects. They would most likely go to contenders (assuming we aren't one of course) to provide depth and vetran leadership. Those deals almost never see another MLB player coming back, contenders can't create a new hole to fill an existing one. Krivs talent so far it seems has been finding undervalued prospects, lets hope if this scenario played out he could do some damage.

As to depth I agree in part. We have pitching depth better than ever. We are razor thin in position players. I have been saying all along anything happens to EE or Dunn and we are screwed. You could almost add Freel in there due to him being the only leadoff hitter in the entire organization. I am sure Kriv is working on a trade for another OF.

Of course that is true. Is there any team who can lose either of their 2 top hitters and not get stung? There is no way we have a bat who can replace either of them. But we are not as dependant on hitters to win us ballgames (or, so is the design) this season. That is why I am not worried about position players as much. Just having guys who are MLB ready like Hopper and Keppinger is fine for this club.

Of course, a trade would help us out there a lot.

Once Hopper is back, he could fill in at leadoff, but I wouldn't want him in there for an extended period of time.

The Mets would go from a very good offense to an average one if they lost their top 2.

We would go fom an average offense to a god awful mess and I'm saying if either one had a bad year or significant DL time, not both.

Great article on Stats:

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6641066

The best-selling book Moneyball opened the eyes of many fans to the statistical revolution in baseball.

This revolution actually predates Moneyball by several decades, but it's become more of a phenomenon of late, thanks in part to the popularity of Michael Lewis' book. It's engendered (silly and petty) hostilities between the stats crowd and the traditionalists, and it's led to a great deal of mutual misunderstanding......

OK heres another gem of strategy from jerry:

4/7/07

Harang up to 91 pitches in extreme cold weather early in the year. Just completed the 5th innning and is due up 3rd in the bottom of the 5th.

Gonzalez doubles so now you have a RISP with 1 out in a one run game and a pitcher that should call it a day.

What does numbnuts do? Let the picther hit for himself of course. 1 pitch 1 out runner never scores. Harang goes on to get the first two outs then has to come out after giving up a hit, pen bailes us out and no one scores.

Jerry lovers will say its ok because he didn't give up a run, I say what about the missed opportunity to score and what possible risk/reward thoughts could be going through that dumb bastard's head?

Risking overuse damage to our ace, passing on a chance to score more runs in a close game, for what?

He rarely makes the pitching decision based on where the guy is hitting. He needs to go to the AL or just go home.

Memo to Mr. Grande: They're the Pittsburgh Pirates, not the Pittsburgh Buccos. Please, just say Pirates one time for me, George. I can't listen to this anymore, especially two games in 24-hours.
