Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

Homer and Votto to AAA. I'm fine with that. Don't start the arb clocks now, see you both in September and depending on performance this year you can pencil them on the 25 man for '08.

I'm still of the belief/hope we might see some excess parts traded for a better #5 option.

Hoping I was wrong in figuring Ross for a serious regression to his norm in '07. So far it sure looks like I wasn't but hopefully its just a ST funk.

Homer has work to do
Bailey sent back to minor-league camp

BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Reds reassigned pitcher Homer Bailey to minor-league camp Friday and expect to have him start at Triple-A Louisville this season.
It might be easy for fans to feel disappointed. But the move was expected.
"We're definitely not down on him," Reds manager Jerry Narron said.

Reds closer to having a closer
Healthy Hermanson an appealing option
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Reds aren't going to make any announcement, but the feeling in camp is that they've found their closer.
The question about Dustin Hermanson was whether his back was sound. Through three outings, several bullpen sessions and one very tough play at first, his back has been fine.
If Hermanson can be what he was in the 2005 - when he saved 34 games and had a 2.04 ERA with the Chicago White Sox - one of the biggest questions about the Reds will be answered.

Harang just building up pitch count
Reds notebook
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

SARASOTA, Fla. - Aaron Harang thought he pitched better than his line.
"We were joking about it," he said. "The ball was bounding off the plate or whatever, finding holes."
The box score says Harang got hit around by the Atlanta Braves Sunday in the Reds' 6-5 loss - four runs (three earned) on eight hits.

Per the post game show from today's game, Narron has stated that IF Griffey is ready to start the year it will be in RF. He said he would have let him compete in ST, but with the delay in the injury it is time to move on. He has been working on the position. He also said that Freel will be in CF opening day. It appears Hamilton will be the 4th OF or will start in RF if Griff can't go.

Bring on the Hermanator! Good to see he is healthy. As the article says, this could be HUGE.

Yeah a huge fuck up. Bad back aside this ass clown has a wang-chung fastball and one mediocre year left in him AT BEST. So we're going to keep him and send down younger guys with stuff like Salmon/Burton/Belisle if we don't risk losing them altogether(not sure of their options). We need another old, slop tossing vet in the pen like Custer needed more fucking indians.:smash: :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash:

If you plotted all human beings on a bell curve for intelligence the guy opposite Narron would be one smart motherfucker.

Honestly, if Hermanson nails down the closer job, I think Krivsky will try to swing a deal before the end of spring training. Obviously, they do not need both Stanton and Cormier. As far as I'm concerned, Weathers is expendable, but I think they keep him as a clubhouse/bull pen presence. He seems to be almost a player/coach and Narron (pronounced mor-on in my house) seems to have a hard on for his old ass. There are 16 pitchers currently on the active roster, that means at least 5 have to be sent elsewhere by opening day to make room for Hermanson.

Barring a trade, I think you end up with:
Starters: Arroyo
Harang
Milton
Lohse
Saarloos
Bull Pen: Bray
Burton
Coffey
Cormier
Hermanson
Stanton
Weathers

AAA: Belisle, Coultlangus, Majewski (DL), Ramirez, (Salmon, Shackelford already there)
Cut: Livingston, Wilson (not on active roster)

I agree with Jaxbuck that there are too many old soft-tossers in the pen, but I'd much rather see a healthy Hermanson closing than the Weathers/Stanton combo. It would be nice if Coffey would step up and claim it, but I haven't seen the consistency from him. I really hope they move Frenchie so that there is space on the roster for whoever does not win the 5th spot between Saarloos and Belisle. They are going to need a long reliever. Right now, I think Saarloos gets the nod because I believe Belisle has options.

Belile and Salmon (I think he got the AAA call yesterday) both have options.

No doubt there will be a trade. There has to be 15 teams looking for BP help out there and everyone can use another LF. Cromier seems to be the player of choice among fans and I agree. Even if we have to eat much of his contract, it'd still be worth not losing Burton.

I am going to have to agree with MuchFinch on this one though. Hermanson healthy and in the pen only makes us better. I don't care how many years he has left, as long as this is one of them. Nobody else has stepped up to take the job. Even if he is only good for a few months, at least hold down the fort till Eddie gets back. If a combo of the 2 can close out games for us the entire season, I'd expect this to be a decent year for us.

I vote we trade Milton and Cormier for a jug of Kool-Aid and put Burton on the roster, move Sarloos and Belisle to the rotation and go win this fucking thing!

Milton needs to have a couple good outings before we could even give him away. Or have his arm fly off with one of his pitches today so we can send him to the DL. Either way is going to cost us a lot of money but make us better. I'd hate to see him be the cog in the waterworks for us this year.

Ok, this is just stupid. I found this in a fantasy article, but I think it is appropriate here. If nothing it shows the stupidity of anothe ESPiN writer but Reds fans are the only ones who will understand it.

It is about position battles. Has anyone heard the rumor of Benitez to Cincy or even think this is possible (with our current payroll and BP log jam)?

I love how people just throw things out there without any research.

2. Armando Benitez vs. Brian Wilson
The Red Sox are the best team with a closer quandary, and it's a pretty steep falloff to the Giants. But they're next. San Francisco is telling anyone who'll listen how good Benitez has looked this spring, how he's lost weight, how he's healthy. The San Francisco Chronicle reported Monday that the team is going to make a decision this week about whether or not to trade the big righty, and that his two leading possible destinations are Florida and Cincinnati. Things would be easier for the Giants if Wilson hadn't walked four batters in eight spring innings to this point, or if he hadn't posted a 5.40 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP in his first major-league tour of duty in '06. Still, you sense the Giants would be happy if Wilson would just rise to the occasion and make Benitez irrelevant. I don't see it happening, though. You can't spend too much to get Wilson, and however high (or low) you value Benitez, his fantasy worth probably doesn't change regardless of whether he's traded to those other mediocre (or worse) NL clubs. Remember that last year's first-rounder, Tim Lincecum, could come up and close in a pinch this year, though the team wants to give him a full year's look at being a starter.
