Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

From Freel in the post game:

Freel: "I feel like I can compete and be an unbelievalbe player at one time and then I feel like I've never played baseball in my entire life. I have to be more consistent. When you have a leadoff hitter with a .294 on-base percentage, there's no excuse for that. That's horrible. It's a big key, getting on base for these guys, the superstars on this team, Griffey and Dunn, there's a lot you can do. But I've been doing a lot of right turns on first base and heading to the dugout. I'm professional, I'll be accountable."

Freel: "I just absolutely suck this year. I'm (censored) horrible. I'm a professional, the numbers don't lie. I'm flat-out horrible. I flat-out suck. It's frustrating. Go ahead, print it, it's not anything somebody else isn't saying."

Gotta love a guy who has a HUGE catch and game-winning homer and says "I'm fucking horrible."

Well, he's right. Too bad nobody else in that dugout realizes he's not a good leadoff hitter.

I love to watch him play, and I appreciate his attitude and effort. However, he doesn't belong anywhere near the top of the order and he is a poor baserunner. In my opinion he is getting way too much playing time at 3B at the expense of Encarnacion, who admittedly isn't helping his cause in that department.

Agree 100% but as always am a bit mistified at what EE has done to hurt his cause. IMO you let young guys play through their struggles to see what you've got. On bottom feeding teams who have nothing to offer fans but hope for the future you'd think that would be a no brainer but apparently it isn't.

As far as Freel goes he should play no more than 3 times a week. He isn't an everyday player at any position or a fixture at the top of the order by rotating him through several positions.

He can't explain his stretches of suckitude for the same reason your average high handicapper in golf can't explain his wide discrepencies in his game. If your honest about it, its due to a fundamental lack of ability/skills. A 19 handicap has some good swings but can't repeat it consistently because overall the swing is flawed and the good ones are more luck than anything.

Freel is the same. When he's hot its more luck than his underlying fundamental skill shining through. Luck Can't last forever and when it doesn't you have the real freel.

The Reds' Ryan Freel prepares for impact before getting hit by a pitch in the fifth inning.

MIAMI -- Even Ryan Freel is playing a part in the Cincinnati Reds' surprising surge.
The struggling outfielder hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning last night and the Reds won their fourth straight game, rallying past the Florida Marlins 7-5.
Cincinnati blew an early 3-0 lead and trailed 5-3 before scoring four runs against Armando Benitez (2-5). Freel capped the comeback with his third home run, giving him 15 RBI for the season.

Continued....

Trailing early today. 3-1. Lohse hasn't been that bad except for one half inning. Why is it that everytime the Reds play a team with one or two superstars, they allow that superstar to beat them? When you play the Cardinals, don't pitch to Pujols. When you play the Giants, don't pitch to Bonds. When you play Florida, don't pitch to Cabrera!!!! Pitch around the guys who can single handedly change the game. Take your chances with the guy who only hits 20 HR's a season and bats .275 once in a while.
There's too much pride in some of these pitchers. Greg Maddux never gave in to the slugger just to get a strikeout. You either hit his pitch or he'll get the next guy out. Too many young, and old, pitchers try to be Roger Clemens. Give up the base hits not the bombs.

Of course comparing Kyle Lohse (or Arroyo or even Harang although he actually IS a good pitcher) to Roger Clemens or Greg Maddux is ludicrous, but I get your point....

Ok, as soon as I switched back over Uggla hits one out. So far today Lohse has 59 pitches in 5 innings. Not alot of pitches so thats good. Strike to balls ratio is 42/17. Almost 3:1 which is really good.....you might think. Wild in the strike zone some might call it. No confidence in your breaking pitches another might call it. He gets ahead and then instead of nibbling or making the batters chase his pitch, he grooves one. I think Kyle Lohse could be a hell of a pitcher and if he's still here and Duncan comes over with Larussa we could very well see it someday. Overall strategy and philosophy in his pitching arsenal sucks. If he could ever figure out the right approach he could be successful. Dick Hole is definitely not the one to bring it out in him.:(

Speaking of Cabrera, looks like Jeffrey Maier's (sp?) cousin was sitting front row out in right field tonight . Cabrera hit a ball deep to right field that would most likely have been caught by Hopper, but a fan (with a Marlins hat on, sitting by his buddy with a Reds hat on) reached out and caught it before Hopper could. The umpire was all over it though, and ruled it an out anyways. Doesn't look like ol' Miguel was too happy about it, but it was an out either way. Justice was served, though, as the fan was soon escorted out by security. 4-1 Florida heading to the 7th.

EDIT: A monster shot, #20, for Brandon Phillips. The ball is really carrying well tonight. Dunn with an infield hit, this one is far from over.

Correct. Brandon Phillips is fantastic! I have been singing his praises alot lately but the guy is just money. Everyday something else grabs my attention about him. Wednesday in an interview he says " I want to be like
Barry Larkin was to this team. I want to help this ballclub and give the city and fans of Cincinnati a winner." What more could you want from any athlete playing for your team. Now if we can just get Hamilton back and Griff stays healthy we could find a little magic the second half of this season.

Oh yeah, Edwin just missed tying this one up by about 8feet.

If you made me pick, Phillips is quickly becoming my favorite Red. I hate to get too attached to any professional athlete anymore, as there are more bad things than good that can come out of it, but I hope he is here for the long haul. He does everything well, save for a few base running blunders in the last week. But I can live with those, the way he's been playing!

AAAARRRGGGHHHH! Two run double by Uggla. Another grooved pitch. He should've been outta there after the first single imo. Going to be very tough to come back 4 runs in the last two innings. I see Griff pinch hitting this inning for Lohse probably. Ooops won't be Lohse since Burton is in now. I'd like to see him whiff Cabrera just for the confidence builder.

Shit.

Oh well we wont sweep this series, we can definitely still win it. Anybody else think the Marlins need their own ballpark? The Dolphins need the dirt off of their field too! That ballpark is a damn cavern in center field and that can only lead to Freel killing himself.:tongue2:

I was in the Cory Luebke thread earlier today and he's 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA and 15K's in 17 innings so far in A for the Padres. Adam Dunn for Luebke and whom? Might as well pull the trigger.

Well, they good news about the series in Miami is that if this team was harboring any delusions of getting back into the race or that they are only a bullpen arm or two away from being a contender, they were quelled. Remember when the Reds used to have a slogan every year. I have one for this year... The Cincinnati Reds: Acheiving a whole new level of suckitude!

They've got a week to start the rebuild. Let's see what they can do.
