Reds Tidbits (2006 Season)

Cincy

Reds insider
Thoughts spring to mind as season looms
BY JOHN FAY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
With one month to go before Reds pitchers and catchers report to Sarasota, Fla., here's what should be Priority One on the club's to-do list: signing Aaron Harang long-term.
"It's something we're exploring," Cincinnati general manager Wayne Krivsky said. "We haven't had a lot of conversations since we exchanged arbitration numbers."

Reds acquire Saarloos, sign Bellhorn.

The Reds acquired RHP Kirk Saarloos (pronounced SAHR-lohs) and a player to be named in exchange for RHP David Shafer and a player to be named from the Oakland Athletics today.

Versatile veteran IF Mark Bellhorn has agreed to terms on a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training camp.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Cincinnati Reds added another candidate to fill the fifth starter?s spot yesterday, acquiring right-hander Kirk Saarloos and a player to be named in a trade with the Oakland Athletics.
The Reds sent minor-league reliever David Shafer and a player to be named to Oakland. Shafter had 26 saves for double-A Chattanooga last season. Saarloos, 27, filled a swing role for Oakland in 2006, going 7-7 with two saves and a 4.75 ERA in 16 starts and 19 relief appearances.

That might not be a bad lil pickup...Not one that is going to set the world on fire, but a 7-7 record in the AL with a ERA of mid 4's could translate into a 10-5 record with a 4.0 ERA in the NL...

Lets hope that is a good move and he is fairly young as he is only 27....

I actually like the move a lot. He is a sinkerball pitcher. Assume an improved in D with EE getting another year experience, Gonzales at SS and a full year of Phillips at 2b and a guy who can keep the ball down at the GAB. I really like his chances at a spot in the rotation and if he does not he is versitle and is a nice additon to the pen.

This is waaaayyyy off the cuff, but bet if he doesn't make the rotation they look at him as a closer. Wayne likes pitch to contact and keep it down and this could be they type guy he is looking at. Again, I know it is speculative at best.

The fact that he is a sinkerball pitcher makes it even better...

As for the closers role I really hope that Coffey can lock that job up...That would be the best situation for us...

No, I think you are spot on the possible closer thing. I was thinking that too. I do like this move quite a bit. When you are the Reds and can't go out and sign a 20 game winner, you need to fill your rotation with guys who can win 14. If your starters average a 14-10 record, that gives you 70-50. If the bull pen can go 22-20 (not asking much), that gives you 92 wins. The problem is that the Reds still have Milton and Lohse and I don't think either can win 14.

Lohse had a solid finish to the season last year...He is a guy that seemed to have trouble with the management in Minnesota, but he has good stuff and pitching in the NL I think he could win 14 for us...

Now Milton that is another story...

I wouldn't call it a solid finish. He got spanked in 3 of his last 4 starts. The final one in Pittsburg was a good ending. He had 6 good starts out of 11 for the Reds. Not bad, but not solid either. Hopefully, he will find some consistency this year.

Yeah, but overall pretty solid, especially his 8 inning performance against the Stros...

Anyone have a link to the 40 man roster at the moment...

The reds are trying to sign Everday Eddie to a minor league contract and already did Paul Wilson so they don't count against the 40 man roster...Would be nice if either of those guys could get back to form, especially Paul Wilson and that nice year he had a couple years back...

Rotation:
1. Harang
2. Arroyo
3. Lohse
4. Milton
5. ?

Pen
- Weathers
- Bray
- Stanton
- Coffey
- Majeski

Who are the other guys we have that could man the other spots in our pen and fifth man in the rotation...Overall not a horrible pitching staff especially with improved D.

Matt Belisle and Victor Santos are a couple of names I've seen tossed around for the fifth spot. As scary as that may be.

Belisle has been one of the most up and down guys...If he could just consisntent and stay healthy he might not be a bad 5th man....

All I am looking for is 6 solid innings and to be in the ball game...

Elizardo Ramirez is the other likely candidate. If Homer tears up AAA early in the year, he should be up by June.

Elizardo pitched well until he hit a wall last year...Maybe he can get his shit back together...

As for Homer he is going to need another pitch or two b/c he isnt going to be able to just rely on his fastball to get out major league hitters...
