Reds Tidbits (2006 Season)

I don't really have that much of a problem with it either. I am also assuming that will be his role. 1.7mill was his salary last year and that would be cheaper than Loretta. I'm just tired of them taking the "patching the dam" approach. I haven't seen much building for the future or making moves which will vault the team into contention. It seems like they are firmly commited to building the best .500 team possible this season and hoping the 'Stros and Cards can't pull away. In the current market, I'm not really sure what they can do.

I guess I would have preferred to see them pick up a decent OF with some stick, say a Preston Wilson and move Dunn to 1B. But, with things being the way they are this year, I guess Preston will probably get like a 4 year, $40 mill contract or something stupid. Last year Wilson made $4 mill and he is usually good for 25+ HR and 90+ RBI. I would prefer those numbers in the line up every day to the likely 17-20 HR and 65-70 RBI that the Hatteberg/Conine combo will produce. Hope I'm wrong and they do better. Plus moving Dunn to 1B would improve the D.

On a further note, this team doesn't need to be trading away prospects for 40 year olds. I don't know who these kids were that we sent to Philly, hopefully they are duds.

Conine is right fit, Reds say
Veteran 1B/OF acquired for his leadership, RH bat
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]
One of the reasons the Reds traded for Jeff Conine is he brings veteran leadership, which the club is lacking.
"I've admired him and respected him a long time, just by the way he goes about his business," Reds manager Jerry Narron said. "He plays the game the right way and can bring a lot of leadership to our club."
But don't sew the captain's "C" on Conine's jersey just yet.

The prospects didn't seem like anything to write home about. One was a throw-in from the Phils in the Cory Lidle deal a few years back and the other was a 48th round pick.

Signing a Preston Wilson would be a huge mistake!! Even at $4 mill per, that'd just be a contract we wouldn't need to be stuck with. He's a free swinger, another something we don't need. I'd happily take Conine over him at half or less than any Preston Wilson type player.

There is also the possibility the saved money could net us another arm. I think the Enquirer brought that point up but I don't have the link handy.

One of the prospects was included in that "trade" with Washington, the infielder, iirc. Just keeps getting better and better.

If the luster hasn't worn off Krivsky for anyone yet, they aren't paying attention.

Reds insider
Team not quite out of its league
BY JOHN FAY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
With all the money being thrown around in baseball, it's fair to ask:
Have the Reds been priced out of contention before spring training starts?
The short answer is no.
No one is going to pick them to win the National League Central. In fact, no one is going to pick them to finish higher than fourth in the Central.

Not true. Neither of the prospects traded away were from the Washington deal. Harris (the player you are refering to) was removed from the 40 man roster to make room for Conine. Check your facts before you make nasty statements about Wayne K.

It takes years to transform a team from a longball team to a pitching and D first. Give him some time before you go placing him on the chopping block.

. . . . . . . .
Rather than ponying up cash on the superheated free-agent market, the Reds decided to give away a couple of minor leaguers not considered significant prospects to get Conine at a reasonable rate.

The speedy Moran came to the Reds organization from the Phillies in the 2004 trade that sent the late Cory Lidle to Philadelphia. Moran hit .320 and stole 16 bases in 63 games for Chattanooga last season after hitting .372 in a 10-game stint with Sarasota. Key hit .224 in 35 games for Dayton and .188 in seven games for Sarasota.

The Reds designated utilityman Brendan Harris for assignment to make room for Conine on the 40-man roster.

Homer holds key to season
Reds insider
It's going to come down to Homer.
For the Reds to have a chance to break through and leave the trail of losing seasons behind, Homer Bailey is going to have to be part of the rotation and pitch well.
That is not what the Reds plan to do. Bailey will almost certainly start the year at Triple-A. And there's no guarantee that he's ready for success in the majors.

Good signing!

Ross and Reds agree to $4.5 million, 2-year deal

January 15, 2007
CINCINNATI (AP) -- Catcher David Ross and the Cincinnati Reds agreed Monday to a $4.5 million, two-year contract, a deal that includes a team option for 2009. The 29-year-old Ross was acquired from San Diego last year during spring training and became the starter. With 21 home runs in 90 games, he ranked third among NL catchers.
