Don't know if Portland is your termination point, but if you are only going to be there a couple of hours hop in a cab and head down to the Old Town area and the docks. Then just wander into one of the little taverns on the water to get some steamers and a beer.

Also, grab an Italian Sandwich for me while you are at it. If the Quality Shop in Portland is closed head to Sam's in Lewiston.

Thanks for the info. There are also a ton of microbrewerys in Portland (Allagash, DL Geary, Gritty McDuffs, Casco Bay, etc.). I think Manfred and I are going to spend a few days there next month.

If you ever have the chance, head to Bar Harbor and get on a whale watching cruise. Push your way to the front and center part of the boat.

I've done a whale watching tour here in Boston. It was amazing! We saw several breaches (whales flipping up out of the water), which were really cool to watch. The waters were rough (a tropical storm was rumbling further out), so I was pretty seasick by the time we got back to shore! But I would definitely do it again, next time with some dramamine!

Bar Harbor is a great place. We were there for a few days, and the weather was bad, but I want to go back and do some kayaking and hike Cadillac Mountain. And go back to the Bar Harbor Brewing Co.! Amazing seafood up there as well.

The drive up the coast of Maine is pretty spectacular as well. The wife and I had a nice roadtrip up there this past autumn. Bar Harbor was great, but we didn't find the brewery :( We did find some wicked lobsta though.

I've been whale watching out of Provincetown on the Cape. That was years ago though, but I remember it being very cool. No breaches though. Sushi got lucky. :p

The guide on our boat said we were very luck as the whales were doing some heavy feeding. My wife ended up a bit seasick, but I never felt a thing. I was so focused on the whales I was oblivious to everything else.

We took a 4 mile walk in Acadia. My wife still refers to it as "The March." She drove to the top of the mountain and she refused to get out of the car as the winds were so strong the car was a rocking!

When we went up the mountain, it was so rainy and foggy that we couldn't see anything. We were so bummed! My mother got some great photos after we left (they stayed for a few days after us, and of course it was beautiful the rest of their trip!), and it looked like such a spectacular 360 view of the area. I can't wait to go back.

Renting a canoe on Long Pond is cool too, although maybe not so much in March.
