I just finished up the story mode of RDR2 today, and because I am an awesome/terrible dad I played the entire game through with my 9 year old daughter - with her almost-7 sister mostly following along - and that made this one of the most amazing game experiences of my life. (To be clear, I spent my solo/post-bedtime hours noodling around on side missions and challenges and treasure maps and such, but we did the entire main story and epilogue together.)
So (of course) I understand this game is NOT appropriate for kids in some ways: it's true that the bad language is just constant, and there's all the shootin and stabbin and so much blood... BUT! Considering we've been through the Marvels and Star Warses and Harry Potters, the violence here is not really so crazy, and my kids seem able to understand that they shouldn't talk like these old-timey outlaws. Also the smoking/alcohol stuff is pretty easy to compartmentalize as a part of that era. So this is not a Grand Theft Auto type game at all.
And once we accepted all that as part of the experience, we really went on a journey. Halfway through, my daughter got a few new fish, and she named two of them Dutch and Arthur, but a couple weeks later she was pretty conflicted about Dutch. (We also made a Lego version of Valentine, among other RDR-inspired play.) I read that the main story can end differently depending on how you have played, and so we were really gratified to have intentionally played Arthur as a virtuous character. This game actually sent some pretty positive messages about about moralistic behavior, and I know that my girls will fondly remember Arthur, John, Sadie, Abigail, Charles, Hosea, even Dutch.
And really, wow, the music. Every time something momentous happened, there was just the right context-appropriate song to help you really feel it. It may have gotten a bit dusty here a few times for ol' dad.
And since it sets up the next story so well, I think next we will see if the PS3 still works to continue on to RDR1.
The lack of choice in the overall storyline is my biggest complaint, but overall the character development of Arthur is phenomenal. The music is remarkable (something too many games have skimped on lately).I read that the main story can end differently depending on how you have played, and so we were really gratified to have intentionally played Arthur as a virtuous character. Great game.
P.s. I'm trying to imagine leaving town with Micah the first time with young kids in tow.
Were they lawmen? Because I'm pretty sure it was the entire population of non-field workers. Fortunately enough child and adult labor took place far from home to replenish the population after my massacre. Is that when you break Micah out of jail and then take out a bunch of lawmen on the way out of town? Great mission. I think that was actually right around when my daughter started getting really into the game.
