Recruits Announcing "Signing Week" 2005

Signing day surprises?

Alot has been made about the few number of recruits that the bucks are still on in as signing day approaches.

ANy chance that there are some hidden gems out there that we aren't aware of, that the coaching staff might be working on?

If I remember correctly in 2002 both Nate Salley, and Brandon Mitchell signed at the end, and weren't known to be on the radar screen in January.

I don't know brother but I'm with you here. I don't have a lot of faith this year until bad news gets to be old news for this team. Lets all keep our fingers crossed though.

Not at this late in the game. I am too lazy to look it up, but I am sure Brandon Mitchell and Nate Salley were well committed by january and on the radar screen before that. So no, no new good surprises for us on signing day. If the last few years trend has shown us anything, be prepared to be disappointed.

Curtis Terry is about the only guy I can remember that came in almost completely out of the blue at the end. This stuff is so magnified and overanalyzed now, that there's almost no way anything like that could happen, really.

i don't know if this belongs in a seperate thread or not, but it is relevent to the subject. does anyone know if coaches send LOIs to players that have committed to a different school? for example, let's say that rico mccoy was truly torn between tennesse and tosu, do the coaches still fax him a LOI, possibly hoping for a last minute change of heart? now i know they couldn't always use this tatic, if the coaches knew they had an already full class, but i could see it happening in this class, with our number of available scholarships remaining. i wouldn't see the harm in it, there's nothing to lose.

Given that we've only had a handful of kids in for official visits the last 6 WEEKS, and only have 4 on the radar with offers, I dont think we see any suprises. I quite frankly will be suprised if we add any more players to this class.

Yeah-- I jsut don't know if there are enough guys out there that any one of them is going to blindside you.... Sometimed when you're in on 20 or whatever guys, and Guy #20 (in the order that you're paying attention to them) commits.. it can be a nice surprise... Nader Abdallah for example... not like the kid was off the radar, but he wasn't the focus of a lot of talk either... (But then again... his name wasn't Fred either)... but I just don't see those type of guys out there.

I just don't get how this year is going for recruiting. We have about 5-6 scholarships still open but only 3 guys still on the radar? Or am I missing someone... we just have Gwaltney, Ashley & Wilson??? With McCarthy & Kearney committing and with HH saying that we canceled Sledge's trip to Columbus... I am getting really frustrated with how this year is going.

Are we missing something? I can understand a narrow focus this time of year but this is ridiculous. Or has all of these allegations gotten to the coaching staff eating their time away and maybe are realizing that recruiting this year is nearly impossible with every recruit hearing about ESPN and are basically giving up on this year and starting to focus on next year (As Tressel has already visited some '06 recruits)

Just seems odd and very frustrating for us fans that are following this.

Without overthinking this.... and making assumptions about motivations or hindrances... I make this prediction....

If you remember to... Think back to this post that you made on this thread this time next year... I am going to bet that you're going to be very happy that those 2 or 3 or 4 "extra" scholarships are available then.

i hope the fact that we aren't attempting to fill our slots is not a sign that the staff feels there is a strong possibility that we will lose scholarships due to sanctions.

hopefully they are just banking for next year. I undersatnd the '06 Ohio crop will be very strong.

anyone know how many slots we were slated to have available for '06?

come back from the ledge Piney.....everything will be alright. In honor of your frustration, I am giving you the "Johnny Walker" Award for the most pestimistic post on this thread.....

great flick...you need some laughs.

I don't think the allegations have had a major effect on recruiting this year, sure they have had to answer some questions, but if you have looked at the overall quality of this class as it stands right now, we are virtually a lock for a top ten class...not to shabby considering the issues surronding the program as I type this. Almost every year, their are scholies left over. I believe their was a decision made to either bank 2-3 of these scholies for next year or reward them to a walk on.

Would you rather a scholie be used on a recruit who is borderline academically and might not make it to graduation or reward it to a senior walk on who has been busting his butt for a few years and paying his way and doesnt complain?

I think our recruiting is fine and will continue to be strong. If we land JG and Wilson we will be near the top 5 with the quality of our class. Take a look at Virginia, they have somewhere around 20-25 verbals, yet their class is not as strong as our 15-16. Keep the faith.
