RECRUITING FORUM CHANGES

Everyone does realize we have a search function within each thread?
Most people know this, but it isn't very intuitive, particularly for really, really large threads. If the status quo continues, most of these threads on specific players will become a mess of topical commentary. This issue hasn't reared its head yet because BP hasn't been around long enough, but applying the current guidelines to past players, imagine sifting through a 400 page Mike Doss thread in 2006 in the NFL forum to look up old information from his high school days. What if the membership of BP doubles ... triples ... grows by a factor of ten? The number of posts in each thread will probably grow proportionally.

Take Troy Smith's recruiting thread, then merge in every Troy Smith discussion that has ever popped up on BP, a couple dozen Smith v. Zwick threads, a half dozen on incidents that Troy has been involved in, yadda yadda yadda, and then move all this to the NFL board on Draft Day 2007. It'll just be a mess.

In my mind, it would be easier to browse if the unneccassary chatter were pruned from the recruiting threads after the recruiting season is over, then lock down the entire sub-forum for that recruiting year.

That is the primary problem, not only with recruiting threads, but also with any other important topic, ranging from the "Smith vs. Zwick" battle to Jon Skeete's arrest for dealing weed. I have no problem pruning threads, as long as everyone is aware that his/her post count may be dramatically reduced by such a process. Even a top flight player like Troy Smith or Teddy Ginn should have, at most, a dozen pages in his thread (Smith's is already 136 pages - not counting the "Smith vs. Zwick" thread, and Ginn's is 144).

I would be more than happy to begin pruning threads, if the other admins are in agreement with such a policy.

I don't think that Dryden's idea of 'pruning' would affect post counts. I think he's suggesting that each new 2006 recruit get a new official thread in the football forum, with the first post in that thread showing a link to the BP recruiting thread for that player. Those threads would be retained in the 2006 recruiting forum.

I would be against the idea of actually deleting portions of threads in order to make them smaller.

Personally, I like the idea of a single thread that follows a kid from his HS days, through his career in Columbus, then his career after tOSU.

Let's at least cut out the exaggeration...unless he is a superstar, most of the current player and recruiting threads are very manageable and how much actual searching do people use or want to use? I would venture to guess that most are interested in current news and that is not difficult to find.

Take Troy Smith's recruiting thread, then merge in every Troy Smith discussion that has ever popped up on BP, a couple dozen Smith v. Who said to merge every thread concerning that player? There are plenty of discussions involving players that do not end up merged...

I realize we are using some intentional hyperbole here, but what some may see as a "complete mess" others will view as complete organization.

Here's an idea, take it or leave it:

In the first post in the thread, include a link to the start of his collegiate career, and later (if applicable) his professional career. Not sure if that link would go to the posts after LOI day, or after they enroll... but you get the idea.

That would allow you to look back without cluttering up the board with three threads about the same player.

Good Idea. One thread. Links on the first post to different sections in that thread: High School, OSU, Professional, Post Career ... I LIKE!
