He has truly sharp eye for football

Former OSU star Smith sizes up OSU, title game
Monday, January 08, 2007
In two seasons as an ESPN college football analyst, Robert Smith has demonstrated to the na tion's viewers what Northeast Ohio fans have known for years: He has a sharp eye for the game and routinely makes salient points. Smith never hes itates to peel away one more layer to offer a fresh perspec tive rather than regurgitate standard assessments.
ESPN is running a "For the Love of the Game" on Robert Smith right now, for all of us who are still at home (even if you are on a work call)... the irony of that title is slightly funny, ask Elliot Uzelek.
I just watched it as well. So I looked him up on the net. Found some interesting stuff. Here's an interesting article about him from 2004.

Adrian Peterson's new target: Robert Smith's Vikings rushing record
BY DON SEEHOLZER
Pioneer Press
Article Last Updated: 12/16/2007

With 1,200 yards rushing and just three games remaining, Adrian Peterson seemingly has no shot at breaking Eric Dickerson's 1983 NFL rookie record of 1,808 yards, but the Vikings' single-season mark of 1,521 is still within reach.

Robert Smith, who set that record in 2000, said he wouldn't be disappointed to see it or his team career record of 6,818 yards fall.

"I said it when Adrian got drafted," he said. "I fully expected that, if he stayed healthy, it wouldn't be far into the next decade before I lose the team rushing record. I expect him to break every record that I have there."

Smith, now a college football analyst for ESPN, said setting the records was more important to him than keeping them because of all the adversity and injuries he had to overcome.

He never had to deal with a torn lateral collateral ligament like the one that cost Peterson two games recently, but Smith said he can relate to what the Vikings' star rookie is going through.

"His first game back, he looked fantastic," Smith said of Peterson's 116-yard performance against Detroit. "It was incredible to me that he was able to move the way he was with the brace on. But it's certainly in your head, there's no question about it, when you've got a brace like that on."

The same Smith I knew at OSU:!

He did have tOSU as one of his top 3 teams in the country next year and Beanie as one of his top 3 Heisman candidates though.

Kyle Turley To Robert Smith: ?*BLEEP* You, Then!?

Good to see Kyle Turley is still his same ol? fiery self. The ex-Saint, ex-Ram & ex-Chief best known for his Jets helmet toss was on Dan Le Batard?s radio show on Wednesday, talking about the problems many former NFL players are having trying to get disability benefits.

Joining Turley in the discussion was ex-Viking Robert Smith, putting the point forward for the NFL Players? Association. And what started out as a calm debate eventually turned a bit nasty.

Turley argues that the current disability system is ?corrupt?, and that retired players in need of benefits have been victims of ?neglect? by the league and the union.

Smith counters that the recipients of NFL disability are the same percentage as U.S. citizens who get Social Security - and that monetary benefits for players have ?has gone up every single time.?

The discussion did become heated at times, as Turley & Smith talked over each other at certain points, so you couldn?t understand either one. But after 21 minutes of somewhat civil discourse, Kyle finally erupted at Robert:

?This is a serious issue. Families are affected, people are becoming homeless, living in shelters. Do you not see a problem with that? Well, f? you, then!?

Guys who either received a free college education or millions (or tens of millions) of dollars to play their game professionally, or both, complaining about their disability benefits?

FWIW, Turley got $11m from the Rams when he went over there in 2003 from the Saints. I know Turley was also fairly philanthropic and once gave an entire game day check to one of his charities, but no matter, Turley made more in one single season where he didn't even do anything due to his "back problems," than I'll make in the next 35 years of my life.

No. Fuck you, Kyle Turley.

And the horse you rode in on.

What a pathetic loser. If you had an NFL career that paid you that much and you are hanging around for you disability check, guess what dude, with disability comes a lifestyle adjustment and you had every opportunity to set up your own disability plan and pay into it just like the rest of us. Bite one.

I didn't realize all of the players from the 60's made millions of dollars and had a college education.

Guess you do learn something everyday.

Turley is fighting for a "lost" generation of football players who made close to the same amount an average person on salary made at that time, but are now paying for it through injuries. Of course it was a choice for the guys to play football during a time athletes weren't neccesarily paid like stars. I don't see anything wrong with a guy willing to sacrifice more of his paycheck to take care of former players going through financial troubles. The NFL should do a better job of addressing the needs of players who built the league to what it has become today. The NFL is a multi-billion dollar company, and they can't sacrifice a few dollars to better the lives of people who can't walk anymore because they destroyed their knees in the 60's-70's? Seems greedy to me.

Not every former football player from past decades can turn into John Madden or Dan Deirdorf or whoever you want to name.

Guys back then didn't make millions, and many need/should be receiving benefits to allow for treatment directly related to playing days. Many don't qualify for various reasons.
