RB Maurice Wells (Official Thread)

my question is does he show any toughness in any of the film as in taking on and breaking tackles or solid run blocking at all?

There is a lot of video but he is the ball carrier in every play so there is no way to tell what kind of blocker he is. He also rarely had to break tackles because he either made a guy miss or just flat outran everyone on the field. There was only one play I can recall he broke a tackle and took it the distance. With his size duability will be a question, especially in the Big Ten, but I'm sure the staff will take their chances.

If there is any doubt about how Tresell would use a "small" back, just watch this past Hula Bowl game where the OSU style offense was used with very good execution, and Russell just tore it up. I don't see a supposedly small back like Wels being at a disadvantage on a Tressel team.

For those that have seen live film of him who would you compare him to.........Sproles?????

I think he is bigger than Sproles (isn't Sproles about 5'-8" or 5'-9")- Wells is 5'-10" or 5'-11"- he is currently 195lb's and said he will play at 200lb's in college- plus Wells is pretty strong 300lb bench and 450 squat

I heard a comparison made to Warrick Dunn- I would agree that they are probably similar stature wise but I believe Wells is faster- 4.38 40

Well the Rivals update today on Wells was promising. Mom is still pushing for Ohio State and Maurice recently received a post card from Coach Tressel which he seemed to appreciate. Landing this kid would be huge.

ysu, there was a Rivals article a while back that stated Conley offered Wells without JT ever seeing Wells on film. Whether that's exactly how it went down is anyone's guess but that's what was reported. After seeing his video I understand why Conley would feel that way. Wells' video was more impressive than Justin King and Derrick Williams' video, IMO.

It is somewhat true.

Generally, the area coach has the right to "nominate" a kid for consideration by staff. Tressel has enough faith in Conley that he "allowed" him to make a offer before Tressel could meet with Wells in person. They had talked on the phone and Tressel had seen tape of him, but could not recall it at the time Conley wanted to offer.

If there is one thing we should have all learned, is that offers this early, really do not mean a whole lot, from both sides. Kids really start changing when their front yard and street look like a airport taxi runway, full of coaches wanting to get their chance to talk to the kid. Having spent time with Wells, I think this will happen with him.

The good news is that he already is a Buckeye fan, has a bunch of OSU gear and has some family connections in town. Bill Conley has developed a good relationship with him early and got Tressel involved early.

We are working hard to insure he comes to OSU camp.

Usually when you go after a stud from across the country, it's the parents that are the toughest to convince. Luckily we've already got that part on our side. Hopefully Maurice will be up for camp this summer and for a game or two in the fall.

Latest update.... Sounds pretty good even though Conley retired. Winning Mom over is half the battle :)
One of his favorites, Ohio State, has experienced a coaching staff change.

"They offered really early in writing and I'm still getting a lot of mail. The only thing is that the person who was recruiting me retired just recently. I don't know if that weighs in or anything. He said I was the best running back that they'd seen period since Maurice Clarett. He liked me a lot. I don't know if that's going to change anything or not. I had no idea that it was going to happen. I saw it on ESPN. I'm still getting hand-written letters from Coach Tressel though."

Maurice said that all schools who are recruiting him are sending him hand-written letters.

His current top five in the order he named them are USC, Ohio State, Georgia Tech, Georgia, and Notre Dame.

"I still like USC, Ohio State, Georgia Tech, Georgia, (pause) and Notre Dame."

In a prior update it was revealed that his mother prefers that he go to Ohio State since his family is from that area and he lived near Columbus, Ohio until moving to Jacksonville a couple of years ago.

"She wants me to go to Ohio to be with my family, but she's not putting any pressure on me."

Kid mentions USC first, parent(s) state a preference for Coach Tressel and tOSU. Sound familiar, anyone?:roll2: I don't mean to get bummed out on this kid already, but this trend is really starting to bother me, and I hope Wells puts an end to it.
