RB Maurice Wells (Official Thread)

MoW receiving his AA invite

Later in the day Scout.com’s No. 7 rated running back in the country accepted his jersey in front of family members, teammates and his coaching staff. Like Evans, his father is a military man.

“It’s an honor to me to be able to help represent the military and give something back,” Wells said. “This is the icing on the cake to be one of only 78 players to be selected for the game.”

What’s up next for the five-star standout?

“We got Ribault this week and the playoffs after that,” he said. “I have already visited Maryland and Southern Cal. I also have visits set up for Ohio State and Georgia Tech. Those are my four top schools. I will also take a fifth visit to possibly Florida State, Notre Dame and LSU.”

Sandalwood’s head coach Adam Geis considers his star-running back the cornerstone of his program.

“Maurice is a great, humble kid that put us on the map,” he said. “We have had two solid seasons and he’s the one that put us over the top. What’s separates him from the rest is his speed.”

Despite missing three games with a hip pointer, Wells was still able to rush for an impressive 1,450 yards in six games played.

Wstripes ???

wstripes,
Can I ask what makes you have those assuptions?? Totally not being facetious, just asking if you have read or heard anything to indicate what your thinking? GT doesn't make sense to me. If Maurice wants a system that's set up to feature a running back and also have a good chance to go to the next level; OSU is a better choice ... but then again I am bias haha. I welcome any of your input though wstripes, thanks.

I cannot wait until the AA game. Thats going to be a nerve racking day for me. We got a chance and thats all anyone can ask. He'd look great in a Scarlet and Grey uniform !!!

no inside info here... but I cannot recall a time where Mo Wells has been quoted that GT doesn't get a mention.... they have been a constant (as has OSU)...

other tidbits... Mo attended the Atlanta Nike camp.. where he was Camp MVP.. and I believe the only school camp he attended was GT... he knows GT coaches well..

GT lists 4 Jacksonville players on the roster... but I remember reading that two players from Sandalwood? are (red shirts?) freshmen at GT ... the implication was there that this was significant... and was a factor in Marvin Sapp chosing GT..

No Timetable; Looking To Play Early
Busy and Fast-Paced
By Allen Wallace
National Recruiting Editor

Florida RB Maurice Wells (5-10, 185, 4.4, ranked by Scout.com as the nation's 7th best RB) visited USC on 10/8 and was at Maryland this past weekend (10/30). His host was true freshman Chris Varner and Wells was the only recruit on an official visit. "The game against Florida State was awesome," said Wells. "A lot of people doubted Maryland, but they came out and pretty much dominated..."

RB Maurice Wells from Jacksonville Sandalwood (FL) has already taken two official visits (USC and Maryland) and has two more set up to Georgia Tech (12/17) and Ohio State(11/20).
He visited USC on 10/8 and was at Maryland this past weekend (10/30). His host was true freshman Chris Varner and Maurice was the only recruit on an official visit. "The game against Florida State was awesome," said Wells. "A lot of people doubted Maryland, but they came out and pretty much dominated.

"I flew into Maryland on Sat morning and got to tour the city. It was real nice. The campus is cool and it was a lot of fun hanging out with the players after the game. I got to talk to Ray Lewis' little brother, Keon Lattimore. He's from Florida too, but he loves the area there. Everyone says the location is the best because it's so close to DC and Baltimore. I also love my opportunity to play early there.

"My visit to USC was good too. L.A. is different. They are pretty much in downtown, but I liked Hollywood and Beverly Hills a lot. The people weren't too different. They are really easy to get along with, just like at Maryland. Los Angeles and Baltimore are both really busy and fast-paced.

"I'm really impressed with USC because they are #1 and are undefeated. They've had some tough games and have beaten some good teams. I've been really impressed with all of my favorites though. Maryland just had a great win over Florida State and Georgia Tech is improving. Ohio State has a couple of bad games, but I'm not worried about them.

Maurice favors USC, Maryland, Georgia Tech and Ohio State solidly over Florida State, Notre Dame and North Carolina. All have offered. He has over 20 total offers.

"I'll try to take my final visit to either Notre Dame, Florida State or North Carolina. Right now Georgia Tech and Ohio State seem to be recruiting me the hardest. They send the most mail and we talk the longest. Maryland is also showing a lot of interest too. I like Georgia Tech because they are in the ACC and will be needing a RB.

"Once I feel like I've found the place for me I'll commit. I haven't set any kind of timetable or anything. There's gonna be competition everywhere, but I want to be able to play early for a program that is going somewhere. I want to contribute on a successful team. Competition doesn't scare me because I feel I’m the best player out there."

Eight game (6-2) season stats: 1300 yds rushing/12 TDs. Missed two games with hip pointer.

Saint Marches Off with this Week's Star Performer

By Jeff Prosser
First Coast News Sports

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- At Sandalwood, they go to the Wells early and often. Saints senior running back Maurice Wells is this week's Sideline '04 Star Performer after another 200-yard rushing game on his resume.

Wells ran for 242 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-0 win over Ribault friday night, going over 5,000 yards for his illustrious career.

"Maurice has had a great career," Saints head coach Adam Geis says. "He's got 16-hundred yards this season and it could be 2,000. He's come out early in a couple of games that were blow-outs."

"I think I've gotten better this season," Wells added. "We have more playmakers on this year's team so I have a litle different role."

Last year Wells set the Jacksonville single-season rushing record and his play has definitely caught the eyes of the top College programs in the country. Wells has already visited Southern Cal , Florida, FSU, and Maryland and will head to Ohio State next week for the Michigan game.

Where will he wind up?

"I have some favorites but all of my top four (Maryland, Georgia Tech, USC, Ohio St.) are still in the picture. I've enjoyed the recruiting process and have lots of great options."

In addition to being a great player, Wells is also a great student. For this Star Performer all's well that ends Wells.

I know some people think he is leaning towards GT, but looking at the competition, it sure does look favorable for Ohio State. Especially with the huge need to sign some good Rb's at Ohio in this Class. USC is set at RB for a few years with Bush and Co.
No offense, but I think OSU is more competative than GT or Maryland. Although they are good schools, Ohio State will get more national coverage and the chances to go all the way to the NC are far better at OSU. Add to that the great Offensive line coming in and the potential to go Pro and its still looking GREAT for OSU!!!

MoW moves into the 2nd round of playoffs

http://jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/111304/hig_17179961.shtml

Star of the night: Maurice Wells rushed for 245 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Saints (8-3) past the host Seminoles (7-4) and into the second round of the Class 6A playoffs.

Turning point: After Seminole scored to close to 20-14, Wells finished off a 65-yard drive to extend the lead to 28-14.

On defense: Sandalwood defensive backs intercepted passes on three consecutive Seminole drives.

Fast facts: Seminole had a drive stall on Sandalwood's 14, when the Saints recovered a fumble. ... Sandalwood forced five turnovers. ... The Saints will face Apopka on the road in a regional semifinal.

They said it: "There was a time there in the second half that the game could have gone either way, but Maurice took the game over for us." -- Sandalwood coach Adam Geis.

Sandalwood now plays Eric Sledge and Apopka

FWIW- this article on tonight's Apopka/Sandalwood playoff game mentions that Wells is down to GTech/tOSU.

The challenge for the Blue Darters this week is to hem in one of the state's great backs. Sandalwood has a huge offensive line in front of Maurice Wells, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound senior who can turn off-tackle handoffs into a highlight reel.

Wells ran his way onto All-America teams with 3,076 yards and 31 touchdowns in 13 games as a junior. This season, he missed two starts with a hip pointer but is back to full speed and has 1,807 yards in nine games -- again averaging more than 200 yards per game.

Wells, who has narrowed his college choices to Ohio State and Georgia Tech, swiveled through Seminole for 245 yards in a 35-14 rout last week.
