RB Maurice Clarett (B1G Freshman of the Year, National Champion)

SI.com truths and rumors

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/scorecard/09/07/truth.rumors.nfl/index.html

According to two sources, Maurice Clarett is already $1 million in debt from legal fees for his fight with the NFL and other costs. According to associates, Clarett even turned down a traditional signing bonus of $413,000 in his original contract with Denver because lawyer David Kenner wanted incentives that would pay Clarett if he became a star. That all backfired after a series of off-field events resulted in Clarett being cut. He reported to training camp at 248 pounds (at least 20 pounds overweight), was slow to return from an injury, had run-ins with coaches and was even found drinking alcohol in the team's weight room.

I wondered what caused Shanahan to cut MoC so quickly. I thought that Clarett would do something in the NFL and that the 3rd round, while early, wasn't rediculous. I also thought that he would get his act together at least briefly to prove he could rise about his mistakes. Obviously I was wrong.

I've always wondered who was paying all this expenses (housing, training, and lawyers, etc.). Apparently the answer is nobody.

I predict that (in the not to distant future) the next news that you hear about him will involve bankruptcy court.

there's two entities that deserve to share in this misery...

1) the attorney who convinced MoC that he could beat the NFL .. Mo should declare bankruptcy so he doesn't have to pay this carcinogenic .. or better yet, sue the attorney for misrepresentation and shitty counsel

2) ESPN... because they fueled all this crap... and now they back away because Mo has cooties...

slimeballs... all of them

I continue to have mixed feelings... this kid could have had one helluva life had he had good counsel... but now, he's a half step away from sleeping in the streets... such a waste

Does anyone remember the speculation when 13 was suspended that he might go to the CFL or Arena League for a season? Of course, he thought that he was too good for that, and chose to sit on his ass for two years instead.

One has to wonder if teams in either of those leagues would take his side show act now...

Unfortunately for us Ohio State fans, all this guy has to fall back on is his career at Ohio State.

Maybe not. He has burned bridges big time. It's now been a long time and there have been two NCAA investigations. Trev has been fired. Tom Friend isn't exactly a central figure there. The May Queen probably is next to go.

Espin has too much riding on revenues generated by OSU in football and basketball to give Clarett any airtime. No, I think this thing is over and he has just blown it all.

I would be more worried if he went to Denver and really did well, because then it would have been non-stop bad mouthing of Ohio State and constant attention mongering.

I agree with you YSU, this story is not over, but I think that our role in it is.

Just when I didn't think he could get any dumber...drinking in the weight room?

He may not have been a great NFL runner, but he would have been a first round pick. He would have gotten a fat signing bonus. He would have AT LEAST made the team for a year (first round picks do not get cut). He could have sucked and still had a three-four year career based on his potential.

Now he has nothing. Wish I could say I feel sorry for him. But I don't.
