RB Maurice Clarett (B1G Freshman of the Year, National Champion)

I think when Maurice was in football most cannot really argue his work ethic. The kid straight up worked his butt off! Not to mention setting the squat record for OSU at 710 FOR ANY BODY. I know he did us plenty of harm, and for that I'll always remember him. Besides that mess he was a close second to Mike D'Andrea as my favorite player that National Championship year (only reason Mike was my fav. was cuz I was a junior that yera and I was amazed at the guys strength and well I was hoping to copy that).

I can still remember that WSU game where he was a freak'n bowling ball. Hopefully he can get it going in the right direction because he's a good football player.

Mo Clarett's one great strength at running back is something that will translate well in the NFL. He rarely got stopped at the line of scrimmage or behind it. He always banged out one or two yards on those poor plays. IMHO, that is a skill that has higher value in the League than breakaway speed.

You gotta feel for Lydell. That guy puts his heart into the game and worked his butt off in college. Then a half-asser get drafted higher than he does. I know its unrealistic to be drafted off pure work ethic, but wouldn't it be nice to see people like Lydell get drafted because you can count on his willingness to give 110% every practice?

Lydell's 110% = MoC's 10%

Argue numbers, stat's, work ethic, or anything else you like...the truth is this: MoC will never amount to squat in the NFL, if for only one reason....he will be hurt. The guy is a walking injury report.

I find it amazing there are so many here that support MoC now, especially after all the venom I have seen directed his way on this board. At the same time, though, some time has passed, and I think many here are finally past him and his saga....I personally am still holding my breath, as every time in the past I thought we had finally seen the last of him, something new happened, and it was always bad. Hopefully he will no longer haunt tOSU.

I am feeling similiar to osugrad21, in that I don't really give two shits about Clarett anymore. I honestly know he will fail...and I don't have any doubt about that. He is going to hurt himself repeatedly, and miss games, and he'll never be able to put it together enough to be memorable. How he acts off the field...well, who knows? Again, I don't really care - I'm glad he isn't here anymore, but my knowledge of his future failure is based solely upon my intuition that he simply cannot make it through an NFL season healthy.

Mike Hart had 1148 yds. his freshman year. Peterson had 1925 on 339 carries. (See Anthony Davis)

As far as Shanahan goes... If he doesn't pick Clarett, someone else does... early in the fourth. They know what they are getting. They know talent better than either one of us ever will.

So as far as ridiculous statements go, just about your whole post is just that. Get your numbers right before you call someone else ridiculous or a joke.

Yes he made some bad decisions, but you nor I know the whole story behind that either. Don't believe everything you read or hear. I have little doubt if he plays for OSU that second year, they repeat as NC and he is in at least the Heisman ballotting. (Probably wins it.) If he stays a third year, similar results. First pick in the first round and YOU LOVE HIM.
First, I don't know where you get your numbers, b/c Hart had 1455 yards rushing in 2004. Therefore, I think you're the one who needs to get the numbers right, not me.

Second, as far as your comment that someone else would have picked Clarett in the 4th round if Shanahan didn't in the fourth, then you must know something more than all the expert analysts and NFL coaches who were all saying that Clarett was a sixth or seventh round pick.

Finally, you did get one thing right -- I would love Clarett if he would have kept his head on straight, would have played for us for two more years, and won a Heisman and brought another NC to tOSU. However, the whole reason that I don't like him is that he got greedy and took every chance he could get to drag the Buckeye name through the mud, all to increase his own draft stock (notice I am not even close to being the only one who thinks this way -- merely check out the rest of this thread). Your argument is absurd b/c it's tantamount to saying, "If person X didn't do a bunch of bad things, you'd think he's a good guy." Well of course -- what you don't realize is that doing bad things causes everyone to think he's a bad guy.

That's if he even plays at all. Tatum Bell will probably be the feature back there this year.

The NFL has never been scared away by character issues. They take wife-beaters, thugs, malcontents, druggies without a concern. If they think the guy can put a butt in a seat they'll take him.

So given their lack of fear about his personal life why not take Clarett? AS one of the talking heads pointed out on Saturday night, "He's (MoC) a player. He proved that to me when he steals the ball back on the interception in the Fiesta Bowl. That showed me his determination." I remember the play well. It made a huge swing in the game, turning what was a potential game breaker into 3 points for the bucks.

newsflash....that was 2.5 years ago......I have serious doubts about his ability to handle the pressures of the NFL when he couldn't handle college when apparently everything was handed to him.

It's become clear since Saturday night that the Oakland Raiders (of course) were strongly considering taking Clarett in the 4th round, and since the Broncos didn't have a pick in that round, #101 was probably their last chance to get him. As for "expert analysts", how many of them sit in on NFL draft meetings? As for NFL coaches, do you really expect them to announce their draft boards ahead of time?

I stand corrected on Mike Hart's numbers. The website I looked it up on omitted some games for some reason. 1455 on 282 carries. So you really got me with that one. Hart had 218 more yds than Clarett with 61 more carries. Completely eclipsed him. :roll2: Let's do the math again... 61 more carries x 5.6 yds. per (once again very conservative considering who he was injured against.) = 342 yds. + 1237 = 1579 yds. (Thats what I meant by your numbers.) You can't take away from someone's abilities because of the system he is in. Hart was the only guy that carried the ball for scUM. Maurice also had 18 total tds, Hart had 10.

Obviously all the "experts" you take such high stock in were WRONG. Oakland wanted him in the 4th. (and are wrong every year about where someone will go.) See Willis McGahee. A lot of "experts" said he would be a second day pick. Oops first rounder.
The "experts" you speak of also thought he would slip because he was out of football so long. Not because of his attitude.

So "everyone" thinks Cris Carter is an ass? How about Robert Smith? Albert Dukes? Troy Smith? Art Schlichter? Shall I go on?

Listen dude... you have your opinion and I have mine. Do you know exactly what happened while he was at OSU? No... neither do I. Do you think Andy Geiger told everyone the 100% truth about what happened? I hope you don't. Do I think that athletes at almost every school get a lot of what Clarett said he got? Most definately. We got caught and I really don't believe that AG would stand up in front of the media and say, sure we gave him a car, a job he didn't have to be at, and A's in classes he slept through. Not gonna happen even if it was true.

I am not by any means giving MoC a free ticket. As I said before he did make some mistakes and bad decisions. But so did some high up people at OSU. How many and to what degree, I don't know and neither does anyone else here. We all have different opinions on what happened. Who you believe is up to you but it does not make it true.

Bottom line is Maurice has paid for his mistakes. He will continue to literally pay for them with the decreased salary he will receive. Let it go...

Ummmm, now I might be echoing a few already well made points here... but... aren't we expending a bit too much emotional energy-- or whatever kind of energy-- on our friend Maurice here.

So what... the Broncos took him... big deal. 3rd round, 5th round... 7th round.. UFA, it doesn't matter. There is some talent there, and either he uses it or he doesn't... either he stays healthy or doesn't, either he keeps his mouth shut and stays in line or he doesn't. Bottom line is that its Shanahan and the Broncos problem now.

Look, I'm not making any excuses for Maurice, but any of you who are surpresed/mad/disappointed that he's going to get his shot in "the League", I'm sorry, but it was going to happen. How many chances did Lawrence Phillips get? (The list goes on and on.) Running Backs are like Sprinters, you can't put in what God has left out... and Maurice has "it" whatever "it" is.... so he's getting his chance, and to be honest I really don't care whether he pisses it away or is in the Pro Bowl this year... I really don't... I've got Ohio State to worry about. The only way I give two shits what Mo Does is if Denver and Cleveland play in the Playoffs and Mo becomes the next John Elway... but until then... he's a rookie who hasn't even made a roster yet.

I really can't comment on his health. He did get a stinger... which just takes a long time to heal. I think he also had a minor knee surgery too, but played the following week on it. Can't remember any other injuries.

I agree.... Even if he doesn't, so what they lose a third round pick. They can make up for it with all the picks they have next year.

Actually it is quite sad to hope someone fails, no matter who they are. Even my wife was pissed when they called MoC's name. She said "I was hoping he wouldn't get drafted." I just shook my head. (I mean I can argue with you guys, you don't cook my dinner.:))

If they think the guy can put a butt in a seat they'll take him.

Dind ding ding! We have a winner. How many players were drafted over the weekend? Over 230? And what player has been getting more air-time than almost all others combined? MoC. Wherever Denver plays this year, folks will go to see MoC play/get hurt/whatever. And if MoC turns out to be the diamond in the rough that Denver thinks he is, it's all gravy...

Newsflash: That makes Maurice about 21 years old.

I would worry about a two year layoff much more if we were talking about someone in his 30's.

I could be wrong, But I don't think his ability to play has been hurt. It's the un-measureables that would scare me off of drafting him and those seem to be things that NFL teams could care less about.
