RB Maurice Clarett (B1G Freshman of the Year, National Champion)

OSU's football program has taken a public beating over the past couple years - fair or not - and having MoC or Tress there only makes them the topic of conversation in the media.

You don't think NOT having them there will be "news worthy"?

Which is why this, if true, is ridiculous- you want to slight someone who has dirt on you? Brilliant.

I still harbor about as much animocity towards MoC as I did about 8-9 years ago, but he really ought to have been invited like every player on that team down to the bench players are. And Tress too.

I'm afraid the media will make it a topic of conversation if they aren't there, as well. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Had there not been an apparent change in the young man over these years I'd have to say that I'd agree with you. The fact, however, remains that he's apparently picked himself up by his bootstraps and risen from what few could to be the man that he is today. Is he perfect? No. Is he a better man than he was back then? All signs in the magic 8-ball point to yes.

I believe that he has shown honest growth and contrition and with that I've personally been able to let go of any problems I've had with him.

I do believe that it's a minor-league move to not invite either of these two... Very poor form.

But that's just me.

I'd like to know what UFM might think. MoC was a huge part of that team. He was a Buckeye and a Champion. More importantly though..he was a freshman and a successful one at that. I've been thinking that both in college and the pros that the league or school should appoint a chapparone to each first year player to help them deal with outside influences so common nowadays. These frosh and rookies are an investment to both. Making sure they are on the right track and free from terrible outside influences away from school and team activity should be a key to thier development.

If MoC really has changed/grown up..and I tend to believe he has..I think he could be a benefit to a future stud freshman that might be influenced into dipping his toe into the murky waters of inticement surrounding prize athletes.

Go Bucks!

I got a call one day in the fall of 2004 from my wife's brother, who, like the rest of the family, worked in real estate. In his work he'd come across someone named Hai Waknine, an Israeli businessman (later referred to as a mob figure, mobster or gang member by the Los Angeles Times and various online news sources). My brother-in-law said, Have you ever heard of a guy named Maurice Clarett? and I started laughing because nobody who does what I do within 500 miles of a college football game hadn't heard of Clarett.

After Ohio State won the 2002 national championship, Clarett attempted to declare his eligibility a year earlier than the NFL allows. His decision wasn't so much trying to set a groundbreaking legal precedent as it was a practical one. He'd been suspended by Ohio State for the 2003 season for misconduct, so his choices were to sit out a whole season then play another year as an amateur, or go pro and get paid. It wasn't a tough call.

Clarett won the first round in his legal battle for eligibility, but lost round two in a higher court. Once he lost, and his attorney Alan Milstein reported that he'd hired an agent, he forfeited all his remaining college eligibility.

At that point, he had no choice but to wait for the next draft, which was what he was doing. My brother-in-law said that Hai Waknine was taking care of Clarett who was living at Waknine's house and they were looking for help in representation. Wow.

Just read that excerpt. Crazy.

As others speculated when MoC first got caught with the gun and Grey Goose in his car...who knows where he was heading that night. So glad to hear he's straightened out and made amends with those that he lost touch with. His time served seems to have done him well and I hope for continued success.

I love seeing people turn their lives around in a positive way. Not many People outside of Buckeye Nation know how good MoC was. I was showing a guy a video today of his highlights. He only saw Clarett play in the NC game, which he was not healthy for. The guy was blown away at how quick MoC was. I honestly believe had he stayed 3-4 years, he'd be mentioned with Eddie.
