RB Maurice Clarett (B1G Freshman of the Year, National Champion)

On my death bed, I will remember that play. How many players in the heat of battle would have the presence of mind to tackle the ball, and wrestle it back instead of just trying to stop the ball carrier? Without Mo we don't win that game.
Without Mo we aren't even playing in that game.

beanie has played hurt and put up big numbers against some really good defenses... mo cla had some great numbers, but most were put up against bad defenses... he was a key piece in the championship run, but was bottled up most of the day by miami's d... i'm not saying he couldn't have been one of the greatest, i just think beanie is better

and i had a few beers watchin football yesterday, so i am wondering what i wrote there too :drunks:
We'll never know.

I don't like the:
"beanie has played hurt and put up big numbers against some really good defenses... mo cla had some great numbers, but most were put up against bad defenses..."

MoC was a TRUE freshman.. Beanie was splitting time as a frosh.

When MoC stepped onto the field, the offense played with a different energy. If anyone was at the 2002 M*ch*g*n game, you know what I'm talking about.

Saying Beanie is better because he had bigger numbers is like arguing for the QB that never won the big one but won an MVP.

Beanie is better.. IMO, only because MoC was a dipshit. MoC was the best natural tailback I've ever seen. Granted, I'm college aged.

MoC had "it."

And Pittman runs circles around Ross & Hall. Beanie would have started over those two as well.

The OL doesn't have a similar benefit now?

MoC also brought another kind of energy to this program.

Clarett got OSU to the big one but wasn't very effective in it. Unbelievable play as a defender, but pedestrian day at RB (which is no sleight, that D was ferocious).

I'm not sure it would've mattered if Jim Brown was back there against Miami, there was no where to run. His two touchdown runs were both very good despite how small the hole was he had. Miami had one hell of a defensive line as well and we were playing two true freshman on the offensive line. It felt similar to how Beanie had no place to go against Penn State this year although I felt Miami's defense was more suffocating against the run.

I continue to say that Clarett gets WAY too much credit for that championship season. He played in, what, 6 games that year. Whether it was his shoulder or something else. Great back, but he was a drama queen from the moment he set foot on campus. He was a part of something special but he wasn't the reason it was special.

As far as the actual championship game he made a great play, true. But the defense, in my mind, is the reason that Ohio State won the game. That defense allowed Tressel ball to work exactly the way it's supposed to.

Miami let up 4 100+yd rushers that year

Greg Jones (FSU) - 189
Cedric Houston (Tenn) - 111
Brandon Miree (Pitt) - 118
Walter Reyes (Syr) - 110

no Jim Browns, by my account...

I agree, and I'm not college aged. "Best natural tailback I've ever seen" is an excellent way to describe MoC.

Talent: MoC > Beanie
Production: Beanie > MoC
Character: Beanie > > > MoC
"Winner": MoC > Beanie
Overall: Slight edge to Beanie, based primarily on character and longevity ... but if I needed a tailback for just one game, I'd take MoC.

IMO MoC was a better short yard back, and some may argue this was driven by OL, but he routinely converted every 3rd and short and 4th and short. in addition he punched in like 18 TDs as a freshman.

the last few years I've been disappointed in getting stopped way to often in goal line as well as other short yardage situations.

I know there are other variables in play, but my opinion.
