RB Jaamal Berry (Transfer to Murray State)

Redshirting is suppossed to be for developmental purposes anyway. Runningbacks develop more through gametime, as they often don't need the weight gain etc that other positions due.

Let him loose! Won't hurt to have another horse in the stable keeping everyone fresh and the defense on their toes.

If he isn't a major contributor by his 3rd year, there will be someone recruited who will take those carries anyway.

He is either special or average...one means he will likely leave early anyway and the other means he will be passed up on the depth chart.
Is that argument specific to Berry, or is it applicable to all freshman running backs? Or even to all freshmen? Is the redshirt obsolete?

It's applicable to runningbacks of Berry's skillset in combination with his size. What's a year of development to a 185 pound speed/agility back? Boom, who wanted to be a bruiser, needed his RS year to get bigger (and you can see he still gets knicked up).

Especially with a player as purely talented as Berry. Bottom line is if Tressel wants to play him this late he envisions him getting as many carries as Hall. This is not for a garbage time carry to run out the clock. This is for meaningful minutes/packages they've worked on in the offseason.

Exactly. And if he is average I don't think we are having this conversation. You earn PT. JT doesn't give game reps just because a kid doesn't want to RS.

At the start of the season Berry was mentioned as the first back behind Herron and Saine - without having played in a game. If that is still true of a healthy Berry he is our #1 option until those two are back - not somebody who comes off the bench with Bauserman.

If Saine and Herron are not ready for PSU do we sit our #1 back?

My thinking is you have Martin and Hall coming off of hot weeks and they would suffice against NMSU. A Big 10 title is still possible but how likely is it that we win out? I just don't see it happening with a tough Iowa on the schedule and a night game at PSU. If we play Berry and end up at a Meineke-type Bowl, it's a bad decision imo. I would love to see what Berry can do but I also hate to see a year's eligibility used up on 4 games.

PSU is at 3:30. After the time change it will start getting dark in the second half...but definitely not the "night game " atmosphere that PSU is infamous for. And regardless of the time of day....PSU's offensive line still has to block someone.

With the slate coming up, you want all your weapons at your disposal. If Berry is a go and can help the team, I think you play him. There's still a lot to play for this season.

if he were a true sophomore id agree with you. but being a true freshman? sure, the big 10 title and a trip to the rose bowl are ours to loose. but unless we loose another tb to injury i think we can limp through the rest of the season with the pair minus the spare. with 4 games left in the year and him missing out on practically the entire season largely due to injury... at this stage id feel a lot more comfortable giving him some more time with the offense and the opportunity to bulk up a bit. it would be different if he had been available all year.

Tressel doesn't redshirt running backs with regularity here. Berry is not the type that is going to bulk up here, he's not a Boom type of back. I think that with Saine down we would be missing the speed back with just having Jordan and Jermil.

I've been stating this more than once but there are plays they were working on in the offseason just with Berry. From what I saw through 2 fall practices. Tressel was figuring on him being a big part of the attack during the season.

your certainly right about the redshirting of tb's. though i see him putting on about 10 lbs before next season. i could certainly be wrong there, jmo. my concern with playing him this late in the season isn't so much the timing but the amount of practice he has missed.

wouldn't be the first time jt skipped on a redshirt that i wouldn't have :P.
