RB Jaamal Berry (Transfer to Murray State)

I certainly share some of the enthusiasm for Jamaal, but why is everyone assuming that he will be featured? I thought Boom did plenty to entrench himself as the starter, and I think Jamaal would need to show that he is already a great collegiate running back to take away significant carries from Boom. I think Jamaal will be a great running back eventually, but maybe not just yet. I feel confident that we will get at least a couple years of Boom before Jamaal, Hyde, etc. really get a bulk of the carries.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I disagree. I don't think Boom did anything to really establish himself as a lock for the starting job this year. His best game was against Troy, and he still didn't break 100 yards. I'm not saying he shouldn't be the starter or that he won't earn it, I'm just saying that there should be a competition this year. Boom was great as a backup and I think had some nice runs late in the season. I wouldn't be surprised to see Berry starting by the end of the season, though.

Boom didn't play in four games this year, and when he was in there he showed to be our only other capable back. Boom will be #1 all year, but that doesn't mean Berry or someone else won't sub in. Breaking 100 yards also isn't a yardstick on how effective a runner is by any means.

What boom has shown last year was good vision, good balance, and great toughness for a back his size. Think Mike Hart without being a deusch bag.

Also Hyde, Berry, and Hall are coming in the fall which doesn't do them any favors in catching Herron. If one was coming in early i'd say maybe they'd have a chance, but not with just fall practices'.

He ran well vs usc, he just stopped getting the ball. He ran well in a number of games, and proved he is a steady, smart back who can work with pryor.

Osu doesn't need a franchise back with pryor at qb. They need consistency, and boom provides that.

We have no idea what berry will do at this level.

I agree completely - especially about Boom's vision. With the meaness we'll have from our run blockers nexy year, I think Boom could be in that second level often. Not to mention he was just under 5ypg game as a frosh... thats not bad for any RB not named Beanie.

You know what else is I dont remember him fumbling at all and thats a problem which sometimes plagues (redshirt) freshman RB's.....knock on wood. I agree w jwins, Boom is consistant and shown that he can hit the homerun on occ.

I think how well Berry picks up the pass protection schemes will have a huge impact on how much playing time he gets early on. I think his natural ability is enough to make up for him not getting practice time in the spring, but learning the offense, and especially pass blocking schemes, will be the largest challenge and where he will be the furthest behind Boom and Saine.

His best game wasn't against Troy. He improved as the season went on. He started to hit the hole harder and made some nice cuts. That td run against Texas was a thing of beauty. Can't say he's a lock after what happened to Boeckman last year, but my money is on him to win the starting job and top 1,000 yards.

Well I for one was not insinuating that JB would step into the starring role at tOSU. This is JB's thread for one thing, and I was responding to others comments about his speed decreasing since he is officially a Buckeye :tongue2:
That being said, I agree that Boom definitely deserves the first shot, but if Berry bring things to the table that allow him to see significant time without being the main ball carrier, all the better. JT has definitely shown he has no fear playing a frosh over anyone, including a 17 year gray, red, pink, orange, purple etc. shirt senior

And i would have to think that that helps BIG TIME in recruiting kids who all want to start day one .

Can't we all just get along?

They can BOTH have 1000 yards.

JB thrives on competition. That's one thing I've seen in the guy and heard repeatedly said about him. I think JB may surprise a lot of people. His junior and sophomore years he didn't have the greatest o-line, but he did a lot and created plays out of nothing (those highlight films show it) and that was against some of the fastest players in the country (down here in Miami). You see why I say we should get Lamarcus Joyner, too, who chased Berry down in a playoff game last year. Now you give JB arguably the best offensive line in the nation, watch out.
