Dobbins Retakes Central Role In Buckeye Attack
For three straight games entering the showdown in Lincoln, Ohio State’s offense hung more than 50 points on the scoreboard, and did it without much involvement from its emerging star of a freshman running back.
J.K. Dobbins failed to reach 100 yards rushing against UNLV, Rutgers or Maryland, and didn’t have a reception in any of those games either. Both of those streaks ended early against Nebraska.
Dobbins had an 11-yard catch on the Buckeyes’ opening drive, and then moved himself more than halfway to 100 yards rushing on a single play.
Dobbins took a handoff from J.T. Barrett, zipped through a hole opened by LT Jamarco Jones and then saw open field in front of him. He turned on the jets to outrun Nebraska defenders for a 52-yard touchdown to open the scoring. After the game, Dobbins said when he turns the corner and sees an empty field in front of him, he has only one goal.
“I’ve gotta score. Whenever I see the green, I’ve gotta score,” said Dobbins.
On TV and from the press box, it certainly looked like a Nebraska defender had an angle to stop Dobbins for about a 15-yard gain, but the Buckeye beat him to the sideline and then had nothing but open field to the end zone.
“I saw him the whole time and I knew I was going to have to beat him” said Dobbins. “He was the last person to beat, so I beat him.”
