Former NFL Star Eddie George Encourages Young People to Become Landscape Architects

Four-time Pro-Bowler enjoying success as landscape architecture firm
owner

WASHINGTON, April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Eddie George, the 1995 Heisman
Trophy winner who became a star running back for the Tennessee Titans and
Dallas Cowboys, is relishing his new career as a landscape architect and
owner of The EDGE Group, a successful firm with offices in Columbus, Ohio,
and Nashville, Tennessee. He wants young people to consider landscape
architecture as a great career that combines art with protecting the
environment.

"In 1992, when I came to Ohio State, I really wanted to get something
out of my education, something that I had a passion for beyond football,
preferably doing design work and being creative," says George. "Someone
suggested that I try landscape architecture, so I took a course early that
year and fell in love with it. At its essence, landscape architecture is
about creating memorable places and coming up with creative solutions that
are environmentally responsible and that bring our client's vision to
life."

I can't tell you how nice it is to see these guys have plans for their life after football. Sounds like Eddie is passionate about something outside of football and that's so critical for these guys to have once their playing days are over.

Seems like a class act guy. There's always so much news about the guys who screw up their lives in spite of all that talent. These are the things I like to hear about.

Sidenote...Landscape Architecture major...what? A Heisman winner who had the time to not be a General Studies major? Ha!

Q&A: Ex-Titan Eddie George defines, refines his brand

Ex-Tennessee Titan Eddie George made his mark on the playing fields of the National Football League over nine seasons and pocketed a Heisman Trophy as a star running back at Ohio State before that.

But these days, George is more interested in building a corporate identity to rival other ex-athletes such as professional golfer Jack Nicklaus, ex-pro quarterback Roger Staubach and basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson.

Last week, in an interview with Business Editor Randy McClain, George discussed his goals for a landscaping and graphic design firm he co-founded five years ago, and brainstormed about how to shape what he calls the "Eddie George" brand.

Tell me how the Edge Planning and Landscape Architecture firm got started and how active are you in the company?

In 2000, I went back to school to finish up my landscape architecture degree. ? I was 16 hours short. I didn't want to leave that undone. I had aspirations of doing things business-wise after I finished playing football, and on top of that I was going to be just the first or second athlete at Ohio State to ever go through their landscape architecture program.

So, that's something I wanted as an accomplishment under my belt. A year later ? after getting my degree ? I called my professor, Jim Hiss, who was instrumental in helping me get through the program and asked his advice on starting my own landscape architecture firm. How could I do that?

Given the fact that I hadn't practiced in the profession, I felt like my main focus in starting the company would be to bring relationships that I had already established in the business community to the table. And pair that with expertise of others to create our company.

I would be the business developer and market the firm and make sure we were producing the correct product.
How are you trying to fine-tune the business side of Eddie George?

I am getting a master's in business administration from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University (in Evanston, Ill.). It's an executive MBA program. In fact, I'm going there (this weekend). I'll finish the degree in 2009.

Eddie George Open To The Idea Of Retiring As Titan
By Jonathan Hutton
June 10, 2008

Former Titans running back Eddie George left a lasting impression with coaches, fans and opponents alike, but the 10,000 yard rusher recently said he would like to return to the organization that drafted him in 1996 -- even if it happened to be just 24 hours.

The former franchise running back said he was open to the idea of signing a one-day contract with the organization that still felt like home.

''I would love to retire as a Titan,'' George told WTVF-TV. ''I would be open to signing a one-day contract.''

''They know my number. They know how to get in touch with me. If they would like to make it happen, let?s make it happen.''

''That's up to [Titans Owner] Bud Adams.''

In eight seasons as an Oiler/Titan, George gained 10,009 yards, scored 64 touchdowns and was voted to the Pro Bowl four times. And though he's no longer striving for that extra yard at LP Field, George has agreed to serve as a member of the Fisk University board of trustees. He also is working in landscape architecture, a degree he earned from Ohio State.
