Chip Trayanum’s days at running back might not be over after all.

The Akron native, who played running back at Arizona State for the past two seasons before transferring to Ohio State to play linebacker this offseason, has spent some time at his old position in practice recently following a season-ending injury suffered by second-year running back Evan Pryor.

Ryan Day said Ohio State will likely only use Trayanum at running back in emergency situations, but has been impressed with what he’s seen out of the 5-foot-11, 229-pound athlete on offense.

“We had one day full where Chip came over and did some running back and boy, he's natural. And he's doing a great job at linebacker as well, so he'll be a guy that we can use as rain insurance if we needed him to,” Day said at a press conference Monday. “Just seeing him live and in color, he's a talented running back. Been very impressed with the way he's playing at linebacker as well. But we can also use him in a dual role if needed.”

LB CHIP TRAYANUM
You might not have thought much of Chip Traynaum’s potential to see the field at linebacker this season when he transferred into Ohio State as an Arizona State running back. If you’ve heard his new Buckeye teammates talk about him in the months since, you might think differently. Every Buckeye linebacker interviewed in mid-August agreed that Trayanum is the fastest player in the position group, and each also mentioned him among the strongest player in the room. Teradja Mitchell called Trayanum “one of the most athletic people I’ve seen come through this facility,” and that has aided the Akron native in earning second-team reps in practice this preseason.

If Trayanum’s trajectory continues, he might just become the top backup linebacker on the team as he pursues a role for the Buckeyes in his first season in Columbus.

Day says Ohio State had one day where Chip Trayanum played running back for the Buckeyes given Evan Pryor's injury, and that the Buckeyes could use him in a dual role if needed this season. Day says that's more of an emergency situation, though.

Very happy to see the coaching staff taking returns seriously. Under much of Meyer and Day, they’ve more or less put 2 speedsters in the back.

I’ve long said returner is the most difficult and underrated position in the sport. You have 11 big ass dudes barreling down on you while you stare in the sun tracking the football hoping not to get crushed. Meanwhile, in split seconds you need to decide to return it, secure the catch, reset your vision, decide on an unpredictable running route, and pull out your best 40 yard dash ever. It’s why guys like Ginn are a rarity in the return game. They get credited for the speed, but not the mental mechanics and processing involved.

So, no disrespect, but if some young linebacker is legitimately supplanting JSN and EE (2 of the fastest players in the team), then the coaching staff is looking for more than just a burner. Looking forward to Saturday!

“We're gonna give him an opportunity and see how it goes,” Day said Thursday. “We think that he's shown us enough that he's earned the right to take it back. And I think the guys believe in him. So like anything else, we'll put him back there and then evaluate after the game and kind of see where to go next.”

“We're hoping to get the ball in his hands and see what he can do,” Day said. “I think the guys believe in him. And we're looking forward to seeing if we get one out. We didn't have a chance last week, but maybe we'll see what happens this week.”

“Chip Trayanum might even be better than me,” Egbuka said Wednesday. “He hasn't gotten the chance to return any yet but you guys are going to see Saturday, he's a very special talent. One of the most, if not the most athletic guy on the team. I'm excited to see him return some stuff.”

I think this move tells us a bit about how the staff views the JSN injury and the need to protect Emeka from getting hurt. The risk is too high at moment, to have Emeka get an injury in the return game.

Eh normally I'd agree but Egbuka straight up said it wasn't a load issue and they believe he can house one. So it might be just Traynum is good enough to at least equal Egbuka
