RB DeaMonte “Chip” Trayanum (==> Kentucky ==> Toledo)

I'm sure Chip will do a fine job in EE's absence while currently playing a bigger role in the offense, but damn, Emeka was so close (he actually did) to having the 1st return TD for the Buckeyes in a long time. Didn't he get one called back last year too?

EE is a game-breaker waiting to happen, similiar to the feeling you got seeing TG Jr back there for returns. Got the feeling he could house one at any moment.

I do agree that this is the right thing to do. He is way too valuable right now to maintain this offenses explosiveness until JSN is fully healthy or/if another WR other than MH Jr. steps up (Flemming injury?) to be a reliable dominant threat that CJ can consistently count on.

Waive arm above head. Catch ball.

This is actually a valid point.....I love Day, but throwing Julian Fleming back there to get him more involved was not the best decision. Fleming is also a physical freak but his return skills were poor, and his ability to cleanly catch the ball hurt us multiple times in Emeka's absence. Certainly the drop at Michigan and pinning us inside our 5 yard line was a critical mistake and one he had made the previous week.......so I'm gonna want to see how this plays out.....hope he's great at it though!

So my fear about Chip came to fruition…which sucks. I feel like the staff may over-analyze the data they see (athletic freaks) and just think it’ll work well in return game (Fleming is a freak as well).

I don’t know….I feel like I’m both cases, the staff feels like it’s a way to keep a special talent involved in the game when they otherwise wouldn’t have a defined role as they wait their turn.

But kick-offs are too important to sacrifice turnovers or terrible field position. Thankfully our offense bailed us out immediately….

It was his 2nd game as a returner, and he had one muffed kickoff. He could still be a solid returner. I would’ve rather had Cam Martinez or one of the frosh WRs, but regardless, a muffed kickoff can happen

My only concern is they thought Fleming was a solid option at return man too based on his measurable s (when Emeka was hurt last year) and he was pretty terrible at it (and arguably was one of reasons we lost to Michigan).

I get the same vibe when they discussed Chip as a return man….they were looking at his measurable stats in terms of speed and acceleration in combination with his size…..which is great, kid is a freak athlete clearly. It doesn’t mean you’re a good returner.

They put Chip back there another time after the muff but noticed the had Emeka also go out to just fair catch several returns as well.

I hope Chip gets some more experience and proves me wrong….it was just a concern after seeing what they did with Fleming last year….
