23 carries for 95 yards against what looked like a loaded box is pretty good work. Kept the chains moving when the Bucks needed it, didn't turn it over, and sealed the deal with his TD. Not a great day for the offense, but I thought Herron was a bright spot.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Daniel Herron and Brandon Saine went into the Big Ten opener yesterday against Illinois bracketed as Ohio State's No. 1 tailbacks. The bracket likely will remain today, but in a 24-13 win, one stood above the other.

With the game on the line, quarterback Terrelle Pryor hurting and the offense needing to squeeze out a semblance of a running game in the fourth quarter to run down the clock and perhaps score an extra touchdown, the Buckeyes turned to Herron.

Even though he didn't surpass 100 yards, Herron did rush for 51 of his 95 yards in the fourth, and he scored the clinching touchdown with 1:49 to play on a 6-yard run.

"I was very grateful that the coach was putting the ball in my hands," Herron said. "I just wanted to make the best out of it.

"Our running game hasn't been great so far, but we had to pick it up today. That was a big thing, to get the running game going, especially in the Big Ten. I think we did a little bit better job today, and we're going to continue to get better every week."

For all the talk on here about a desire and need to get Hall and Berry (and perhaps even Hyde) more carries (some of which I've agreed with), I've got to say Boom should get some big props from the fanbase for what he showed when Pryor came up gimpy. When Boom is hitting the first space he sees hard and falling forward, he is a very effective back in a Tressel offense. He has the ability to pick up 4-7 yards in an unassuming manner, and it allows this offense to play ball control and slowly bleed the clock. For all the struggles of the run game, I thought Boom and, to some extent, the OL, came through yesterday when we needed someone to step up. I feel like at times this year Boom has tried too hard to break a big play; he's not that kind of back, though. I hope from here on out he continues to get across the line of scrimmage ASAP and just move the ball slowly and methodically. We are tough to stop when he's doing that effectively.

That was the hardest running ive seen all year by our backs. But it's got to be more consistent. Boom is definitely the number 1 back in my book now. I think Hall and Berry should get some touches over Saine next week, but I think it's dumb to keep talking about it cause obviously that doesn't look like it's going to happen. But in Tressel I trust so there must be reason.

Tressel won't give the youngsters more carries then the senior captain. Tress loves his seniors. I think they just need to use saine in different ways, I think it's obvious he's not a inside runner or a quick runningback who will juke you. Herron could always find running room, even if it was a short gain.

Herron really looked good in Q4. Not great, but just what we need to sustain drives and eat up clock.

I'm just so disappointed that Saine's production has fallen off. After the Marshall game, I thought he had turned the corner. Perhaps he can get it going again.

I wouldn't mind seeing Saine return kicks and let Hall take his spot in the RB rotation.

Boom did look good. Especially when you consider everybody pretty much knew who was going to get the ball.

I don't blame Saine for anything; he's in the wrong position.
If Sanzenbacher were playing tailback, he'd be decent, but I think he would be doing about as well as Saine.

Let's not forget his touchdown receptions.

By the way, as this is Boom's thread, he has nice hands too and looks good catching the ball. And he did a fine job yesterday when the game was on the line.

Boom was the starter yesterday, so I think he is our main back now!!! I hope we get to see a couple of the other backs soon though!!!

Not to mention the good OL blocking on his last td, and a couple of runs before.
