RB Daniel "Boom" Herron (Official Thread)

Bit of a stretch to make this comparison, but Boom is starting to remind me of Walter Payton. Undersized, doesn't have breakaway speed, but he manages to find holes where others woudn't, can shake defenders with subtle moves, and fights for every yard he can get after contact. Has been an afterthought on offense this year, but I don't want to think about what our record would look like without him. Boom and Sanzo have been the most consistent players on the entire team this year. With all the talent OSU puts on the field, Boom grinding it out play after play is what's been winning games. Keep it up, Brother!

Walter Payton is generous but I will completely agree that he has been critical to the success of the offense. I have been complaining about the RBs' reluctance to bounce it outside over the past few seasons. Boom has had a ton of success doing just that. It's a wonderful thing to have a playmaker in the backfield especially in the close ones.

Boom put the offense on his back in the 2nd half. He caught big passes, found openings, trucked guys, really did it all. Glad he is a Buck and glad he didn't get discouraged early in the year.

I felt like Mike Adams and Justin Boren were straight up shitting on dudes today providing good lanes for our backs. We rushed for over 300 yards today folks. Could not be happier about what we got from Boom.

Side note, he's about 175 yards shy of 1000 now. Looks to be very reachable.

Great game by Boom. I don't know what exactly has gotten into him the last few weeks, but I hope it's here to stay. He's absolutely been the difference maker for this team. And to think, most of us were writing him off early in the year. Shows what we all know. LOL!

Way to go Boom!

Herron rushes to new career high
Ohio State tailback gains 190 yards in win

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Running back Daniel Herron was about the only thing going right for an Ohio State offense that otherwise went all wrong in the first half yesterday against Penn State.

But when the Buckeyes finally got going in the second half, Herron was at the core.

The junior running back, who had topped 100 yards only once in his career, flirted with 200 against the Nittany Lions, finishing with 190 on 21 carries, including a touchdown, in a 38-14 win.

He also had an 11-yard catch to convert a third down and keep alive a 96-yard drive on Ohio State's first possession of the second half.

"That was a big play," quarterback Terrelle Pryor said.

A 5-yard touchdown run by Herron completed the drive, cutting Penn State's lead to 14-10.

At the end of the day, OSU coach Jim Tressel said, the 5-foot-10, 202-pound Herron came up big when the Buckeyes needed him.

"Boom - 21 carries for 190 against Penn State, that's pretty good," Tressel said. "As we've talked for quite some time, Boom just has that ability to lift the group. He breaks tackles, and then the other guys come in, (Brandon) Saine breaks them, (Pryor) and so forth. But, you know, Boom is a special player."

As he stepped into the interview room, the first thing Herron sought was a chair. He admitted he was a little tired, but he was smiling.

"It was a dream come true," Herron said. "Thank God for giving me the opportunity, for coach Tressel giving me the opportunity to make this happen. And I couldn't have done it without the offensive line playing a great game and (fullback) Zach Boren."

Herron is becoming Mr. November for OSU

COLUMBUS — The New York Yankees had their Mr. October in Reggie Jackson, and the Ohio State Buckeyes might have found their Mr. November in Daniel “Boom” Herron.

The junior tailback, who had his first career 100 yard rushing game two weeks ago against Minnesota, took ample advantage of his opportunities, rambling for 190 yards on 21 carries in a 38-14 win over Penn State, and extended his streak of scoring at least one touchdown to nine consecutive games.

“Coach (Jim) Tressel said that November is big-time football, and you need to be able to run it,” Herron said. “I’m thankful they gave me the opportunity and thankful that my offensive line did such a great job opening the holes for me.”

I tell you what he is doing differently....instead of stutter stepping and almost coming to a complete stop behind the line of scrimmage (like he did a lot of last year, and earlier this season), he is running with authority and hitting that hole/bouncing it outside without the hesitation he has had in the past.

Something changed the second half of that Wisconsin game. The kid is just flat out "running harder".
