Ohio?s Mr. Football, incoming freshman Brandon Saine of Piqua, is out to challenge Chris Wells and Maurice Wells, Ohio State?s incumbents at running back.

Daniel Herron of Warren Harding has his sights set high as a freshman-runningback-to-be in a crowded Ohio State backfield.
Daniel Herron?s attitude is admirable yet na?ve.
The Warren Harding High School running back was one of 15 football recruits to sign letters of intent with Ohio State yesterday. Herron faces stiff competition for playing time from incumbents Chris Wells and Maurice Wells, assuming he doesn?t transfer, and fellow freshman Brandon Saine of Piqua, Ohio?s Mr. Football.
But Herron is undeterred.

Tribune Chronicle / Dana Sulonen

Warren G. Harding?s Dan Herron, left, Trevis Owens, center, and Chris Anzenvino each sign their National Letter of Intent Wednesday at Warren G. Harding High School.
WARREN ? Before the 2006 season started, Warren G. Harding?s Dan Herron said he was going to become a Buckeye and play for coach Jim Tressel. On Wednesday, it became official.

??I said today, ?It has sinked in.? ?? Herron said of becoming a Buckeye. ??It?s unbelievable. It?s hard to believe I?m a Buckeye now. I?m so excited. I think I did the right thing and everything is great.??

Good read grad... two things stuck out:

1 - It makes me excited to see how excited Boom is to play for the Bucks
2 - I know a lot of schools do what Warren did, but it is pretty neat that they had all their athletes sign at the same time. Pretty classy and the school gets to show how proud they are of all their athletes at once.

After watching that video I like him over Saine to be honest... He Reminds me of Mike Hart perfectly. I love Saines speed and big play capabilities, but I thought Booms' hips and vision are a good bit better than Brandons. Brandon almost seems a bit stiff were as Herron really does a nice job of following blockers, finding seems, and then getting himself through the smaller seems. What a great problem to have though really? I mean do you play Boom or Saine?

REDSHIRT OR NOT: Tressel said the Buckeyes considered using true freshman tailback Daniel ??Boom?? Herron against Northwestern with fellow freshman Brandon Saine out with an injury.

They eventually decided against going with Herron. They like the idea of the former Warren G. Harding High School star having four years of eligibility after this season.

Of course, redshirt decisions often are made on a week-by-week basis.

??We decided to play Marcus Williams rather than take the redshirt off Danny Herron,?? Tressel said. ??But if the moment comes and we need him, we think Danny can be a contributor.??

Herron rushed for nearly 4,000 yards in three seasons as Harding?s featured tailback, from 2004-06.

Herron?s older brother David was a linebacker at Michigan State and is now with the New England Patriots. David Herron was a fullback at Harding and did much of the blocking for former Ohio State tailback Maurice Clarett in high school.

Ohio State notebook
Buckeyes must make room for Boom, just in case

Wednesday, September 26, 2007 3:39 AM
By Tim May

The running backs' ready room at Ohio State must be an interesting place. The leader, sophomore Chris "Beanie" Wells, is dinged but still going. The backup, junior Maurice Wells, is ready as always. Freshman Brandon Saine, who had sprinted into the picture the first three games, is out for at least a second straight week as he recovers from arthroscopic knee surgery to repair torn cartilage.
