RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

Only 28 carries. I've been saying all along and every Buckeye knows the more Beanie gets lathered up, the more the defense pays for it. You have to take the -1's and -4's to get the 50 yarders and the 100+ yard rushing days. The guy needs a ton of carries. At least they are starting to figure it out. Hopefully he can stay healthy enough to start crushing defenses.

Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells is getting tougher
by Bob McManaman on Nov. 28, 2011, under Arizona Republic Sports

Last season or two years ago as a rookie, Beanie Wells probably wouldn?t have returned to the game like he did Sunday, when he grabbed his right knee in pain against the St. Louis Rams.

He got his cleats stuck in the turf during a run, got twisted around and pushed down awkwardly, and it appeared he wasn?t coming back anytime soon.

After all, Wells has been dealing with an undisclosed injury to that same knee for the past month and he hasn?t exactly been compared to Superman when it comes to being invincible to pain.

?That was tough. When he got his knee bent back, it looked horrible,? Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said. ?At that point, I?m sure most of us assumed that was it, that he was done, because he was already fighting the knee.?

But Wells responded when the Cardinals needed him most on what turned out to be a record-setting performance by him.

He not only returned, he ripped off a 53-yard run and finished with a single-game franchise mark of 228 rushing yards in Arizona?s 23-20 victory.

?I?m just excited we got the win and glad we got the ground game going,? he said after the game.

It meant something else to Whisenhunt, who said his third-year running back has reached the maturity level from a physical and mental aspect that an NFL tailback needs to be successful.

?I think it?s a great sign of Beanie?s growth as a player,? he said. ?He?s maturing as an NFL player and understanding what it takes in this league to be consistent as well as dependable.

?He fought through it and came back and had a couple of big runs, so kudos to Beanie. When you talk about trying to get players to understand the mentality of what it takes, it?s great to see a young guy like Beanie make that progress.?

Catching up with Beanie Wells
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on November 30, 2011

Beanie Wells has played through injuries this year to have his best season as a pro by far.

After his monster performance against the Rams, Wells is up to 849 rushing yards with eight touchdowns. Only seven running backs have more rushing yards this year.

Wells talks about his success, Patrick Peterson, and his thoughts about Urban Meyer at Ohio State.

Florio had Wells on PFT Live Tuesday and we wanted to pass it along in the rumor mill before it got too late. Check out the entire show on the PFT

Beanie braces up and other notes

Arizona Cardinals update:

Beanie Wells blamed his failures to score on two long runs in St. Louis last week on the knee brace he started wearing the week before in San Francisco. The brace isn't bulky, but it does restrict movement of his knee, Wells said, so a little bit of speed is lost.

Interesting news nugget this week from Mike Jurecki of XTRA 910 that Wells likely will need surgery after the season. That's not a surprise, even though we know little about his injury. Wells has been dealing with swelling and pain each week. Swelling could mean there are loose particles in the joint or some other kind of damage. Wells wearing a brace could mean there are concerns about stability, which suggests a ligament could be involved.

Soon after Wells suffered the injury, Ken Whisenhunt said the structure of the knee was not damaged. That seems to bolster the idea that Wells has some unattached particles in the joint. That usually doesn't require major surgery, but it's painful and it's telling that he's playing through it.

Wells shatters reputation with franchise record

Since he was punishing defenders at Garfield High School, Beanie Wells knows people have said he?s not tough enough, that he won?t play hurt, that he?s taken himself out of games he could have finished.

On the greatest day of the running back?s three-year NFL career, Wells? Arizona Cardinals teammates turned those knocks into a joke.

Last Sunday in a 23-20 victory over the St. Louis Rams, Wells rushed for a franchise-record 228 yards, breaking LeShon Johnson?s 15-year-old mark of 214 yards against the New Orleans Saints.

Wells did it wearing a bulky support on his right knee that he described as ?sort of an offensive lineman knee brace? after injuring the knee Oct. 23 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was the same knee that required arthroscopic surgery last season to repair a torn meniscus. He?s ?not sure yet? whether it will need another procedure after the season.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt could have run out the clock and let Wells tie the record. But Whisenhunt elected to hand the ball to the powerful former Ohio State star one more time, and Wells bulled his way for 14 yards.

Perhaps Whisenhunt knew Wells had something to atone for as the clock ticked down. He?d lost a fumble in the fourth quarter that enabled the Rams to tie the score. He?d gone down on that play, writhing in agony on the turf at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.

But on the next series, Wells returned like a man possessed, ripping off a 53-yard run on his first carry. Earlier, he?d broken loose for 71 yards, saying he was caught on both only because of the knee injury.

Wells turned in five runs of 10-plus yards after having only 13 in his previous nine games this season. On 27 attempts, he averaged 8.4 yards per carry, best in franchise history (dating back to at least 1960) for a player with at least 25 carries.

It was the second-highest single-game rushing total in the NFL this season, surpassed only by Dallas Cowboys rookie DeMarco Murray, who totaled a franchise-record 253 yards against the Rams, last in the league in run defense.

?It was Michigan week so I had to give a Michigan performance,? Wells said by telephone on Thursday.

Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells gets tough
by Kent Somers - Dec. 6, 2011
The Arizona Republic

Cardinals running back Beanie Wells won't say what's wrong with his right knee, just that it pains him, swells occasionally, and he doesn't like the brace he began wearing three games ago.

Wells is too nice of guy to make you talk to the hand, either. Even if he wanted to, he would extend the right one, because he might be wearing a brace on the left wrist for some undisclosed reason.

"I'm fine," Wells said when asked about it after Sunday's victory over the Cowboys.

That, or some variation of it, has been Wells' standard answer this year when asked about his health.

Wells is not fine, but he's playing. For that, he's being credited for his maturation and toughness.

Gameday Spotlight On ... Beanie Wells, Arizona Cardinals running back
Published: Sunday, December 18, 2011
By Jodie Valade, The Plain Dealer

Another week, another standout running back on the other team.

And another test for the weary Browns run defense, which ranks 31st out of 32 NFL teams in allowing an average of 150.9 yards rushing per game.

This week, it's Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells. The former Akron Garfield and Ohio State star is a burly 6-2, 229 pounds, and he's used his brash style to run for 943 yards in 12 games this season. That's an average of 4.4 yards per carry, and it's helped him to score nine touchdowns for the resurgent Cardinals, who are 6-7.

"He's really a good runner. He's had some outstanding games, as you well know," Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron said last week. "He's a big, powerful runner. We'll be tested."

Wells is coming off a season-low 27 yards last week against San Francisco. But he ran for his season-best 228 yards against St. Louis three games ago. Wells contends that the Browns' defensive line will play a large part in determining which end of that spectrum he falls in today.

"They're big and they've got a couple of young guys in [Phil] Taylor and [Jabaal] Sheard, they're amazing guys," Wells said last week. "They're going to be good football players in this league for a long time."

But Wells, in his third season with Arizona, is proving that he has what it takes to remain in the league, too.

"He's physical, he's strong, he can break tackles, he's got quickness through the hole and when he gets out on the perimeter, I think he can score with it," Browns head coach Pat Shurmur said. "So those are the challenges. Again, it goes back to playing good team defense."
