Since he was punishing defenders at Garfield High School, Beanie Wells knows people have said he?s not tough enough, that he won?t play hurt, that he?s taken himself out of games he could have finished.
On the greatest day of the running back?s three-year NFL career, Wells? Arizona Cardinals teammates turned those knocks into a joke.
Last Sunday in a 23-20 victory over the St. Louis Rams, Wells rushed for a franchise-record 228 yards, breaking LeShon Johnson?s 15-year-old mark of 214 yards against the New Orleans Saints.
Wells did it wearing a bulky support on his right knee that he described as ?sort of an offensive lineman knee brace? after injuring the knee Oct. 23 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was the same knee that required arthroscopic surgery last season to repair a torn meniscus. He?s ?not sure yet? whether it will need another procedure after the season.
Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt could have run out the clock and let Wells tie the record. But Whisenhunt elected to hand the ball to the powerful former Ohio State star one more time, and Wells bulled his way for 14 yards.
Perhaps Whisenhunt knew Wells had something to atone for as the clock ticked down. He?d lost a fumble in the fourth quarter that enabled the Rams to tie the score. He?d gone down on that play, writhing in agony on the turf at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.
But on the next series, Wells returned like a man possessed, ripping off a 53-yard run on his first carry. Earlier, he?d broken loose for 71 yards, saying he was caught on both only because of the knee injury.
Wells turned in five runs of 10-plus yards after having only 13 in his previous nine games this season. On 27 attempts, he averaged 8.4 yards per carry, best in franchise history (dating back to at least 1960) for a player with at least 25 carries.
It was the second-highest single-game rushing total in the NFL this season, surpassed only by Dallas Cowboys rookie DeMarco Murray, who totaled a franchise-record 253 yards against the Rams, last in the league in run defense.
?It was Michigan week so I had to give a Michigan performance,? Wells said by telephone on Thursday.
