RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

Cardinals? Beanie Wells confident in hamstring for Sunday?s game
by Bob McManaman on Sep. 23, 2011, under Arizona Republic Sports

Judging from the way he sprinted out of the Cardinals? locker room on Friday, it?s safe to assume Beanie Wells? hamstring is just fine.

Wells was running late for a live television interview with ESPN on the other side of the team?s practice facility, but he stiffed-armed his way past reporters to easily make it on time.

Will he be able to give it a full go come Sunday when the Cardinals (1-1) play their NFC West Division opener at the Seahawks (0-2)?

?Yeah, definitely,? Wells said after his ESPN spot.

Wells, who has rushed for 183 yards and two touchdowns, left practice early on Thursday with tightness in his hamstring. As soon as it grabbed him, he left the field and went to see the training staff.

?I went to go (ice) bag it down and not let it be one of those things that linger,? Wells said.

Friday, he was limited in practice, but that could just be the Cardinals? way of playing it safe and giving Wells? hamstring an extra day to heal.

Asked about Wells after practice Friday, head coach Ken Whisenhunt didn?t reveal much other than to say: ?Beanie?s doing all right. We?ll see how he progresses and see how he is Sunday.?

Wells has been a pleasant surprise this season. He?s running harder and lower to the ground, and he?s cutting it upfield quicker than in his previous two seasons.

?It?s exciting,? Wells said. ?We?ve had the run game going the last two weeks and I?m excited to build off that.?

Beanie Wells expects to play

Cardinals running back Beanie Wells is listed as questionable for today?s game against the Seahawks and considered a game-time decision. But Wells sounds like he has already decided that he?s playing.

Asked if he?ll be at full speed for the Seahawks game, Wells said, ?Yeah, definitely.?

Wells left Thursday?s practice early after feeling tightness in his hamstring, and on Friday he was limited. But all indications are that the Cardinals were just being careful with Wells, and he can go today.

Wells has carried the load for the Cardinals this season, with 32 carries for 183 yards and two touchdowns. The Cardinals? other two running backs have hardly touched the ball: LaRod Stephens-Howling has three carries for 10 yards, and Chester Taylor has one carry for zero yards.

Brutal. Playing vs a guy who's going for the freaking scoring record today and Beanie's inactive. I really wanted to see him go for 200 vs the Seahawks. They get the Giants next week so it will be much tougher going in that one.

His former teammate (Hightower) didn't seem to have a problem rushing against them.

Arizona Cardinals' Beanie Wells insists it was 'smart' to sit
by Bob McManaman - Sept. 26, 2011
The Arizona Republic

Cardinals running back Beanie Wells - who, fair or not, has been saddled with the oft-injured tag - insisted Monday that it was a "smart" decision to sit out Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks.

The hamstring pull Wells suffered Thursday in practice was enough, he said, to play it safe and not risk losing more time, especially considering the good start he had in the season's first two weeks.

"It was smart," he said. "We didn't want it to linger. We came to an agreement, collectively, and we thought it was just smart to sit this one out. We didn't want it to go weeks and weeks down the line.

"You know how hamstrings are."

A similar injury has sidelined Texans running back Arian Foster for most of the first three weeks. Wells didn't want that to happen to him in this, his potential breakout season as a pro.

"You've got to let it heal," he said Monday, adding that it's nothing like a sprained ankle. "You've got to let that muscle get back feeling right, or else it would be hell getting back."

Coach Ken Whisenhunt was optimistic that Wells would return to practice this week, along with LaRod Stephens-Howling (hand), although Wells added he might have to "ease into it."

Wells did, however, make a prediction Monday about his availability for Sunday's game against the New York Giants at University of Phoenix Stadium.

"I'm 100 percent sure," he said, "that I'm going to play this week."

Arizona Cardinals team report: Beanie Wells status undetermined
Kent Somers Sporting News

TEMPE, Ariz.?RB Beanie Wells remained limited in practice on Wednesday because of a hamstring injury, and coaches are hopeful Wells can increase his workload as the week progresses.

Wells missed last Sunday's game in Seattle with the idea he would avoid aggravating the strain and missing a significant amount of time. But there is no assurance he will play this week.

Thursday's practice will be an important one for him in being able to play on Sunday. If Wells isn't able to take on more work, the chances of him playing obviously diminish.

Chester Taylor started in place of Wells last week, but Alfonso Smith played most of the last three quarters.

It's unknown which one would start on Sunday if Wells can't play, but Smith is likely to get the majority of the work. This is his first NFL action, but he was on the practice squad a year ago and is more comfortable with the offense than Taylor.

BEANIE CONFIDENT, STILL LIMITED

Running back Beanie Wells did more at practice Thursday, even ?opening it up? a little to test his bad left hamstring, but he was still limited. Saying he has never had a hamstring injury before, Wells is expecting to be able to play Sunday.

?It sucks, but it?s a hamstring ? what are you going to do about it,? Wells said. ?I couldn?t have avoided it in any type of way.

?I sat out last week to make sure I?d be safe for this week.?

Whisenhunt said he was ?optimistic? Wells would be able to play.

Whisenhunt 'very optimistic' Beanie Wells, Stephens-Howling will play
By Adam Green/Arizona Sports
Published: September 30, 2011

Just when it seemed like Beanie Wells was ready to be the running back the Cardinals thought he could be he went down with a hamstring injury.

This happened, of course, with LaRod Stephens-Howling already injured and with rookie Ryan Williams out for the season. Needless to say, runners have been in short supply for Arizona.

That could change this weekend when the team hosts the New York Giants in Glendale.

"We'll still work him out before the game," head coach Ken Whisenhunt said of Wells. "I still feel very optimistic that he'll be able to play."

Getting Wells back on the field would help an offense that, to put it lightly, struggled in Seattle. The team clearly missed their workhorse, as replacements Alfonso Smith and Chester Taylor rushed 25 times for just 74 yards.

So yes, getting Wells and his 5.7 yards per carry average back would go a long way towards fixing the offense, as would the return of the electric Stephens-Howling.

"Having Beanie and LaRod back would certainly give us a boost," Whisenhunt said. "Whenever you have talented players to throw into the mix you're excited about that."

Then again, the head coach made sure to temper his excitement. Many expected Wells to play last week, but the decision was made before the game to sit him for the afternoon.

So, until the final decision is made there is no guarantee either player will be active.

"We'll look at it and see, we'll see where we are with that position on Sunday," Whisenhunt said. "That's always a decision on Sunday with the inactives.

Whisenhunt: Beanie will play
Staff report Sporting News

Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells will play Sunday against the New York Giants barring ?something unforeseen happening before the game,? coach Ken Whisenhunt told Sirius/XM on Saturday.

However, Whisenhunt did caution that Wells may not be turned completely loose.

?Now, does that mean he?s going to be able to have 30 carries? We?ll see. That?s what you don?t know,? the Cardinals coach said.

Wells missed Arizona?s loss to Seattle in Week 3 with a hamstring injury.

In two games this season, Wells has rushed for 183 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 5.7 yards per carry.
