Boys Prep of the Week: Naples' Hyde comes through on final play

By NICK KRUEGER (Contact)
12:01 a.m., Tuesday, September 23, 2008

By now, it?s no secret that even with multiple weapons at Bill Kramer?s disposal, the Naples High offense is steadied by one player: Carlos Hyde.
Ohio State figured that out, and after this season the running back will join the Buckeyes backfield. Last week against Cape Coral, the Seahawks knew it too, but they couldn?t do anything about it.
Hyde rumbled for 167 yards, and though he didn?t log a touchdown in the dramatic 36-35 win, he punched in the game-winning two-point conversion with no time left.
While any number of running backs in the area would have loved to finish a game with that stat line, for all of Hyde?s talent, his night was exemplary of the role he plays with the team: Chew up yards, let his teammates help him, and give credit where credit is due.
?The goals I have for this season are to rush for over 1,000 yards and win another state championship,? Hyde said. ?But I can?t do it without my offensive line; they do a great job blocking for me.?
His trust in his offensive front, and the combination of a backfield that also has running back Greg Pratt and quarterback Juno Prudhomm certainly helps. Despite so many playmakers in one backfield, Hyde has no problems keeping his production high, something his head coach attributes to his high football IQ.

Prep football: Naples grinds out road win at Immokalee

By ADAM FISHER (Contact)
10:46 p.m., Friday, September 26, 2008

Hyde finished with a game-high 107 yards on 10 carries. The senior, who is committed to Ohio State, had 102 yards before halftime, as Naples ran for 223 yards in the first half. The Eagles finished with 315 yards rushing.
?The running backs were just coming out powerful,? Hyde said. ?Coach (Bill Kramer) was telling us, ?pound ?em, pound ?em, pound ?em.? One of the runs is going to bust if you keep coming and coming. That?s what we did.?

Aside from the fact that this kid has a cool name, he and Jaamal Berry should form one serious tandem in the back field. Imagine a triple option out of the shotgun with Berry on the left and Hyde on the right with Pryor in the middle? Opposing defenses are cringing at the thought.

Hyde had three touchdowns of 46 yards, 57 yards and 1 yard.

Prep football: Nuredini kicks Naples past Sharks in second OT

Facing a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line in the first overtime, Naples decided to go for the touchdown. Gulf Coast had yet to go on offense, and stopping the Eagles would have meant a short field goal would have won the game.
Instead, Naples handed off to their 6-foot-1, 230-pound truck of a fullback Carlos Hyde, and Hyde rumbled in for the touchdown.

Recruiting watch: Carlos Hyde
Power back fits mold of Beanie Wells
Saturday, October 4, 2008 3:06 AM
By Tim May

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Carlos Hyde has never met Chris "Beanie" Wells, but he's heard a lot about him.
And a lot of that talk came from Ohio State coaches the past summer as they convinced Hyde -- a power back with pop from Naples, Fla. -- to commit to the Buckeyes' 2009 recruiting class.
"They said that I remind them of Beanie a lot in how I run, and in my body build," the 6-foot, 225-pound Hyde said.
His take?
"I see some resemblance," Hyde said. "I'm a big, power guy, and he's a big, power guy with speed. I also have some speed."

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Prep football: Naples sets school record in 91-0 win over Estero

NAPLES ? A heavy underdog against a heavyweight.
From the start it was a mismatch.
By the end it was numbing.
Naples chalked up 70 points in the first half on its way to a punishing 91-0 win against Estero in a District 3A-14 game Friday night at Staver Field.
The Golden Eagles set a team record for most points scored in a game. Jordan Bates? second touchdown of the game ? an 80-yard gallop in the fourth quarter ? eclipsed the previous mark set in an 85-0 win against Lely in 2001.

Estero coach Rich Dombroski, whose club lost its 18th straight and fell to 0-6, did not want to discuss the game.
?Talk to Bill. He scored 91 points,? Dombroski told reporters.

It was also a brief night for senior Carlos Hyde (74 yards on four carries), who not only rushed for one score and caught another, but also delivered perhaps the game?s hardest hit when he clocked Estero punter Blaine Moriarty on Mark Pearson?s 55-yard punt return for a TD in the second quarter.

Naples ran only 31 plays and kept most of their best players on the bench for almost the whole game. Do the math: 13 TDs on 31 plays...that's less than 3 plays per TD. What was Naples supposed to do, take a knee on each play for the entire second half?

Mr. Hyde looks like he could be someone that the Buckeyes have needed for several years now.

1. a fullback that can consistantly bust through the line (on 3rd and 1) and pick up a first down and/or punch the ball into the end zone from the 2 or the 3.

and

2. an upback in the I formation that can consistantly level a linebacker on a running play or blitzing linebacker on a pass play.

We have a guy like that already, named Beanie. Problem is, when the OL decides to take a play off, not matter how tough you are you're going to get swamped.

I'm banking on the O-Line completely changing for the better with the new blood coming in next year and the questionable play from the O-Line (Person, Rehring, captain Boone) graduating. I think we'll see a Cordle-led O-line at this point next year playing much better than Boone's bunch playing right now. And for a lack of what else to say, they better be playing better a year from now.

But back on topic, all this talk about Carlos made me re-watch his [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwF2mO_Sofo"]youtube highlight video[/ame]. If I had any doubt, I don't anymore. Carlos is a HB all the way at the next level and I can NOT wait to see some video of him from his senior season. I don't think I've seen a back with better balance than Carlos. He just has an uncanny ability to stay on his feet and keep trucking. Just when you think he's finally going to go down, he finds his balance again (sometimes even using a spin move to find his center of gravity AND break a tackle), keeps his legs pumping, and tries his best to stay in bounds. Stylistically, I think he runs more like Keith Byers than Beanie, but one thing's for sure... he runs like a Buckeye.
