RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

Looks like he might be a good replacement for the 3rd down back that left for the Browns.

the Packers drafted Alex Green out of Hawaii in the 3rd round to fill that role I believe....he DNP due to injury so that was probably the reason for Saine getting so much play, probably a huge uphill climb for him to make the roster with Grant/Starks/Green/Kuhn ahead of him

Saw B Saine getting an O H I O picture after the game with AJ Hawk, Ryan Picket, and Robo. Pretty cool.

Back in his home state, the undrafted rookie Saine from Ohio State ran for 35 yards on 10 carries and also caught three passes for 19 yards. He's a long shot to make the roster in this crowded backfield. Saine realizes shining in this role could help his cause. On-the-fly smarts are key and he did score a 29 on the Wonderlic, best among running backs this year at the combine.

"During my senior year, I kind of evolved into that type of running back," Saine said. "Being in pass protection and getting out in space."

Saine says pass protection - above all else - is what Green Bay coaches value in their running backs. Not elusiveness in the open field. Not lowering the kaboom between the tackles. Here in Green Bay, where Aaron Rodgers is the Super Bowl MVP, the top priority of the running back is no secret.

Whoever does it best will play.

"If you can't protect your quarterback," Saine said. "you're not going to play."

First impression: Running back Brandon Saine, a rookie free agent from Ohio State, led the Packers in Cleveland with 35 yards rushing in 10 carries. He took the field late in the first half and then played the entire second half.

"Brandon did a nice job of running hard," running backs coach Jerry Fontenot said. "He was carrying piles. He was driving his knees. He was accelerating his feet on contact. He made some guys miss on the screen (pass). He's not afraid to stick his nose in there and pass protect.

"Overall, he did a really nice job."

Running Backs: The Packers look to have two starters in Grant and Starks. I have stated through my training camp observations that I feel Starks will be the guy this season. Since all of Grant?s money is guaranteed, he should be a lock to make the team. Alex Green was drafted to replace the void left by Brandon Jackson and has flashed ability in camp. The other two backs, Dimitri Nance and Brandon Saine, should be considered long shots to make the team. Saine should be a safe bet to find a spot on the practice squad since he has been productive throughout camp when he has gotten the chance.

I was actually impressed with Saine in the little I saw from him. Losing Green hurts, and I'm not sure Saine will get a lot of time with Grant and Starks ahead of him, but hopefully he gets a chance to show what he's got.

As a Packers fan I was saddened to see Green go down as I am very excited about his potential. Now on the other hand I am extremely excited to see Saine get a chance in the League but like Bucky referenced above GB doesnt run that much anyways and having Grant and Starks in front of him wont make it easy. Good luck Brandon and Go Packers!

I would say Saine might be a better receiver than Starks or Grant..so he may see the field and we know if your open Rogers will find you..hes always throwing to 7-9 receivers a game..
Definitely moreso than Grant, who's a north-south guy. Starks has shown to be adequate in the receiving game, but I think they envisioned Green as a screen guy. It's possible Saine could fill that role.
