Despite nagging injury, Saine sets sights on healthy year

Brandon Saine is making sure he?s not ?getting caught up in the moment.?
?[It?s important to] go back and watch the film, and there are always things you can improve on,? Saine said.
This is what is driving Saine to have a breakout season after injuries slowed his performance last year. Saine?s top priority this season is to avoid major injury, though he has been battling a hamstring injury during spring practices.
?At any time, someone can go down,? Saine said. ?With so many hits and so many carries and you?re in so many plays, all it takes is one and the next guy has to be ready. You have to be ready at all times.?
Saine thrives off of competition. With a lot of depth this season at tailback, Saine says it helps the guys push each other harder and not slip up.
?It?s a great thing, definitely makes us a lot better,? Saine said. ?The younger guys are getting better and they?re pushing us older guys to get better too.?
RB Brandon Saine: No. 3 (6-0, 215)
Possesses a good combination of size and speed for the position. Runs hard and can quickly get into the second level and press daylight. Likes to finish runs and can be tough to bring down once he builds up a full head of steam. However, isn?t real fluid in the hips, runs tight and upright and is consistently forced to gear down in order to change directions. Isn?t real sudden laterally and lacks a great feel running between the tackles. However, he will pluck the football out of the backfield and looks natural adjusting to throws and coming down with the catch when asked to run by defenders vertically.
Impression: A nice size/speed guy who can catch the football, but is going to have a tough time making an NFL roster.
Ohio State senior tailback Brandon Saine is the Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk of the 2010 Buckeyes. Just like both of those great backs, Saine can do his damage on the ground with his feet or in the air with his hands. And, like Craig and Faulk, he does it with very little fanfare.
Saine, who finished second on the team in rushing last season (behind Pryor) with 739 yards (5.1 avg.) and four touchdowns, hopes that his senior year at Ohio State culminates in a Buckeyes rushing title.
"Yeah, that's a big goal for me," Saine said on Thursday, about leading the Buckeyes in rushing this season. "It would be nice, I'm not going to say that I don't want to do it."
Of course running the football isn't the only thing Saine will bring to the table. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound runner also finished third on the team last season with 17 receptions for 224 yards and two scores. In the Rose Bowl, Saine displayed his multiple talents to the entire country, recording 109 yards of offense and a touchdown reception on the Buckeyes opening drive of the game.
Senior Spotlight - Saine

As Brandon Saine heads into his senior year, he is excited for where the season will take him and the rest of his teammates.
In the 2009 season, Saine finished the year with 739 rushing yards, four touchdowns and listed on the second team all-Big Ten. Overall, Saine has a career total of seven touchdowns and 1,071 rushing yards.
This running back has seen a lot of progress from both the offense and fellow teammate, Terrelle Pryor. ?Towards the end of the year last year, we got the passing game going. I think that Terrelle is definitely ready for the season and I am excited for it all? said Saine.
With the passing game getting stronger, Saine is confident in the young Buckeye offensive players, ?There are a lot of young guys who are ready to step up and ready to get out in the open spaces.?
?No matter what happens, it?s going to be fun. We have a lot of options this year and the coaches really know what they are doing.?
Buckeyes Name Six Captains for 2010 Season
...
"I was surprised to hear my name called," said Saine, a tailback from Piqua High in Piqua, Ohio, who has rushed for 1,071 career yards as a Buckeye. "I just want to lead by example and try to do things right."

Piqua's Saine grows into role as OSU captain
By Tom Archdeacon, Staf Writer
Monday, August 30, 2010
COLUMBUS ? As far as his Piqua days preparing him to be one of the new Ohio State football captains, he?s one for two.
?I was never the captain of my high school team,? said Brandon Saine, who rushed for over 3,200 yards and 48 touchdowns in his final two seasons at Piqua High and, in 2006, was named Ohio?s Mr. Football, an honor trumpeted on a big sign along County Road 25A on the edge of town.
?I don?t remember how the captain?s job shook out in high school. I know we didn?t vote. But I wasn?t very vocal and maybe other guys just stepped up and assumed that role. I tried to lead by example, but I never went out on the field for the coin toss or anything like that.?
And yet, if you were around him Monday, Aug. 30, you saw there is something the senior tailback got from his hometown that he?s already putting to use in his new job.
It was his new pin-striped gray suit ? accented with a purple and gray tie ? that he wore to the season-opening media luncheon, where he, the other captains and coach Jim Tressel held court three days before meeting Marshall.
?My grandma (Debbie Chaney) got me this suit for my birthday,? Saine said proudly. ?She got it in Piqua and this is the first time I ever wore it. The one I?d been wearing was from high school.?
While he certainly looked the part Monday, more importantly, his teammates believe he has earned the honor.
?I was a little surprised they chose me,? he said. ?I?m not much of an inspiration-through-words type of guy, but I think you can lead by example, too. And with us having six captains (something the Bucks have had only once in their 121 years of football) I think different guys can look up to different captains. We all have something different to offer.?

Sometimes in life if you just keep working at something and not think about the magnitude of it, eventually you will be noticed. Evidently his peers noticed him and now he's one of the leaders of the Buckeyes, regardless if he considers himself one or not.
Saine shows off speed on long runs

COLUMBUS ? Brandon Saine was showing his heart:
?This is an amazing time in my life right now,? the Ohio State senior from Piqua High School said with some quiet reflection the other day. ?I realize this is my last go-around here, so I want to make it as fun and meaningful as I can ... every game I play.?
