RB Archie Griffin (All B1G, All-American, 1974 & 1975 Heisman Trophy Winner, CFB HOF)

ARCHIE IS READY. ARE YOU? For almost 50 years, Ohio State legend Archie Griffin has been college football's only two-time Heisman Trophy winner. In a recent interview with the Worldwide Leader in Sports, he told ESPN's Ryan McGee that he's started to feel some loneliness at the top of the mountain.

"I don't have to be the only two-time winner and I don't really want to be," the 69-year-old Griffin said. "I was the first. That's plenty enough of an honor for me. I can't wait to welcome the second. ... But I've been waiting for a long time, haven't I?"

From McGee's article:
Griffin, who stood at the front of the room at Downtown Athletic Club in 1974 and 1975, is and has long been, the living, smiling, complete opposite of that awards show scenario. He still returns to New York every December. And he still makes sure to shake the hand of every fellow Heisman Trophy winner in attendance, especially the person who has just become the newest designee as "the outstanding college football player in the United States..."
"In 1978, three years after I won it for the second time, I shook the hand of Billy Sims, who has become a dear friend," Griffin said. "I thought, 'Well, he's a junior just like I was and he has a great team coming back at Oklahoma just like I did at Ohio State, so he will definitely be back here winning this again next year!' But he didn't. And there have been so many guys that I was so excited thinking about them maybe getting to experience that thrill a second time, especially now, when so many amazing young talented underclassmen win it. It's crazy to think about, really."
Yet, here we are. It would take a miraculous turn for (Caleb) Williams to repeat. Since Jason White finished behind Matt Leinart, this century alone, those who have returned to college for another shot at bronzed glory have gone 0-for-10, eight who went 0-for-1 and Tebow, who went 0-for-2.
Pressure, temptation, unreasonable expectations., injuries, "Their team was too good," "Their team wasn't good enough" and voter fatigue are reasons McGee used to explain how returning Heisman winners are seemingly unable to win the award for the second time.

Those are all very real reasons, too. Name a player that has returned for another season after winning a Heisman. The explanation for why they didn't probably land in one of those categories.

Still, someday someone will win a second Heisman. It's inevitable — at least it should be. And when that person wins it, Griffin will not be frustrated or upset. He will be thankful to have another man next to him on the mountaintop.

"Yes, one day someone will do it. At least I think so," Griffin said, chuckling. "I just hope that when it does, I am still here to congratulate them in person."

He's ready. Are you?

Rendering of Archie Griffin statue at the Rose Bowl Stadium, to be publicly dedicated in mid-August 2024.

Griffin’s statue – which will be the first Archie Griffin statue established anywhere in America – will be the fifth on the Rose Bowl Stadium property and will accompany statues for Jackie Robinson (2017), the 1999 Team USA FIFA Women’s World Cup champions (2019), broadcaster Keith Jackson (2019) and former UCLA head coach Terry Donahue (2023). In addition to its appearance in Pasadena, a full-size replica of the statue will be gifted to Ohio State to be placed in Columbus.

“On behalf of The Ohio State University and the Department of Athletics, I wish to extend our most sincere thanks and gratitude to the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation for this wonderful honor of memorializing our all-time great, Archie Griffin, with a statue at the Rose Bowl Stadium,” Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said. “Knowing Archie, he would want a statue for all the Heisman Trophy winners along the Legacy Walk. His accomplishments on and off the playing field are truly legendary and still one-of-a-kind 50 years later, and we are so proud and grateful that he is a Buckeye.”

50 years later, still the nation's only

2x Heisman Winner

Archie Griffin, the beloved and legendary Buckeye whose post-career contributions include those to his alma mater, his community and a scholarship fund in his name that benefits Ohio State sports programs, will be honored throughout the 2024 season by The Ohio State University on this, the 50th anniversary of his winning the 1974 Heisman Trophy.

Fifty-years ago, the fall of 1974 to be exact, Griffin won the Heisman Trophy as the nation’s most outstanding college football player. Griffin, from Columbus and Eastmoor High School, was only a junior, yet he was called at the time by legendary coach Woody Hayes “the greatest football player I have ever coached.”

Success for Griffin at Ohio State didn’t take long. He rushed for an Ohio State single-game record 239 yards against North Carolina in the second game of his freshman season (1972), and the following season he became the first Ohio State sophomore to rush for more than 1,000 yards during an All-American season.

As a junior, Griffin rushed for a school-record 1,695 yards and helped lead Ohio State to a third of what would become a conference-record six consecutive Big Ten championships. In addition to winning the Heisman Trophy, he was also honored as a unanimous All-American, the Big Ten
Silver Football award winner and the UPI and Walter Camp Player of the Year.

Griffin would go on to achieve legendary status in the world of college football as an Ohio State senior in 1975. That’s because little did anyone know at the time, but the 1974 Heisman Trophy would only be Griffin’s first Heisman Trophy.

Griffin would go on to achieve even greater success, including being named a Top 5 player in college football history, status as the Rose Bowl’s “All Century Player” and national recognition for representing the highest standards of excellence, integrity, and sportsmanship.

A little under 52 years ago, Ohio State kicked off the 1972 football season against Iowa. The Buckeyes shut out the Hawkeyes 21-0 at home in a game that featured only one forward passing play all afternoon. On the final series with the result in no doubt, Woody opted to put the reserve offensive players in to give them some experience. An 18-year-old Archie Griffin took the field for the first time in an Ohio State uniform weeks before he would even attend his first class on campus.

Griffin did not receive any carries in what technically served as his Buckeye debut. However, according to the play-by-play from Ohio State's University Archives, backup quarterback Dave Purdy received credit for a fumble on a pitch attempt that otherwise would have served as Griffin's first rushing attempt as a Buckeye. The play lost five yards, but Purdy stayed in the game because Woody seemed to attribute the cause of the fumble to a mistake made by Griffin.

Woody further punished the blunder by demoting Griffin to fifth string ahead of Ohio State's next game against North Carolina. An account from Sports Radio 97.1 The Fan's football commentator Jack Park to NCAA.com notes that Griffin did not make the usual Friday night off-campus hotel trip normally performed by the first three units at each position, cementing his residency in Woody's turnover doghouse. Park also recalled that Griffin, "wondered if he would ever see the ball again in his career" in wake of the fumble, given the ire Woody held for such gaffes.

Just sayin': NO, I honestly don't remember that. However I do remember the second game in 1972 Archie ran for 239 yards against North Carolina and after the game they asked the NC coach why he hadn't prepared a better defense to stop Griffin. His replay was something like "****", I didn't even know he was on the Ohio State team".

Per an Ohio State spokesperson, the street sign is a permanent honorary designation for the legendary Buckeye running back. The official address of the street, however, will remain Tuttle Park Place.
