RB Antonio Williams (transfer to North Carolina)

I think it was smart for Urban & Alford to let him eat a little bit and get a couple touchdowns.
Totally agree with his getting the touchdowns instead of Dobbins (who sort of laughed it off on the sidelines). He may not get the PT and carries he wants, but if gets a TD or 2 every other game or so, it should keep him quite motivated.

Antonio actually looked pretty good, even though he was fresh against a worn down defense for most of his carries, but he does seem to be the ideal goaline back, he is also a lot mere elusive than I thought he would be, he may have a similar journey to that of Carlos "El Guapo" Hyde....
it's kind of nice to have a third-stringer who was offered by bama, clemson, auburn, florida, georgia, notre dame, and penn state, eh?

ANTONIO WILLIAMS, FOCUSED ON IMPROVING AND BEING A LEADER, BELIEVES HIS OPPORTUNITY WILL COME AT OHIO STATE

92370_h.jpg

With J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber firmly established as Ohio State’s top two running backs, it’s uncertain how many opportunities for playing time will be available for Antonio Williams this season.

As Dobbins will still be at Ohio State for at least the next two seasons, and a bevy of talented running backs continued to be recruited to Columbus, the clock is ticking for Williams to get his shot at becoming Ohio State’s next great running back.

But even though he enters his junior season as the Buckeyes’ likely third-string running back, with only 63 carries to his name through his first two seasons at Ohio State, Williams remains confident that his time to shine will come in Columbus.

"I think the carries will come. I really do," Williams said Monday. "I think it will definitely come. When it does, I’ll take advantage of it and do what I can do."

Williams’ third-string standing on the depth chart isn’t a reflection on his talent or effort, at least not this spring, but simply a product of the talent in front of him on the depth chart. Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer and running backs coach Tony Alford have both lauded Williams for his progress this spring, saying that they have seen a change of demeanor in the third-year back from New London, North Carolina.

"He’s a professional about how he handles his business," Alford said. "An extremely, extremely mature kid. He has improved. Probably, in my estimation, probably one of the top three guys on the team as far as improvement. That’s coming from me. Obviously I’m a little biased probably (as the running backs coach). But he’s had a great spring, a great attitude."

Buckeye Running Back Antonio Williams Ready for More

Antonio-Williams.jpg

Sitting behind two 1,000-yard rushers during his first two seasons, redshirt sophomore running back Antonio Williams’ path to prominence at Ohio State has not been the one he had imagined. Currently a third-string running back for the Buckeyes, the future of Williams’ playing time and touches this season still remains a mystery, especially after two years of being buried on the depth chart.

But no matter the path he now takes or what his current role on the team might be, Williams remains confident that his time to shine for the Buckeyes will come, and so will the carries.

“We talk about the brotherhood here, and the brotherhood is understanding who you are and what you are for this team,” Williams said. “And understanding that maybe I didn’t play as much so far, you have to sacrifice yourself a little bit, and that’s part of being a Buckeye. That’s what it is, and I did that. I’ve done that and I’ll continue to do that if I need to. But eventually, I think it’s going to work out for me.”

As a football player and as a competitor, this path has been frustrating for Williams. But at the same time, he knows that he has a role on this team. Rather than focusing on his number of carries, he has made strides to improve his game and emerge as a leader in the running back room.

“Things like speed and conditioning and strength levels, he’s becoming a much, much better football player. It’s great to see,” running backs coach Tony Alford said. “He’s one of the leaders in my room. He’s a great leader. Does a great job in recruiting. Just overall, he understands the culture of this program and what we’re trying to do. He’s doing a good job and I’m proud of him.”

With a goal to play in the NFL one day, Williams has worked hard and has remained focused on taking advantage of every opportunity given to him at Ohio State. He has also taken the strides to improve all aspects of his play by cutting 17 pounds since he arrived at OSU, and has continued to gain more confidence in himself each year.

“My previous two years I was more of a power guy and a lot of people knew that,” Williams said. “But I’ve lost weight every year and right now I’m moving pretty good, so I’d say I’m definitely more balanced, a lot more balanced this year and I’ve got a lot more speed.”

The rising-junior began to see playing time, as the backup to the dual starters Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins. As a sophomore for the Buckeyes, Williams rushed for 290 yards and three touchdowns. He also had five receptions for 25 yards.

However, with both Weber and Dobbins back for 2018, and with true-freshman Master Teague showing his skills in the spring game, apparently Williams felt that it was in his best interest to continue his collegiate career elsewhere.

Williams is a New London, N.C. native, so he will be returning home to continue his career. In his transfer announcement he thanks coaches Urban Meyer and Tony Alford for giving him the opportunity to play at Ohio State and for their guidance over the years.

After he sits out the 2018 season, Williams will have two years of eligibility remaining.
