FOXBOROUGH, MASS. ? Antonio Pittman says he always prepares as if he's starting. And that's a good thing. Because when he walked into the visitors' locker room Sunday following pregame warmup, Pittman saw Pro Bowl running back Steven Jackson icing his injured right thigh muscle.

"About that time, I knew I was ready to go," Pittman said.

Jackson tested the leg a couple of hours before kickoff, but it didn't feel right.

Pittman steps up with Jackson sidelined

He rushed for 83 yards on 19 carries

News-Democrat

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- With Steven Jackson inactive due to a thigh injury, Antonio Pittman had to carry the load in the running game for the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.
Pittman had 19 carries for 83 yards in the Rams' 23-16 loss to the New England Patriots.
"Filling in for Jack, that's big shoes to fill," Pittman said. "I have to let the team know that even though Jack wasn't in there, the level of competition won't fall off."

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ? In a gritty comeback from a hamstring injury suffered last week against Arizona, Antonio Pittman was the surprise starter at running back Sunday for the Rams.

Pittman's totals were modest in the Rams' 47-3 loss to the New York Jets. He gained 28 yards on 13 carries against the Jets' fourth-ranked run defense. He also caught two passes for a team-high 38 yards. But his determination earned the respect of coach Jim Haslett.

"I thought he ran hard," Haslett said. "He did hold on to the football. The reason he started was he practiced Friday, he felt good Saturday. And we felt he deserved the opportunity to start based off what he did the last couple weeks."

95 yards on 14 carries for Antonio. If the Rams had not been down by 30+ points most of the game, he would've had 100.

Still a very good game for him. Too bad his team is awful. :(

True, but normally, players begin to complain and hate losing. He's having the time of his life. Of course he wants to win, but he's so happy doing what he's always wanted to do since we were kids, after the game, you'd never know if they won or lost.

Yea, that awful team beat my Cowboys. Who are also awful.

Back on track, good game Antonio! Hopefully you'll get your shot, sooner rather then later.

Backups step to forefront

SAN FRANCISCO ? For Antonio Pittman, it was trying to meet a coach's challenge. For Kenneth Darby, it was trying to prove that his fingers aren't really so slippery.

For the Rams, it was trying to cobble together a representative backfield performance with Steven Jackson sidelined for the third time in a month with a strained thigh muscle.

Those goals generally were achieved Sunday. But the ultimate goal ? a victory over NFC West rival San Francisco ? proved to be far more elusive. The 49ers rolled up a commanding halftime lead and cruised to a 35-16 win in front of 67,573 at Candlestick Park.

Pittman, who started his fourth game in a row at running back, acknowledged that he's "enjoying it a lot." But he added firmly:

A quote from Pittman at the end of the article stuck with me. Pitt is trying hard and wants to do what it takes to win:

"I take full blame," he said. "When we got into those situations on the goal line, we have to punch it in. I didn't play my part in that role."

Apparently, it also stuck with some Ram's fans too as they commented on the article:

johnsonsinutah November 17, 2008 12:04PM CST Interesting it's a "backup" that steps up and "takes full responsibility" for not scoring a touchdown, too bad our "stars" don't have that level of integrity.

scottwichern November 17, 2008 1:31PM CST Give Jackson his money back. Pittman runs twice as hard as Jackson for a considerably smaller price tag.

Tough day last week.........

But not everybody involved is embarrassed.
?I am not embarrassed at all,? running back Antonio Pittman said. ?That is how I am; I?m a guy that goes out there and gives it my all. I don?t think we should be embarrassed about anything. I think we need to go out as a team and get it together.?
After rushing nine times for eight yards and catching three passes for 11 yards, Pittman may not be embarrassed by his effort on Sunday.
He should be embarrassed to get paid for it.

Rams fine Pittman $25,000
By R.B. FALLSTROM

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson got his heaviest workload of the season on Sunday, partly because his backup was being punished.

Coach Jim Haslett said Monday that Antonio Pittman was fined $25,000 after skipping practice Saturday. Pittman, whose 23rd birthday was Friday night, also was inactive for Sunday's 17-16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Pittman has made five starts while Jackson was sidelined by a thigh injury, and has 283 yards with a 3.7-yard average. Jackson had 108 yards on 32 carries, his first 100-yard game since Game 6, despite spending time on the training table at the end of the first half with a sore hamstring.
