Pittman was stunned when the draft came and went without his name being called.

Running back Steven Jackson's holdout is entering its fourth week. But the Rams did get very strong running from backups Antonio Pittman and Brian Leonard.
Pittman carried nine times for 67 yards in the first half, including a long run of 18 yards. Brian Leonard added 38 yards in eight carries, including a long of 10 yards, before suffering a strained left shoulder that ended his night. The Rams finished with 183 yards rushing, averaging 4.8 yards per carry.
Throw in quarterback Marc Bulger's 14-yard scramble and the Rams piled up 119 yards rushing in the first two quarters, averaging 6.6 yards per carry.
Antonio Pittman, signed by the Rams last season after the Saints drafted him in the fourth round and then released him in their final roster cuts, gained 67 yards on nine carries last week as the stand-in feature back.
"I would approach it the same way if he was here," Pittman said. "I'm trying to compete and get better every day. Competition pushes us all and you can't look too far ahead. If you do, you might not be here."

ST. LOUIS ? Nothing has ever seemed to come easy for Antonio Pittman.
Sure, he rushed for 3,677 yards and 50 touchdowns in two seasons at Buchtel High School (one of which he spent playing with turf toe), but he had to share the spotlight with dual-threat quarterback Steven Walker.
Sure, he was only the fourth running back in Ohio State University (OSU) history to rush for 1,000 yards as a sophomore and fifth to record back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, but he had to share the spotlight with numerous teammates while constantly looking over his shoulder at Garfield High School alum Chris Wells.
So given his history, it wasn?t surprising to see Pittman drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL draft and quickly come across his first professional road bump ? released a little more than four months later after failing to beat out undrafted free agent Pierre Thomas for the team?s final spot at running back.
Not that Pittman?s complaining, though. About 24 hours after his release, he was signed by the St. Louis Rams and eventually emerged as the team?s third running back.
About a year later, he sits at No. 1.
Pittman is currently first on the Rams depth chart at his position, splitting first-team reps with second-year fullback Brian Leonard while star Steven Jackson sits mired in a contract spat with the team. If Jackson?s lengthy holdout continues into the regular season, and Pittman continues to produce in preseason games ? in two games, he has 88 yards and one touchdown in 15 carries ? he?ll officially complete the transition from Saints afterthought to Rams starter.
As for Thomas, he isn?t even listed on the Saints depth chart at his position, though he is the team?s primary kickoff return specialist.
?I?m extremely happy,? Pittman said regarding his current situation with the Rams. ?[What happens] is not in your hands. You got to roll with the punches. It?s all about how you approach it. This is a long journey. You have to pace yourself.?

With Steven Jackson AWOL and Brian Leonard sidelined since Saturday because of a sore shoulder, Antonio Pittman reigned as the Rams' unquestioned No. 1 running back.
For all of four days.
Jackson ended his 27-day holdout, signed a new contract and was back on the field Thursday at Rams Park. Jackson won't play in Saturday's preseason game vs. Baltimore, so Pittman still is practicing with the first team. But that job ultimately will be Jackson's.
"It's good that he's back," Pittman said. "Now that he's here, we can get the ball rolling and add some more fire to the offense."
Pittman was the team's top rusher in the first two preseason games, picking up 88 yards on 15 carries ? a 5.9-yard average. Leonard, who probably won't suit up Saturday, had 59 yards on 16 tries, and Travis Minor 50 yards on 13 attempts.
All benefited from the extra work, Pittman noted.
"Every one of the running backs gave the coaches a better look at what we all can do," he said. "The opportunity was good for us."
