RB Antonio Pittman (Official Thread)

But... New Orleans? They've already got Deuce and RB. How much of a chance is he really going to have for playtime there?

You have to wonder how long the Saints can keep Bush and McAllister happy. Pittman would seem to add insurance. I have to wonder just how much longer McAllister can last anyway. I think the life expectancy for RBs in the NFL is slightly shorter than that of platoon leaders in combat.

Good luck, Antonio, You take two of my favorite memories with you, stepping into the end zone in Ann Arbor and leaving Michigan with less than a minute and taking Notre Dame out of the game on a 60 yard sweep.

Gil Brandt's instant analysis

Gil Brandt's Analysis This was the best player left on the board. At one time, he was the consensus No. 3 pick in this draft. This is a very good value pick here; some gave him a second-round grade. The Saints will figure out a way to get him some touches, even though they already have Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush.

What he said.

Congrats, Antonio, and best of luck in the NFL.

Can't argue with that -- I just want to continue watching him play. :)

I believe Deuce is in the last year of contract and is expected to be his final year in NO.
True, there are lots of people who believe that he is gone after this year.
With all the plays that Bush start outside Pitt could get some carries next year assuming all this comes to fruition.

Saints find Pittman too good to pass up
The Associated Press

METAIRIE ? Even with two of the best running backs in the NFL already on their roster, the New Orleans Saints found Antonio Pittman too good to pass up Sunday in the fourth round of the NFL draft.
New Orleans traded one of its two late fourth-round picks and another pick in the fifth round to Houston for a chance to jump up 16 slots and take the former Ohio State star at No. 107 overall.
The only question now is how much Pittman will play, competing with veteran Aaron Stecker for the third running back spot behind Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush.

The Saints never worked out Pittman. Their only exposure to him was at the NFL combine workouts in Indianapolis.

?I was shocked, but that?s life,? Pittman said.

RBs a good value in fourth-round: Not quite as mysterious as Quinn's fall, but still puzzling, was the unpredictable slide of Antonio Pittman. The former Ohio State star was assessed by many people as the No. 3 tailback in the talent pool, behind only Adrian Peterson and Marshawn Lynch. But he didn't go off the board until the eighth pick of the fourth round, the 10th running back taken, when the New Orleans Saints tossed out a safety net for him. With Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush already on hand, New Orleans really doesn't need another tailback, but Pittman was too good to pass at that point.

In wake of Pittman pick, do the Saints have a running back controversy?
By Bob Heist
Louisiana Gannett News

Payton said the pick was no reflection on either Deuce McAllister or Reggie Bush.

“We’ll figure out (Pittman’s) role down the road,” he said. “Right now, obviously, we have a great deal of confidence in Deuce and what he brings to the table and the same thing with Reggie.

“As for the rest of it, we’ll let the competition play out.”

New Orleans doesn't have any plans for Pittman...he's a second-round talent that was available in the fourth round, so it was just smart to make the move. Now they'll have to sort it out.

Comparisons to Derrick Combs or Michael Wiley are a little unwarranted. Pittman very rarely was tackled for a loss. I would dare suggest he has one of the best percentages in Ohio State history of runs that resulted in no negative yards. He was extremely productive at Ohio State as a sophomore RB, which is saying something as well (though the departure of Clarett aided the opportunity). And a 4.4 at the combine? I have no idea why so many RB's went ahead of him...but circumstances are what they are. I don't think he was foolish for coming out, because I figured he would have gone in the mid-second to early third rounds.
