RB Antonio Pittman (Official Thread)

Anyione else notice the ticker during the ESPN WVA-Louisville game broadcast? Attached to the rankings of #1 BCS OSU, was the comparison of Pittman's rushing total after 10 games last year, 1100+ yards and through 10 games this year, 893 yards.
Reason: Chris Wells - 82 carries, 391 yards, 4 TD's. If approximately half of those carries were in meaningful time and they went to Pittman he would be right around that 1100 yard mark this year also. No offense to MoWells but there were no backs taking away meaningful snaps from Pittman last year like Beanie is this year.

I just did a quick analysis comparing Pittman's numbers through nine games last year to this year to date to see how accurate my statement actually was:

2005: 181 carries for 978 yards for an average of 5.40 ypc
2006: 163 carries for 894 yards for an average of 5.48 ypc

So if Pittman has the same number of carries this year as he did at this point last year he would have 991 yards through 9 games and on pace for 1100 though 10 games.

Conclusion: Pittman's running very similar to last year (as seen with the ypc average) but has lower amount of yards thanks to a lower carry load due to 1) Chris Wells and 2) being taken out sooner in the 4th quarter because of blow-outs.

Which is a good thing. a) It gives Pitt a rest so he can be better, longer. b) It gives Beanie time to grow into the stud we all know he will be.

It probably means Pitt won't be winning the Heisman next year, but as long as he tries then it's OK by me

I have a hunch, and it starts with pittman talking to JT about staying or leaving. Pittman had to have pointed out that next year, Chris Wells is a year older and Troy and possibly Ginn are gone. What other than JT featuring Pittman next year could entice him to come back? Next year, Pittman will blow everyone away after another season of buying into JT, more film study, and more strength training, Pittman will be scary to watch as JT will find ways to get him the ball as well as C Wells with a dangerous 1 2 punch

i can always hope:biggrin: but in all seriousness, what would make Pitt think he'd win a heisman next year outside of JT telling him he'll get the oppurtunity? Pittman very well could end up as one of the best NFL backs to ever come from tOSU

You can justify the actual stats many different ways. (YPC, Wells taking Pittman's carries, etc.) But I think it's just the media trying to find fault with Ohio State, so the national fans can tune into the game and hope for an upset.

If Ohio State's fault this year is that the starting running back is not on pace to beat last year's totals, then that's OK by me.

It seems obvious to me that ESPN misused stats to exagerate the discrepancy from Pitt's totals last year. Conspiracy theory aside, how many college teams have even played 10 games this year, and who inside ESPN monitors the accuracy of these "stir up controversy statistics"?

Pitt is it.

Wrote this in the story on Ohio State fumbles this week, but I think it deserves another mention. Antonio Pittman hasn?t fumbled in 163 carries this year. I?m not sure he will ever really be a Heisman candidate, but the more you examine his game, the better he looks.

Draft Notes: Running Backs Antonio Pittman, Kenny Irons, More

A look at the Saturday performances of running backs who could be playing on Sunday next year.

Antonio Pittman, Ohio State: Pittman couldn't get anything going against Illinois. The Illini absolutely dominated up front and held Pittman to an Edgerrin James against Chicago-like 32 carries for 58 yards. If he leaves Ohio State early Pittman will probably be a second-round pick.

Kenny Irons, Auburn: Because of a balky ankle, Irons played only the first series of the game against Arkansas State. Early this season Irons looked like a Top 5 pick, but the combination of injury and ineffectiveness now makes him look more like a late first-rounder.

Andre Brown, North Carolina State: Georgia Tech shut Brown down, holding him to 19 yards on nine carries, with a long gain of just four yards. A third-year sophomore, Brown still has two years of eligibility left. I don't expect him to come out this year, but if he does he looks like a third-round pick.

Mike Hart, Michigan: Although he had a costly fumble in the end zone for a safety, Hart was one of the few Michigan players who had a good game against Ball State. He finished the game with 25 carries for 154 yards and a touchdown. I still don't think Hart will turn pro, but I do think he's a clear first-day pick if he does.

Pittman's game yesterday was not his fault. It was the game plan.

I know we had a lead and I know that Illinois wasn't going to beat us but holy crap. I think Troy could have audibled a better game than what we ran.

I can't believe Alex Boone makes that much difference. I know he doesn't.

How many Buckeye leaves will Beanie get this week??

Well... now I feel sorry for NW next week, because I'm sure the team doesn't want TWO games like that leading into the scUM game.

Pittman's talking about the Heisman was *** not good ***. I'm sure this will bring him (and the whole team) back down to earth.

Go Bucks!

TWO-QUESTION INTERVIEW

Monday, November 06, 2006

The junior set a career high with 32 carries in Saturday's 17-10 win over Illinois, but he gained just 58 yards, tying his second- lowest rush ing total of the past two seasons.
Q: Was it dis appointing for the offense to have a rushing day like that?
A: I wouldn't say it was disappointing. As a team we want to rush for over 200 yards, but if you've got to grind it out, you've got to grind it out. I was frustrated about it a lot, but you've got to keep going with the game. As a running back, you've got to continue to be patient no matter what's coming at you, and eventually you'll break one. One play, it looked like I could have a seam, but I got tackled by my shoestrings. You just go ahead and get ready for Northwestern.
Q: After Chris Wells fumbled, did you think to yourself, "OK, this is me the rest of the way?"
A: Not at all. A fumble is a fumble, it's not the end of the world. I don't hope anybody fumbles so I can get more carries or anything like that, you know. I'm out here trying to help him as much as he's trying to help me. And that's something we can both learn off of. I talked to him and told him to keep his head up.
