RB Antonio Pittman (Official Thread)

The favorite of whom? Fans who are ready to pre-emptively award Chris Wells 4 consecutive Heisman's? That doesn't matter. The only thing that would matter is if the coach's were favoring Chris Wells or anyone else over Pittman, and I haven't seen any evidence to support that. The fact that Dick Tressel has publicly declared Pittman to be the clear #1 tailback, and that Chris Wells didn't even get the majority of carries with the ones in the spring when Pittman was out, doesn't seem to suggest that CW is the clear favorite in the minds of the coaching staff.

And add the simple fact that Pittman is coming off a 1,000+ yard season. Why would we want to put in a guy with less experience? I think that Pittman will have another break-thru season, helping Troy Smith lead the balanced attack. Give him the ball!

i think you need to look at the make-up of osu in 2007.

there is no more troy. osu will have a very strong defense with a good offensive core, but a rookie starter at qb. In 2002, OSU ran the ball close to 2/3 of the time with a similar team make-up. We all saw the need for at least 2 capable rb's that year. There will be plenty of carries in '07 for pittman and wells.

auburn did just fine with ronnie brown and cadillac as well.

I believe that the week before the spring game when Pitt was hurt, Coach Tress went on record as saying that Mo Wells would start "if there was a game tomorrow."

I wonder if this star freshman TB is going to be handled a little differently than the last star freshman TB. Different kids, I know, but I wonder if Coach will want to bring this one along more slowly.

Wells doesn't possess the predisposition to fall into the same traps that MoC did. Wells, like Oden, are very well grounded and don't have their heads in the clouds. I think if Beanie started the season at #1 on the depth chart, his attitude and mental focus would not falter a bit.

That said, Coach Tressel may break him slowly because unlike 2002, we have a solidified, known commodity at tailback going into the season. Pittman, barring injury, is the starter. Mo Wells will start the season as his primary backup and then start to get his swerve on in the slot and shotGinn formations as the season progresses.

Beanie will get less that 75 touches this year.

we know that by the middle of the season that Pitt and CW will probably be the 1 and 2 tailbacks... and it looks like they want to use haw as a return man... me being a little bias i cant wait to see what they do with MW34... im waiting for him to be able to break out and show how he was able to run for almost 6000 yards in high school... and how he has the single game rushing record of 428 yards... i think his potential is amazing and with him just learning the playbook and getting comfortable... i think this is his make or break year.

CW is going to be a beast... i believe he will be spliting alot of time with Pitt by the end of the season...which will force Pitt to probably leave early...

this sounds like the right climate to start a boeckman or smith at starting qb convo... :bonk:

beanie is a tremendous talent whose potential is off the charts. he's also a guy who doesn't know the playbook let alone have enough reps picking up blocks to even be considered at the starting spot. so long as pittman picks up where he left off last season and continues to improve. even by this time next season the best i think beanie can hope for is to force a 2 back set. theres just no way you can justify turning away the type of production pitt has brought with him.

Pittman's biggest weakness may be Wells' biggest strength. Toting the rock inside the 10 yard line. If nothing else Wells gives the offense a bruiser that can move the pile, bump it outside, stiffarm and hopefully turn a few FG's into TD's.

How many points were left on the table last year, between Smith fumbling inside the 10, Schnittker fumbling inside the 10 (usually at the goalline), or Pittman getting stuffed inside the 5?

This is a pointless debate right now, the reality is that no matter what is productivity is or any other factors next year, the key factor that will determine what his future holds for '07 is where the NFL scouts project his draft position.

Pittman actually did a great job running in the redzone and finding the endzone as the season went on. I expect that trend to continue.

Mo C was hurt for the second half of his season. Pittman has been warn down the last couple of years as well. It takes a pair and a spare of running backs in the Big 10. We all know that Pittman will be part of the starting pair. Wells vs Wells is a much more interesting topic. That being said, look at the loyalty / confidence shown in the senior leadership of Ross over Pittman. Now it's Pittman's turn on top.
