RB Antonio Pittman (Official Thread)

http://www.cfbnews.com/2006/Ask_CFN/Ask_CFN.htm

With a lot of quality backs returning in the Big Ten, including Mike Hart, Tony Hunt, Albert Young, Tony Pittman, and possibly (if eligible) Gary Russell, which would you say is the best RB in the Big Ten? – SR

A: How about none of the above? I’d take Northwestern’s Tyrell Sutton out of all of them, but if I were starting a college team, Iowa’s Albert Young wouldn’t be far behind. Hart might make the top of the list if you could guarantee me he could stay healthy for a full season. Pittman is the unsung back in the mix and will be in for a huge year.

Good to see Pittman getting a little love, however, his first sentence threw me off. I cant tell whether hes calling all the backs underachievers, busts, equal accross the board or just average players?

Do you think Antonio leaves after this year if he has another 1300 yard season or better?

No way. You would think he saw how many juniors who left early for the draft get burned this year, especially Youboty. Granted he's a RB and not a CB, but you'd think he won't be in the top five RBs on the board even if he has a great season, and thus it wouldn't be a smart move to declare early.

Heisman favorites 61-80

49. RB Antonio Pittman, Ohio State – Most years, a Buckeye back like Pittman, who ran for 1,331 yards in 2005 would belong in the Top 20, at worst. However, on a team that already boasts QB Troy Smith and WR Ted Ginn, and is set to unwrap all-everything rookie RB Chris Wells, Pittman will need to be otherworldly to be a serious contender.

If he has a big, but not spectacular, season and Wells comes on really strong, he might be better served to come out early rather than be lapped by Beanie the next year and lose the NFL draft momentum he's built. Wells won't supplant him this season, but next season it's a real possibility.

Pittman is going to be a dominant player this year, for several reasons. One I believe this is by far our best O-line in quite a while, especially in run blocking because of our size.
Two, The defensive Coordinators all saw what Troy and the wide out did in the Fiesta Bowl and won't want to give up the big play against us.
Three, Pittman is stronger, faster and more experienced than last year and has plenty of motivation with C. Wells breathing down his neck.

Pittman is the Buckeye I'm most excited to watch this year, I got a deep feeling that #25 is poised to have a year we will talk about for years to come.

Go Bucks!

pitt doesn't have the name power to come out early this year. and unless he does a complete 180 from last season, ain't nobody taking his starting position away from him regardless of how good they are. best wells can do is force a 2 back set.

And with this being Troy's final year, there is likely to be ample opportunity to run the ball next year...Pitt will stay unless he is a guaranteed top of the draft pick IMO

As far as Heisman hype or if he could be a serious contender, I think the fact he has two other Heisman hopefuls on the team will hurt him and the possiblity that Pittman may get some carries taken away near the goal line by Chris Wells. In order to make a push, he would have to dramatically improve on his touchdown numbers and with the type of offense we ran last year with Troy getting most of the touches inside the 15 yard line, I just don't think he would get the national attention he would need. He was underrated last year and I have a feeling it will be the same this year. I am not complaining though, I will take a underrated back that runs for 1400 yards in a season.

I have this theory on Pittman, and I feel bad for the guy if I end up being correct.

In Pittman's freshman year, he was clearly the best back, in my opinion. However, we all know that Tress favored Ross and Hall, due to being seniors.

Last year, in his sophomore year he was clearly a RB with plenty of potential. Now, with Wells coming in, it seems like they may split carries, and Pittman's on-field action will be reduced.

Therefore, I feel like he may leave early after his junior season because Wells seems to be the clear favorite over Pittman.

In my opinion, Pittman could be the most underappreciated Buckeye ever.

Edit: change "underrated" to "underappreciated," and change the last line.
