TEMPE, Ariz. — T.J. Downing stood to testify there was no sight sweeter than watching Antonio Pittman speed off into the distance on a warm winter evening in the desert.
It was no mirage, either. It was Pittman’s 60-yard touchdown run with 1:48 left that put Ohio State over the top in its 34-20 win over Notre Dame last night in the Fiesta Bowl.
"A lot of us were getting tired there at the end, we were cramping up, we were sore, we were hitting hard, and when we saw him burst through there we knew we’d won the game," said Downing, a right guard. "To see him take off like that, it was a great feeling."
The touchdown put to rest any doubt that Notre Dame would rally. It also boosted Pittman’s rushing total to 136 yards on 21 carries for the game and to 1,331 yards for the season. That total is 10 th best in school history, and the second best by a sophomore behind Archie Griffin’s 1,577 yards in 1973.
"I didn’t even know that, but yeah, that’s a real good sophomore year," Pittman said. "But this year is over. In about a week, we’ll back in the weight room, and running and everything, and getting ready for next year."
That’s the future, though. In the present, he left with that touchdown ball under his arm last night. It was symbolic, he said, of his rise this season.
"I came a long way from last year to this year," Pittman said. "Going through the first seven games without a touchdown, and then putting up seven in the last five, that’s a long way for me. I’m going to go home and give this to my family."
The coaches determined that Notre Dame liked to blitz off the edge, which is why the running game kept attacking it, especially to the left side.
"We were pushing the run all day and they weren’t letting anything big get loose," Pittman said.
Off and on the tactic paid off, but nothing like on first-and-10 from the OSU 40-yard line with just less than two minutes left and the Buckeyes leading 27-20.
With fullback Stan White Jr. leading to the edge and picking up the blitzer, left tackle Doug Datish, left guard Rob Sims and others stretching the front, and then Ted Ginn Jr. getting a block on the safety, the crease was huge.
"Then it was off to the races," Pittman said.

I heard a VERY loud "BULLSHIT" coming from Antonio's apt just now...

NBC Army game announcers just said "Chris Wells will be the starting RB next year..."

I think Antonio was heard saying "It's thru ME kid.. the road goes thru ME"

"Your time will come... but my time is now"
