ESPN - Sources: Raiders finally fire Kiffin, consider promoting assistants - NFL

The inevitable became reality Tuesday when Lane Kiffin was fired by Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis without pay via the telephone, according to team sources.
Tom Cable, the team's offensive line coach, was emerging as the leading candidate to replace Kiffin, a source said. Cable was among three coaches interviewed by Davis on Monday night; the others were offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and special consultant Paul Hackett.
Davis is expected to have a press conference later Tuesday to explain his decision to dismiss Kiffin.

That and Al Davis is a freaking jerkwad. Over the phone without pay? That's a bit overboard.

Not only that, but not even allowed to address the team. Al Davis is truly a nasty piece of of work!! Hope the NFL forces that crusty piece of cheese out! Won't honor the contract and his wife is about to give birth!!!

This all goes to prove my theory, Al Davis made a pact with the devil, he can't die until the Raiders win another Superbowl and he's just not ready to go quite yet. Kiffin made some dumb mistakes, but I thought that team was a night and day difference from last year.

Boy, old man river sure makes us Raider fans proud. Dumbass. Seriously though, who the fuck with any brains would take that job?

Nobody will now. They just fired the guy who fielded a very competitive team and had them going in the right direction. The record isn't good, but the Raiders were actually looking like they had a lot of potential.

Al Davis is currently the worst owner in sports.

Al Davis did a bad job with this, and the fans and media will rip him for it, and rightly so. Since week one Kiffin has been on the "Hot Seat" and has been in the media every Monday as everyone is pining over whether he'll coach the next week or not. Letting him go with no pay is pretty harsh as well. Al Davis could have been much more respectable in this whole situation, but he wasn't. Now the Raiders will really tank and he'll catch more shit. And rightly so.

Absolutely, they were competitive...and in every game. He has basically retooled the whole team, and getting the best out of his boys, imo, including our own JayRich! Cable is supposedly the leading candidate. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

Would that be Tom Cable? The guy who's record at freaking Idaho was 11-34?
