Question on LCD Monitors

Wrong glass, Sir.
I finally upgraded to an lcd monitor, and I'm not that impressed. The colors seem to be very faded and washed out. It's from a good manufacturer (Samsung) and has a good contrast ration (2000:1). I've manually upped the contrast and lowered the brightness but it doesn't seem to do anything.

Is this just the nature of the beast? Do I need to tweak something on the settings? Or, do I have a lemon?
 
What did you use before?

LCD screens are sometimes a little more dull, much like the shiny laptop screens are more vibrant than the matte finish screens.

But everyone I know that upgrades to an LCD loves it. Sounds like yours might be a lemon.

I upgraded from a 5 year old 17" flat screen standard tube monitor.

My laptop is a Sony with the XBRITE screen, which is great. I was expecting something similar on this. I still have 25 days to return it no questions asked, so maybe I'll stick my head back into Best Buy and look at the display monitors again.

I have a Samsung Syncmaster 941BW 19" widescreen so it is most likely similar and have a few suggestions:

1) Have you messed with the settings at all? I'm assuming you did but mine has a few different viewing options.... Gaming makes the screen brighter and more vibrant, Internet darkens the screen a bit for easier reading, text darkens a bit more so the white background isn't as piercing... etc.

2) Are you using the standard VGA or DVI output? I just got done building a computer with a DVI output and the display is noticeably better than VGA.

3) What is the resolution of your screen? The optimum resolution for mine is 1440x900 and that is where I get the best quality picture. If I didn't have the optimum resolution set my display was a bit duller. Side note: On my old system I had to download Samsung's monitor drivers to get the resolution to work correctly... if you haven't done that I suggest trying that.

Thanks, everyone. I reinstalled the driver and reset the settings. Now, it's working quite nicely. All in all, still not the equal of the widescreen XBRITE lcd on my Sony laptop but the 19" to 13.3' difference makes up for it. Plus, the degree to which it frees up desk space is amazing...much more than I had anticipated.

My plasma is equipped for a computer input, and I'd like to check that out. I'm just worried about burn-in from the largely static images on a computer screen.
