Have any of you ever messed with Salt Peter (No Tibs, it's Salt Peter, not Salty Peters... )

Specifically KNO3.

I am contemplating using this to burn out a number of small to medium stumps this coming spring/summer. Just curious as to what to watch out for and results to expect.

Used it to burn out numerous stumps.

Make several holes approx 1/2 - 1-inch dia., 3 to 6 inch deep. (Deeper the better).

After drilling the holes and stuffing with the salt I would soak in with sugar water.

Let it the trick of promoting rotting for a couple of weeks. There are plenty of hints on the Inter-Tubes on promoting that process.

Came back and added kerosene to each hole. Burned out the stump in short order.

Thanks Sandgk!! I appreciate the advice. Bummer of the matter is that there are several hundred stumps ranging from 2.5 - 3 inches across to 6 - 10 inches across (the smaller being the much, much more common). I am just really dreading this, should make for a hell of a smoke show though!

Oh, boy. Slight change of plans advised.

Map out where all the tiddlers are located.

Get an adze, a spade and a maul. Willing hands are always useful. A tractor with chain.

Cut the roots going laterally.

Dig out around the stump.

Chain - tractor, pull, stump removed.

(Think about drilling hundreds of holes and the half a hundredweight of potassium nitrate needed, trust me, physical removal of the tiddlers is the best solution).

Concentrate the stump remover on the medium to large stumps. They are likely the lesser in number - and their root base possibly too well set for anything smaller than a medium to full-size tractor and chain.

You can probably get away with that, just don't put a couple of hundred pounds of it in a moving van with any diesel fuel. :)

When we re-landscaped our back yard we had about 2 dozen 'sucker' trees, ranging from 2-4 inches in diameter to contend with. I had rented a Bobcat for placment of flagstones for our patio, but before I started the excavation/placement of road base, I used the fork attachment on the Bobcat to pry out most of the stumps. A little hand digging and chain placement worked well also. For the ones I missed while I had the Bobcat, I used a chain and HiLift jack to uproot them. It actually worked pretty well.

Just watch out for underground utilities!
