Just read the Blue Ribbon Review for tOSU at ESPN.com. Its pretty glowing. They really seem to think we have a legit shot at the National Championship maybe even the favorites. They love JT, surprise. Anyway it seems from reading that they intend to hold Beanie Wells back some.
Wow! Surprising to read that scouts are coming in and looking at Zwick (6'4", 225) over Smith (6'1", 215). Obviously, Zwick's size makes him the more attractive for NFL-types, and completing 72% as a backup doesn't hurt, but it's still quite comical to read it in black and white.

Ah well, good for Justin. His career could have gone 100 different ways, and I'm sure that this result isn't what he was expecting, but he's doing his job anyway, playing the hand he was dealt and not complaining about it when a lot of other QBs would rather rock the boat. Good for him.

If NFL scouts are thinking Zwick has more NFL potential than Smith, then they need to report for drug testing right now. I think the real issue isn't true potential, but rather the last three words in Dryden's quote...

please leave race out of this... troy is a small QB and the NFL scouts always hate on the shrimps. There are some who prove them wrong, but they would doubt Troy just as much if he was white.

Well, excuse me for making an observation, Mister PC. Whether you want to accept it or not, many in the NFL still tend to pigeon-hole black QBs. Don't make it seem like I'm the one questioning Smith's ability when it's the scouts that are.

Go take some snapshots or something... :roll1:

Agreed. Vince did get picked over Leinart despite all the predraft rumblings about Vince dropping out of the top ten. Who is arbuably the best recent QB in NFL that is under 6'2"? He is african-american as well, and was drafted number 1.

like vince?

edit: 06 beat me to it.

The NFL doesn't like short QBs... regardless of skin color. Sorry if I don't naturally assume it's more than that without proof.

I remember checking in the past, and there are very few short QBs drafted early.
Scouts placing Zwick ahead of Smith blows the shit out of that theory...
not really... Vince was 6'5", Troy is probably close to 6'.

Still waiting to hear about these short white QBs who are not overlooked due to their skin color.

I wasn't really trying to prove a theory. More pointing out that skin color does not come into play as much as it used to. The same year of Vick, Drew Brees who was about the same height, was picked in the second round. If Zwick is rated ahead of Smith in the draft because of skin color, then shouldn't Brees have been selected ahead of Vick?
Or maybe because Zwick is taller, he gets the edge? Don't know, but I don't think its race anymore. It definitely used to be, but I think that several African-American QBs have disproved that "theory."

Then again, when you are talking solely about scouts, they may be "old school" and still hold onto the faulty logic that an African-American cannot handle an NFL playbook, but ultimately, when the draft decisions are being made these days, the color of a QB's skin is no longer used in evaluating the pick.

I think NFL scouts are simply looking at the measurables that made Zwick such a prized recruit coming in. That's the way it almost always goes. Thats why Ryan Leaf's get picked #2 overall and Tom Brady's fall to round six.

I think too much is being read into that comment anyway. I think they are just trying to figure out whether Zwick is a draft pick at all. I think there's little doubt that Troy will be a draft pick. Its not like it says they're looking at Zwick over Smith there.

plus zwick showed tremendous improvement from 04 to 05. He is not as talented of a QB as Smith, but that maturation is worth deeper investigation to a scout unfamiliar with OSU... especially b/c he can probably be snagged late in the draft.
