QB1 Will Howard (Official Thread)

...and not scoring early and often enough to get his backup QBs meaningful playing time this year.
In addition to the defense not being able to get off the field in time to actually have enough offensive plays to give backups reps this year.

Howard had a bad game and it may largely be attributable to that hit he took. The problem is if he is not 100%, he shouldn't have been in. I've seen plenty enough from Brown to know he shouldn't be the first one off the bench...horrible accuracy and he's not a mobile QB like we've been pitched to believe. Sayin is the real answer if we need someone to come in. I was talking to my dad about how Saban benched Hurts and put in Tua in the Natty, and won in great part because of that hard decision. We might find ourselves there one way or the other.

I really like Will and hope he heals up to come back with a big playoff run. Kid is the definition of leadership and class, and even with arm strength limitations he can do the job if he is fully healthy. Not calling for his job by any means, but I will acknowledge the flaws in his game that only get worse if he is hurt. So hopefully he is back at full health and we don't have to talk about the Sayin/Brown debate at all.

Sure.

Disproportionate off target throws beyond 12 yards mixed in with a high volume of high percentage throws under said threshold helps to inflate completion percentages and give a false impression of accuracy.

This is another one of those stats require context.

50/50 balls are more on the receiver then on the QB. Which is why we praise physical, jump ball receivers who can climb the ladder and create their own space. Sure, QB has to throw it up, but the odds a 6'4 210lb WR come down with it are significantly higher than a 5'10, 190lb WR.
Agreed but we don’t throw a lot of 50/50 balls. Hardly any IMO actually and certainly not enough.

He’s got a high completion percentage because you’re right the calls are all things within 15 yards. I think Will can connect deep but we just aren’t calling those plays which is too bad because maybe Will can do it?

The vertical shots were few and far between for three reasons, two from Will.

-Lack of ball velocity and ability to physically stretch the defense down field. Ball would be late, underthrown, float too much, etc etc.

- Lack of good vertical ball placement. Several throws I remember this year were short and inside, allowing corners to make plays on them when they needed to be higher and wider. Especially to Jeremiah. I recall two INTs specifically because of poor down field ball placement.

- Pass protection. On straight drops the line struggled at times. Will wasn't always comfortable climbing vertically and working in tight spaces, like so many of these young QBs anymore. As a result, down field routes either don't have the time to develop or the QB can't find them.

I came in to say pretty much the same thing. Again, not calling for his job. But we best damn get Sayin ready to play as a contingency, whether by injury or necessity. If we don't, add a coaching negligence claim to the resume. I appreciate Brown sticking around and his effort, but if we look around the skilled positions and his past performance...choice should be clear if you want to win. And that's all we should care about.

We don’t even know that Sayin can throw the all deep either though.

I get that Will isn’t great throwing deep but when you’re targeting JJ and Tate I think you take those chances. The INT vs Marshall that was deep JJ stated it was on him before he was lined up too wide.

You can’t get better at something if you don’t do it. With the WRs we have I think it’s worth a shot once a quarter. We maybe don’t have the OL to hold up for that one play but we surely don’t have the OL to line up and go 10+ plays every drive.

What’s more likely? That the OL can hold up for one max protect deep ball per quarter or go 10+ plays 75 yards once per quarter?

We are making different arguments overall though. I acknowledge Will isn’t the greatest at it but I think we need to because our OL isn’t good enough to consistently drive the field every possession.

This offense needs explosive plays if we are going to have a chance.

Man that’s what I’m saying… he had multiple runs over 60 yards with K State and he’s not had much at all here other than inside the 5 yard line. He’s lighter too than he was so you’d think he’d be a touch faster.
stiffer too from outdated training methods ....

One of the biggest reasons I was so stoked we got him here. They are trying to change QBs to fit what they want out of them all the way back to Justin. DISLIKE!
