Pryor, Porter formally diagnosed with concussions

Quarterback Terrelle Pryor and cornerback Tracy Porter both sustained concussions in the Raiders' Monday night loss in Denver, the team announced after the game.

Pryor threw for a career-best 281 yards to go along with a touchdown pass but went to the locker room in the game’s closing minutes, clearly shaken up after a big hit delivered by Broncos middle linebacker Wesley Woodyard. His injury was not immediately disclosed at the time.
On 2nd and goal from the Denver 6, Pryor lost two yards on a designed run, and took a thunderous shot. He stayed in the game and delivered a 7-yard pass to Rod Streater on 3rd down, and his 4th down pass to Denarius Moore was broken up for a turnover on downs.
After coming to the sideline, Pryor was taken to the locker room and backup Matt Flynn finished the game.

DENVER -- In a quarterback battle between Peyton Manning and Terrelle Pryor, there is no suspense. We all know who is going to win. It's just a matter of how much damage is done by night's end.

Monday, the damage on the scoreboard was about what you'd expect. Manning and his Denver Broncos blew out to a 30-7 lead and went on to finish off the Raiders 37-21.

In terms of the quarterback matchup, Pryor also took the expected back seat to Manning. But in a slight surprise, the back seat was not as far to the rear as, say, the back seat of a jumbo jet. It was more like the back seat of an airport shuttle bus.

Which at this stage of Pryor's young career, is saying something. He was making just his

fourth NFL start Monday. He isn't close to being in the neighborhood of the NFL's top tier quarterbacks. Yet week by week, snap by snap, the kid is showing that he's not completely in the next area code. His upside still has upside. He was easily the most optimistic Raider element in Monday's game.
"The big stage doesn't bother him," said Denarius Moore, who caught a 73-yard touchdown pass from Pryor that briefly pulled the Raiders to within 10 points of the Broncos in the first half. "It's like he has been a starting quarterback for five years now."

Alas, Pryor now might not even be the starting quarterback next week because his night ended with a wince-inducing concussion. It happened in the fourth quarter when he was carrying the ball on a called quarterback run inside the Broncos' 8-yard line.

His fundamentals are far beyond what I ever thought he'd be... don't know why he couldn't make that progress here... his footwork, his downfield vision and progressions and even his throwing motion... someone deserves a ton of credit for his transformation

Seriously?
With seven years of collegiate coaching experience, Nick Siciliano enters his second season at Ohio State as the offensive quality control coach. He joined the Buckeye staff prior to the 2005 season after spending two seasons at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, N.C.

Siciliano coached A&T's wide receivers in 2003 and quarterbacks in 2004, while serving as the special teams coordinator both years. In 2003 the Aggies won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title and qualified for the NCAA Division I-AA national playoffs. Siciliano, whose recruiting region included Ohio, saw his punt block unit collect seven blocked punts in 2003.

Siciliano is a 1999 graduate of Youngstown State University, where he majored in computer information systems and was a student football coach under Jim Tressel and coached on the 1997
NCAA I-AA national championship team. He then spent two seasons as the assistant video coordinator under Bob Stoops at the University of Oklahoma, helping the Sooners to the 2001 Orange Bowl and their 2000 season national championship.

Siciliano returned to Youngstown State for the 2001 season as the tight ends coach under Jon Heacock. He moved onto Urbana University in Urbana, Ohio, for the 2002 season as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach before beginning his two-year stint at N.C. A &T. He lives in Columbus with his wife, Analisa.

Not knocking any mentoring or coaching.. just making an observation.. that for whatever reason, Pryor did not seem to progress as a fundamental QB.. I always felt it was because of Pryor, per se.. and still think that... He had HS & CFL success so he saw no reason to change... which is why I was one of those that were convinced he'd only see the field in the NFL as a TE

Last night, I actually saw him move up in the pocket.. AND then make a throw from a balanced stance... off the correct foot

Ok, what about john defillippo's credentials? Because like siciliano, he's a Youngstown paisan with limited football experience.

On the flip side, Pryor has also worked with guys like Steve Clarkson, George Whitfield and the late Tom Martinez.

I think it comes down to the fact that TP had 10+ plus years of no tutoring in podunk Jeannette, PA under 'tutors' like Ray Reitz. 10 years of football, excelling with even with bad habits. Because he wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth like a Matt Barkley (who can't get active with the Eagles) or Garrett Gilbert (who couldn't hack it at a terrible Texas program), guys whose daddys could drop 10k a year with private coaches from the age of 12.

Pryor is is now on his sixth season away from Jeannette, so it's no surprise that only now he's developing good habits after siciliano, Martinez, Clarkson and defillippo all did their part to break him of old, bad habits.

I refuse to castigate Nick for being unable to change Pryor's ten years of muscle memory in years 1-3 of what's likely a ten-year process. That's not being fair to him, especially when there WERE marked improvements during Terrelle's tenure with the Buckeyes.

Good post.

Pryor did not have many options at WR during his tenure, either. Certainly nothing close to what Troy Smith was working with, for example.

Agree with you on the receiver thing. Obviously, Nick is not Daniels or Herman but he got Pryor nudged in the right direction a little bit.

At some point, there's going to be another OSU GA or QC coach who gets promoted to a full time position in Columbus. It will be interesting to see how much slack they receive.
