I guess I don't understand. Why did Pryor get 1 more game than Smith did? Unless you're saying the NC game doesn't really count, since Smith did so badly.

I think the big difference was that teams respected Troy Smith so much, the running backs had much more opportunities. I believe that Pittman was a 1,000-yard rusher. With the running backs gaining more yards, there was less that Smith needed to do. Teams this year were able to minimize the output from the Ohio State running backs, and Pryor was a bigger percentage of Ohio State's total offense.

The Rose Bowl game plan contributed greatly to Pryor's totals and caught the Ducks (and even most Ohio State fans) by complete surprise. Personally, I didn't think that Tressel would take the shackles off Pryor. I even thought that Saine would end up as player of the game. It was a bold decision that paid off big time.

I like what Pryor can do in the future because I like the ability of this coach to cut his cloth to the resources at hand. I think that those who think Tressel cannot develop a quarterback will be eating their words in the future.

Pryor hugging Tressel so much after the game reminded me a lot of Troy Smith. Come to think of it, I thought I could never like a coach as much as Woody. It's getting pretty hard to distinguish these coaches on that dimension any more in my mind. I just really like Tressel as a coach, mentor, and educator.

it was definitely the culmination of a year worth of struggle to find his place in the offense, at times he probably thought he was being underutilized and was ready for more responsibility, I think what we witnessed at the end of the game was the 'you were right coach, you were right!' moment

the trust that developed between coach and qb last year (particularly in the Rose Bowl) is reason #672 why next year should be a good one

You don't understand because I'm an idiot, they did play the same number of games. For some reason I was thinking we added a game to the schedule since then. We actually went up from 11 to 12 regular season games from 05 to 06. (We played 12 games with the bowl in 04 and 05, 13 games since, although we played 14 in 02 as everyone knows and 13 in 03)

ugh. yes, leave out the two turf toes, ankle, and knee problems. he's been injured since at least the new mexico state game. but the media would have us believe we were running the wildcat with the outright big 10 title on the line because the coaching staffs faith in pryor had been shaken.

Looking back, it makes a lot of sense. Pryor had a hurt PCL, so he plays like Troy Smith in the 06 NC game the last few weeks of the season. Everyone shouts that the coaches are unsure of Pryor, when instead its that they are unsure of the PCL issue. Everyone in the public (and other coaching staffs like Oregon, it seems) have no idea about this. They think its Pryor being the next Ryan Leaf. Instead, its just a medical issue, and Pryor is really developing behind the scenes, and Ohio State is just playing it safe, ensuring that Pryor doesn't do anything to aggrivate the injury, causing an even larger issue for the Rose Bowl.

Crazy? Or crazy like a fox?

I think he was "playing dead." The entire year, Pryor never once limped this entire season like he did after that first run in the Rose Bowl. Pryor didn't limp the rest of the game.

Maybe it was smoke and mirrors and thats why he choose to speak about it when he did.

Pryor didn't outright limp...but he definitely would kinda hobble/skip as he slowed down after running out of bounds. I first noticed this in the PSU game. Most guys will just slow down and jump stop after like 2 or 3 steps. He would just skip and coast until he slowed down enough to walk back to the huddle.

the whole team had health issues throughout the year. our first 5 games we had different olinemen starting. herron got hurt early in the season. saine had a concussion mid season. not to mention the whole n1h1 bit. pryor at one point had 2 turf toes and an ankle problem in addition to the knee. i suspect they were all picked up during the new mexico state game but thats conjecture on my part.

if you go back and watch the penn state game, pryor never actually drives off his feet when he ran in that game. he looked like he was running on his heels. i said it in the iowa game thread and ill say it again. iowa was a get healthy game for the big 10 title. tressel always does that. whoever we play before scum, we play a safe game and rest players who are hurt if possible. the game, imo, was more of a beat down than last year. once jt realized he didn't actually have to "do" anything to win the game... thats what he did.

i would imagine your correct about oregon overlooking the health issues. just about everyone else has.

Going back and reading through this thread was incredible...

...to see where He, we the fans, and the rest of college football is today...man, good stuff!

I got to see quite a bit of film of Pryor...and the resemblance to Vince Young is uncanny. He is that good...and needs that much work to become more of a QB and less of an ATHLETE...same as Vince did when he was coming into college in '02.

THEN :osu: is the answer. Troy Smith improvement from his freshman year to his heisman/senior year has to be the only proof he would need. He can follow greatness with his.

Vince Young red-shirted, even though I'm sure he could have helped Texas somewhere else with his athletic ability.

Bottom line, if he wants to play quarterback, he'll need to red-shirt unless he can somehow beat 3 upperclassmen, at least one of whom having starting experience.

That being said, once he gets the Troy Smith treatment from the staff and learns what he's doing, look out...

If Boeckman wins the starting job, then Pryor will only have to wait one year for a shot at starting. While it would be tough, he'd still have a legitimate shot.
