From uber-recruit to freshman starter, OSU's Terrelle Pryor living up to hype

BY SHAWN WINDSOR ? FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER ? November 21, 2008

Five weeks ago, Terrelle Pryor asked his head coach to bench him. It was a Friday morning, the day before Ohio State was to play Michigan State in East Lansing.
Pryor was frustrated by the way he had been playing. So he walked in to Jim Tressel's office.
"I was like: Bench me."
The next day, Pryor led the Buckeyes to a 45-7 drubbing of the Spartans. It was MSU's worst loss of the season. It also was one of the freshman quarterback's most impressive performances. That it came some 24 hours after he'd told Tressel he was hurting the team said something to the coach.
"Terrelle's a competitive guy," Tressel said after the MSU game. "When he looks at the film and doesn't like it, he questions himself."
His crisis in confidence slipped under the radar in East Lansing that weekend. But the maturation of arguably the most sought-after high school football player in modern history has been a season-long story in Columbus.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in 2004 weren't the commentators giving Henne a verbal BJ to the tune of "Henne has a good chance to be the first true freshman QB ever to win an Ohio State-Michigan game"?

...wouldn't that make Terrelle the first?

Congrats to TP on his first of many victories in The Game!

Awesome job on that early pick tackling the defender...what a big tackle that turned out to be.

I'm sure there are a few throws he would like to have back, but overall solid job.

It's been fun watching him grow with every game. Can't wait to see his improvement with the bowl layoff.

Go Bucks!

Once Pryor develops as a passer enough where other teams can't load the box against him he will be damn near unstoppable.

Yesterday it was obvious the whole game that tsun was loading the box and manning up on the edge daring us to pass the ball. While Pryor did hit a few long passes, he also overthrew a few balls and held on to the ball entirely too long on several occasions leading to sacks.

Once Pryor develops enough to consistently burn man coverage and blitzes with the passing game a pity the defensive coordinator who has to game plan against him.

I am now officially incredibly excited for his last game of the year.

Whoever we play, I think Pryor might play like he's never played before. I think we can all agree that he has improved tremendously throughout the season. With a long layover, I think he might improve more than imaginable.
I would simply love to see our opponent key in on Beanie 24/7 like PSU did against us with so much success- forcing the young, true freshman, running QB to beat them with his arm... And then to have Pryor do that, for 5 passing TD's  . And I really think something like that is possible. Maybe not 5 TD's... But a lot of aerial attacks that force defenses to shy away from loading the box.

For a freshman that did NOT participate in spring ball, TP progress in the passing game has been very good. He will now get the benefit of working with his WR's in 7 on 7 winter drills, spring ball and 7 on 7 summer drills.

By this time next year, Doug Flutie will be eating his words.
