ASK THE EXPERT: Michigan target Terrelle Pryor not an exceptional passer but phenomenal athlete

January 13, 2008
The Free Press recently spoke with Josh Helmholdt, a writer for The Wolverine (Michigan's site on rivals.com). We discussed blue-chip recruit Terrelle Pryor and whether the dual-threat quarterback is getting too much hype.
What are your thoughts on Terrelle Pryor as a player? I did get to witness it last week down in San Antonio for the Army (All-American game) and the Army Bowl practices, and he's going to be much different than what Michigan fans are used to. There is no doubt he is a phenomenal, phenomenal athlete. But that is first and foremost what he is. He is not an exceptional passer. He's good enough to succeed in college in that passing game, but the days of Chad Henne and Ryan Mallett and Elvis Grbac and Drew Henson, those days are gone. You're not going to see just a phenomenal arm out of a kid like Terrelle Pryor. What he does do with the ball in his hands, though, is almost unmatched. I think by the end of his college career, the only person that people are going to be able to compare him to is Michael Vick.

All (Buck)eyes?and others?on next big thing

"It's funny the way the whole country has been captivated by this kid," Crabtree said. "They all want to know: 'What's happening with Terrelle Pryor?' "

If you haven't heard of Pryor, that's OK. There had to be a first time you read the name Reggie Bush or Vince Young or Jimmy Clausen.

Everyone who follows college football recruiting has heard of him. He's the nation's top recruit, a 6-foot-6-inch, 225-pound quarterback from the western Pennsylvania town of Jeannette who runs a 4.4-second 40-yard dash and can fire a football 65 yards.

He's the first Pennsylvania player to both pass and rush for 4,000 yards, and he was named MVP of the Jan. 5 U.S. Army All-American Bowl after he made other high school All-Stars look like JV backups.

But people who have spoken with Pryor believe Ohio State and Michigan are 1-2.

Crabtree called the Ohio-Michigan border the "epicenter of the epicenter" and added of Pryor's decision: "It's hard to put into words how big this is."

Pryor, oddly enough, has taken only one official visit, to Ohio State. During an unofficial visit to Columbus in June, Pryor met Buckeyes football greats Smith and Orlando Pace, plus former Ohio State QB and current ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit.

Michigan was barely in the picture until Rodriguez?"Rich Rod," Pryor calls him?took the Wolverines job. Rodriguez phoned Pryor with the news before letting almost anyone else know.

Now hard-core Michigan fans are in freak-out mode over Pryor.

Detroit Free Press columnist Drew Sharp wrote that Rodriguez "must keep Pryor away from Jim Tressel. He must do whatever it takes. Failure is not an option."

"It will be entertaining," Crabtree said, "to see how this unfolds."

Among those in the crowd were Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Terrelle Pryor, the 6-foot-6 quarterback from nearby Jeannette (Pa.) High who is considered the top unsigned major college football recruit. Fans chanted "We Want Pryor," and one fan held up a sign "Marino, Ditka, Dorsett ... Pryor."

Jeannette quarterback Terrelle Pryor, the nation's No. 1 recruit, continues to play switcheroo with his list of schools. Pryor is now interested in LSU, along with his original top five of Florida, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon and Penn State. Jeannette football coach Ray Reitz confirmed that Pryor will take an official visit to Michigan this weekend and Oregon on Feb. 2-3.

TERRELLE PRYOR: Super recruit to visit U-M; LSU and Les Miles might be next
January 16, 2008
FREE PRESS NEWS SERVICES

Louisiana State wouldn't let Michigan get Les Miles and now might not let the Wolverines get top recruit Terrelle Pryor.

That's because Pryor -- the nation's No. 1-rated quarterback from Jeannette, Pa. -- has added LSU to his list of schools that includes U-M and Ohio State.

The good news is Pryor plans to make his official visit to Ann Arbor on Friday. He's still undecided whether he will take more visits. Former Lions and Eastern Michigan QB Charlie Batch is helping Pryor figure it out.

"I've had to get a second cell phone because things have been so crazy," Pryor told SI.com. "It's really getting busy now."

Pryor has visited Ohio State and is considering Florida, Oregon and now LSU for an official visit Jan. 25 -- and that could be his last visit.

"LSU is new," he said. "Charlie spoke to them, and then I spoke to coach Gary Crowton (LSU's offensive coordinator), and I liked a lot of what he was saying. I wouldn't say they're as high up as the others because I am just learning about them, but I like what they're talking about in changing the offense for me.

"Oregon has had me interested for a little while now. Florida is in there as well, and they obviously run a quarterback-friendly offense."

Pryor told rivals.com: "I don't have a leader. We were all having fun at the U.S. Army All American Bowl with the Buckeyes on the helmets and I'm close to a lot of those guys, but I won't know where I'm going until I at least visit Michigan and maybe another place."

He expects to decide Feb. 6, which is national signing day.

Pryor may set official visit to Pitt

By Chris Dokish, PSR Contributing Editor

While Pitt has not been officially on the final list of Jeannette superstar quarterback TERRELLE PRYOR for many months, that does not mean they have given up. According to a source close to the situation, Pryor may take an official visit to the Pitt campus on Friday, January 25, during which time he would spend time with both the football and basketball programs. Pryor himself, however, is less committed to that idea.

Pryor denies reports of Pitt recruiting visit

Wednesday, January 16, 2008
By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Jeannette High School star quarterback Terrelle Pryor has changed his recruiting plans a little, and he denies a report that he is now considering Pitt.

Pryor was going to make a visit to Penn State this weekend, but will visit Michigan instead.

"I've been up to Penn State so many times, there is nothing new for me to see there," Pryor said.

Pryor also said LSU is now among his finalists and he will most likely visit the school in the next few weeks. He also said he will visit Oregon.

Tressel eyes a QB prize
Pryor could top stellar recruiting class
Thursday, January 17, 2008
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS An 18-year-old kid who has never taken a college football snap could extend Jim Tressel?s winning streak over Michigan. Or Terrelle Pryor could stop the Buckeye bleeding for the Wolverines.

Pryor, the nation?s most highly recruited high school quarterback, has Ohio State and Michigan at the top of his list. The school that lands Pryor will be viewed differently.

For Ohio State, it would do wonders toward putting a second straight national title loss behind them. Yes, he is that good, according to scouts.

New Michigan Head Coach Rich Rodriguez could hit pay dirt without even coaching a game should he land Pryor.

?Honestly, he?s a bigger get for Michigan because of sheer need,? Scout.com National Editor Jamie Newberg said. ?Rich Rodriguez?s system ultimately revolves around a quarterback like Terrelle Pryor. And they don?t have anything there.

?We?ve seen Ohio State succeed with Todd Boeckman and Troy Smith. I really believe it is more important for Michigan than it is for Ohio State. I don?t want to undervalue how important it is for Ohio State, because we?re talking about the best player in the country.?

Terrelle: Here?s why you should pick Ohio State
Sports spotlight
Thursday, January 17, 2008
By Todd Porter

What if the college football world was your oyster? What if you were 18 years old and had every college football coach in the country salivating at your feet? Every recruiting service wanting to know your every move? Grown men following your daily moves on the Internet?

So you are Terrelle Pryor, the 6-foot-6, 225-pound quarterback from Jeannette (Pa.) High School. The guy they?re all calling a can?t-miss college quarterback. The guy who is a difference maker before ever playing a game or setting foot on campus. You?re the guy who can change a college football program?s image just by signing there Feb. 6.

Ohio State Head Coach Jim Tressel reportedly was in Pennsylvania on Wednesday. He was visiting Pryor, trying to get the deal closed ? or at least convince Pryor that Columbus is the best place to be.

Pryor rules out Pitt - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Jeannette All-America quarterback Terrelle Pryor on Wednesday night dismissed news reports that he would visit Pitt this weekend.

"Pitt's out, period. I won't go there, for sure," Pryor said. "I get false stuff said about me all the time. I'm used to it."

The Terrelle Pryor Sweepstakes isn't worth the hassle

By: Doug Bonham | Sports Reporter
Issue date: 1/18/08 Section: Sports

Oregon doesn't need Terrelle Pryor.

There, I said it.

Think about it this way: You're trying to date and pin down somebody really special. He or she is smart, beautiful, and everything you want right now. You could go after most everybody out there, but this individual is truly unique and extraordinary.

How would it feel to then have that person not only not commit to you, but actively play the field? It's one thing to be in demand, but it's an entirely different situation when somebody is impossible to pin down.

I wouldn't stand for it, and that's a reason why I'm not sold on Pryor. Sure, he's clearly mulling a massive amount of options, but the way he's played the media - acting as the leak to announce former West Virginia coach's move to Michigan during December - is a little bit off-putting. He's got an impressive high school football and basketball resume, of course, but that only goes so far in his quest to establish credentials. The circus of media around him taking his first fall camp snaps will require three rings wherever he ends up.

No. 1 prospect schedules visit to LSU
Glenn Guilbeau
[email protected]

BATON ROUGE - The state of Pennsylvania isn't ordinarily considered a prime LSU football recruiting area. Well, it is now.

Such are the spoils of a national championship. The Tigers won their second Bowl Championship Series title in five years on Jan. 7 with a 38-24 victory over Ohio State, which is a border state of Pennsylvania. And the nation's consensus No. 1 high school prospect was watching.
