JON MACHOTA'S BLOG: No. 1 recruit Terrelle Pryor could pick between U-M and OSU; why he should Go Blue

With less than a month before high school football players can sign letters of intent with colleges, the most valuable gem of the 2008 recruiting class is still available to a few teams, including the Wolverines.

Terrelle Pryor, the nation's No. 1 ranked quarterback could be the piece that propels Michigan from a good program to an elite, national-title winning one.

Pryor showed incredible athletic ability on Saturday in the Army All-American game, a high-school All-Star game. He ran for 76 yards and a score and threw for 79 and a score.

Pryor still in; Harper, too?

by John Hunt Monday January 07, 2008, 9:23 AM

According to Sports Illustrated, quarterback phenom Terrelle Pryor has changed his mind and will not visit Oregon. But according to Pryor himself, (as I have been reminded many times in the past couple of hours), Oregon is still on his list.

Word is Chris Harper, who decommitted from Kansas State after a coaching change, is leaning heavily toward Oregon and might enroll in school this spring.

Pryor has repeated his intention of announcing his decision on Feb. 6. Should be an interesting spring...

Pryor, Jeannette vanquish Greensburg Central, 80-54
Outside shooters do the damage in AA showdown
Wednesday, January 09, 2008
By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Terrelle Pryor's liftoff started just inside the free-throw line. His thundering one-handed dunk looked like LeBron, or Kobe, or something from an NBA highlight film, as it knocked an opponent to the ground and brought Jeannette's sellout crowd to its feet.
But while that electrifying moment was a sharp jab at Greensburg Central Catholic's ego, it wasn't typical of the way this game played out. This was a night when Jeannette did its damage from much farther away from the basket.

Pryor top act at Basketball Classic
Wednesday, January 09, 2008
By Mike White, The Associated Press
One of the top high school basketball players in the country and Jeannette star Terrelle Pryor will be two of the headline acts for the second Pittsburgh High School Basketball Classic.
The three-game event is Jan. 27 at the Palumbo Center and is run by John Gimmarco of the Pittsburgh Basketball Club. At 3 p.m., Chartiers Valley will play Upper St. Clair, followed by contests between Notre Dame Prep (Mass.)-American Christian Academy (Pa.) and Jeannette-Aliquippa.
All three games will be televised by PCN.
American Christian Academy, near Philadelphia, features Tyreke Evans, a 6-foot-6 guard who is the No. 4 player in the nation, according to Scout.com - College and High School Football, Basketball, Recruiting, NFL, and MLB Front Page. Rivals.com ranks him No. 6. He has not made a college decision but has narrowed his choices to Louisville, Memphis, Texas, Connecticut and Villanova.

Pryor, the magnificent football-basketball star, can shoot, too, as he made one 3-pointer. But those dunks are a little easier. Pryor, a 6-6 forward, had five last night. He finished with 16 points, six rebounds and a handful of assists. Not bad for someone who missed a week of basketball while playing in an all-star football game in San Antonio and arrived back in town until Sunday.

Bowers moves to No. 1 in final Class of 2008 ESPN 150

By Tom Luginbill, Craig Haubert and Billy Tucker
Scouts Inc.

With less than a month to go until signing day, the final major adjustments to our ESPN 150 have been solidified. After collectively breaking down each of the premier all-star games and popping in tape of our last unevaluated state playoff contests, we feel we have put together a credible and objective listing of the top 150 college prospects in the country.

Bowers' move to the top spot did precipitate a natural shift in the top 10 of the ESPN 150. Jones fell to No. 2 while Will Hill (West Orange, N.J./Saint Peter's ) slid to No. 3 and saw a position change from athlete to safety, his expected college position. QB Terrelle Pryor (Jeannette, Pa.) dropped to No. 4 overall and is now labeled a quarterback, his projected position with the probable schools remaining on his list. We actually slightly raised the grades of Jones, Hill and Pryor as a result of their senior seasons of great accomplishments, so their slight drop in ranking actually has nothing to do with anything other than Bowers' rise to No. 1.

JAMES JAHNKE: Why nation's No. 1 recruit Terrelle Pryor should pick Ohio State over Michigan

January 10, 2008
JAMES JAHNKE
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

If Terrelle Pryor, perhaps the No. 1 football recruit in the country, wants to start as a freshman, he should go to Michigan. There’s no doubt about that.

He’s a quarterback in the mold of Vince Young, tall and mobile. Given the depleted state of the Wolverines’ depth chart, the Jeannette, Pa., product would be the first-stringer the moment he signed on the dotted line.

But if his ultimate designs are on the NFL – and whose aren’t at that age? – he should go to Ohio State. There, he won’t be thrown to the wolves before he’s ready. There, he’ll have to earn his position. And there, he’ll better learn how to be an NFL signal caller.

Terrelle Pryor Recruiting Diary: Steelers' Batch will join Pryor on recruiting trips
Friday, January 11, 2008

I am probably going to take three recruiting visits this month and I will be taking [Steelers quarterback] Charlie Batch with me to all of them.
I've known Charlie for a couple years. His brother dates my aunt. Charlie is kind of part of my family now. We talk. I asked him if he would want to go on my visits, and he said sure.
He'll just help me because he's been through this recruiting process before. Just from talking to him, I trust him a lot. When I go on these visits, I think he'll know who's telling the truth just by sitting there and listening.
I'm going to visit Michigan the weekend of Feb. 1. I'll probably go to Penn State the weekend of Jan. 18. I think I might try to go to Florida some time, too.
I've already been to Ohio State. I'm looking at Oregon, but I probably won't visit them.
I still don't plan on making a decision until signing day (Feb. 6).

ESPN The Magazine did an article on me last week. I wasn't too happy about it. A lot of things they wrote about my parents aren't true. I don't know where they got some of their information.
I know I'll have some words for the dude that wrote it, if I ever get to talk to him.

I know [quarterback] Ryan Mallett is transferring from Michigan, and I know their top two receivers [Mario Manningham and Adrian Arrington] are going into the NFL draft. But that doesn't really mean anything to me. I'm going to go where I can feel comfortable.
Michigan's coaches have told me that if I come there, I would have a good chance to start. But no matter where I go, there is going to be competition.

FYI, this is a blog...so the info contained can be a combination of fact and opinion. Having said that, if it is true that RR is targeting several other QBs including a JUCO then he must not feel all that confident about Pryor...

http://www.mgoblog.com/

The upshot: Rodriguez is going to take 25 kids this year. He's currently got 22 open spots, 17 commits, two of whom have scheduled visits to other schools, and not enough names on the board to fill out the rest of the scholarships. Even in the best-case realistic scenario where Rodriguez keeps the existing class intact and picks up Pryor, Woods, Cooper, Floyd, Carraway, and Perry he's still two guys short. The middle of the bell curve is more like four or five guys short.

Expect at least a couple sleeper types and possibly a JUCO or two. (I've been told that Rodriguez is talking with the admissions department about a couple of JUCO quarterbacks.) I also expect Rodriguez to pursue already-committed recruits in the Midwest corridor he picked up most of his Mountaineers in: meh dual-threat QB Dominick Britt, a Cinci commit, virtually anyone in the Pittsburgh area he thinks can help out, and IN QB Marqueis Gray, who committed to freakin' Minnesota at the AA game.

Battle for high school QB Pryor includes Ohio State, Michigan
Wolverines jumped into contention when they hired Rodriguez from West Virginia.

COLUMBUS ? Being the hottest football prospect in the nation can be a draining experience, but Terrelle Pryor's high school coach believes his star wouldn't be so worn out if he could break free from his expanding entourage.

The athletic quarterback may be able to juke defenders, but he's having trouble shaking loose from the hordes who want to get close to him.

"We have some hangers-on that he thinks are friends of his, and I don't know if they are," Jeannette (Pa.) High School coach Ray Reitz said. "Just because he's such a great athlete, I don't know if these guys are in it for his best interests or for what they can get down the road from him.

"That's what he has to understand. Terrelle is basically a pretty good kid, but he's a kid. I just wish he had a better chance to be a kid. But that's the price of fame. He has a gift from God."
"He's going to weigh all his options, but I know he likes Ohio State a lot," Reitz said. "I think he respects Coach (Jim) Tressel and what they've done up there. It's a great program ? as is Michigan. He can't go wrong with either program, and I think he realizes that."

Officials of the Big 33 are meeting this weekend to pick the Pennsylvania team for the June all-star football game. But the biggest star in Pennsylvania won't be on the team.
Jeannette quarterback Terrelle Pryor said Thursday he won't play in the game, which matches Pennsylvania's top seniors against Ohio's top seniors. The game is set for June 14 at Hersheypark Stadium.

BUCKEYE QUARTERBACK TRANSFERS: Could it impact No. 1 recruit Terrelle Pryor?

January 14, 2008
FREE PRESS STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES
Ohio State quarterback Robby Schoenhoft will transfer to Delaware, according to ESPN.
Once a competitor with Todd Boeckman for the Buckeyes' starting quarterback job, Schoenhoft moved to tight end for the national championship game.

Schoenhoft's shift from quarterback to tight end signified dual-threat quarterback Antonio Henton's rise up the depth chart. Henton, the team's No. 3 quarterback for most of the year, became the team's backup by year's end.

The move could play a role in Terrelle Pryor's recruitment. Pryor, the nation's No. 1 prospect according to Rivals.com, must choose his school by Feb. 6.

The Jeannette, Pa., native will pick between a handful of schools, most notably Michigan and Ohio State.

With Schoenhoft gone, the Buckeyes look closer to capitalizing on Ohio State coach Jim Tressel's promise to design the offense around a dual-threat quarterback, much like he did for former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.
