COLUMBUS ? There have been countless Braxton Miller highlights in his two years as Ohio State?s starting quarterback, most of them madcap dashes through traffic, breathtaking breakaways in the open field and Copperfield-esque escapes from the clutches of a defender.

This one was different. This one went viral. This highlight was in his hair.

When Miller showed up at the OSU football complex one day this spring and removed his ballcap, he revealed not only a blond strip down the middle of his ?fro-hawk? ? a la former LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu ? but a side of his personality rarely, if ever, seen from the understated Buckeye.

?I sat in on one of the (OSU) quarterback meetings one day and Braxton walked in and I went ?Oh my ??? said Jay Minton, Miller?s high school coach at Wayne High School near Dayton. ?Coach (Tom) Herman (the Buckeyes? offensive coordinator and QB coach) said, ?What are you trying to do, look like your coach???

Minton has blond hair.

?There was a game (in high school) where he wore Ohio State socks. At least they were scarlet and gray,? Minton joked. ?Shoot, we look at him as an icon, but he?s still a (20-year-old) kid at heart. I don?t know why he (changed to a radical hairstyle). That?s not Braxton. He?s not rebellious or anything like that. He?s a great, great kid and his character is second to none.?

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, at first blush, had every right to be worried. Miller is the latest in an assembly line of Heisman Trophy candidates he has mentored at quarterback, from Bowling Green?s Josh Harris, to Utah?s Alex Smith to Florida?s 2007 winner Tim Tebow.

?(The Heisman hype) is real; it?s not something you can ignore,? Meyer said. ?It?s something I?m going to watch very closely. It changes who you are, it changes your family, it changes everything. Braxton doesn?t need to change. He?s really good the way he is.?

Ohio State junior QB Braxton Miller named Big Ten offensive player of year in preseason media poll

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Last year, Braxton Miller was ahead of schedule. In a media poll before the 2012 season, the Ohio State quarterback received just one vote out of 24 for the Big Ten's preseason offensive player of the year.

By the end of the year, he was named the Big Ten's best offensive player, finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting and led Ohio State to an undefeated record.

Miller got a lot more votes this year.

In a preseason poll organized by The Plain Dealer of 26 Big Ten writers spread across the conference, Miller earned 24 of 26 votes as the Big Ten's best offensive player. Two other quarterbacks on conference contenders each earned one vote ? Nebraska's Taylor Martinez and Devin Gardner of Michigan.

Ohio State football: Not fishing for trouble
Miller wants to be in news for what he does on field, not off it
By Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH WEDNESDAY JULY 24, 2013

Braxton Miller has endured bumps and bruises on the field, but to date, the Ohio State quarterback has been able avoid potholes off the field.
Not all of his contemporaries ? or teammates ? can say the same thing. For evidence, there is Johnny Manziel, the Texas A&M quarterback who won the 2012 Heisman Trophy and has since endured several rides in the media churn as he insists on continuing his flamboyant lifestyle.

Closer to home, Miller?s teammates Carlos Hyde and Bradley Roby are dealing with legal issues from last weekend that have landed them in hot water with coach Urban Meyer less than two weeks before the start of OSU?s preseason camp.

Miller is no recluse, but he has managed to steer clear of controversy as he heads into a junior season filled with great expectations, especially considering he set a school record with 3,310 yards of total offense in the Buckeyes? 12-0 season of 2012.

?I stay low-key, I?m just a calm person,? Miller said as he prepared to step into the spotlight today and Thursday at the Big Ten media gatherings in Chicago. ?I like to stay out of trouble. I don?t like my name being in the news for negative things and people looking at me the wrong way.?

That lesson, he said, came from his parents, Kelly and Kevin.
?I want to be a good person. That?s just how I was brought up,? he said. ?When success comes along, you?ve got to be humble about things. You want others to speak about you; you don?t want to have to speak for yourself.?

It?s likely that much will be said about Miller between now and Aug. 31, when Ohio State begins the 2013 season. The Buckeyes are favored to win the Big Ten, now that they are off a one-year postseason ban, and are expected to contend for the Bowl Championship Series title game. And Miller is among the early contenders for this year?s Heisman Trophy.

?That?s when your name is supposed to be talked about, during the season,? Miller said. ?You don?t want to be bothered with the mess in the offseason of getting in trouble and things like that, getting your name in the news and people talking about you the wrong way.?

Toward that end, he has worked on his game since OSU last played on Nov. 24 against Michigan. Miller traveled to California in December for tutoring sessions with quarterback guru George Whitfield Jr., worked with Meyer and offensive coordinator Tom Herman during OSU?s spring practices and participated in seven-on-seven workouts with teammates.

?I would say the biggest improvement is I am more focused, and have gotten much better on my fundamentals,? Miller said. ?When things would break down sometimes last year, I didn?t rely on my fundamentals ? I got jittery. Sometimes the ball would flare on me, or my grip was wrong, different things.?

MILLER IS IMPROVED

Quarterback Braxton Miller, the reigning Big Ten offensive player of the year, is much improved, Meyer said, compared to this time a year ago.

?He?s come a long way,? Meyer said. ?I know it?s just three days (into camp), but he had really good day today.?

By that, Meyer said he meant ?Just his whole demeanor. His relationship with the receivers, which I thought was -- , I don?t want to say non-existent (a year ago), but you just didn?t see that. He didn?t really know what he was doing, and it?s hard to lead.

?Part of being a leader is setting a standard, lead by example, and he wasn?t leading by example because he didn?t know what he was doing. I just see a much better presence by him.?

ZERO CONTROVERSY.

This is why there is so little discussion in this thread, while 2 scUM QB threads churn like butter. What is there to say? Even after the season starts and the thread fills with jaw-dropping highlights, what will there be to add?

On the other hand...

In the interest of offering an alternative to the interminable discussion on scUM and aTm QBs, and to pass the next two dozen days: What has been Braxton's greatest play to date?

I believe it's the crazy TD run at Penn State narrowly over the 2011 game winner to Smith against Wisconsin. While OSU still would have win without that play, there are fewer people who could have executed the play he made in Happy Valley.
